Staff were dismissive of my asthma symptoms so I had to leave early which ruined my evening. I normally love this venue but was very disappointed with my experience last night. I came to see the live show with my partner and was really enjoying it until I noticed something aggravating my asthma symptoms. It turned out that dry ice was being used which is a known asthma trigger and which meant I had to leave the bar to get my symptoms to calm down. Meanwhile my partner asked the stage manager to turn off the dry ice but she only said she would turn it down. I was outside for quite a while coughing and suffering with breathing difficulties and did not feel like I could go back in. While I was outside the stage manager went over to my partner and said it's only water vapour! That seemed like a very ignorant and defensive statement when research has proven that even in those without asthma, dry ice can cause asthma-like symptoms.
The fact is that it did trigger my asthma and your member of staff's dismissive and ignorant attitude really upset me as it felt like she was trying to invalidate my experience. This level of indifference could lead to someone having much more serious symptoms like an asthma attack and I had to leave earlier than planned to avoid further worsening my symptoms as I was already experiencing respiratory distress, which ruined what was supposed to be an evening of celebration.
The atmosphere was great until this point because of the fantastic performers and there was no need for dry ice, but what really disappointed me was the dismissive and defensive reaction of the member staff trying to say that I should not be reacting to a known asthma trigger. Such a level of ignorance makes me question whether your staff have had the appropriate health and safety training since asthma is a very common condition and asthma attacks can be life threatening. Around 12% of people in the UK are diagnosed with asthma and it kills 3 people in the UK every day. Repeated exposure to dry ice can cause asthma to develop meaning staff are also at risk. How can this be allowed within health and safety law? My asthma is normally well managed and even for me this was a highly unpleasant experience and I felt like I couldn't breathe. Anyone with respiratory issues would be affected by this and even my partner, who does not have breathing difficulties, said he found the dry ice very unpleasant. I do question what health and safety measures you have in place in a venue with limited ventilation to be using a substance which makes breathing difficult.
My impression was that your stage manager simply didn't care that one individual was experiencing unpleasant symptoms.
I am so disappointed, not just by the use of dry ice which could almost be excused if it had not been for the dismissive and defensive attitude of your member of staff. I used to love coming to this venue but will not be returning unless there is a guarantee that dry ice will not be used during performances due to the health risks involved. Otherwise I am afraid you will have lost a previously loyal customer and I will tell all my friends and family that I do not...
Read moreMixed feelings about this place to be honest. Went because i was really looking forward to the Kabaret show and it was 10/10 stars. Absolutely fantastic and very very much recommend it. Food? Well, just ok, bit pricey and simple but ok I guess. Cocktails a bit pricey (around £11) but again ok. Staff? The girl that served us was amazing but the manager and the person I made the booking with I didn't feel comfortable with. I have mobility difficulties so I make sure I check either calling or in person if I can make a reservation in advance and that my needs are taken into consideration for accessibility. I was also travelling with a dog and understood based on the website that dogs are not allowed after certain times (they said because of noise, which I understand) but I still asked ahead of the booking, no expectations. The person that took my reservation said all ok, no problem with dog and would have a booth with view of the stage. When I get to my booking on the same day, I'm stopped outside by security, told I'm not allowed to go in with the dog. I explained and got to speak to the manager who was super sceptical about the booking details. She informs me there are no details of my booking requiring accessibility and the dog being allowed. I said, bluntly, that it was not my business if the employee did not take note of those details and that I had informed them of the circumstances and, should it had not been possible to bring dog or have view of the stage that I would have booked elsewhere and no issue at all as it's understandable each business have their policies (I always expect no dogs allowed just in case and plan ahead for that reason because it's not down to me to decide or impose but still asking is not bad if you're unsure). In the end, I was granted access and dog was allowed but the whole experience (and several remarks about whether I was describing someone that actually worked there and that I was to make reasonable decisions for my dog, which was frankly quite overbearing and snobbish attitude from the manager) affected nevatively the beginning of the night and frankly I'd only go back for the shows and nothing else. Concerning that no details about accessibility were taken upon bringing this up ahead of booking either. My dog was perfectly fine, slept through and actually met the performers, who loved her, but I can understand not all dogs do well with sound and that was the warning. Still, would be nice for managers to let the decision to owners and pets and trust that if something doesn't quite work out owners would be responsible enough to look for a better option or altogether not even think...
Read moreFirst time at Albert's Schloss today but certainly not the last . . . (Update at end)
We (the lad and I) booked a table via their website for 12.15 for an end-of-year lunch.
We were seated at midday by the lovely Ross (top guy - first class in every aspect 👍🏼)
I love the decor - the Alpine look and feel of the place. Chunky wooden benches, amazing look of the bar set up, the lighting, the toilets(important!) and the general vibe of the place. It's all good folks!
Whilst we were looking at the extensive menu, Ross suggested we try a pretzel with cream cheese and some pickles. Err . . . deliciously fresh, warm and oh so good! 👌🏼
Two pints of Goldebrau and we'd decided to have . . .
Me . . .The Schweinshaxe - Pork Knuckle in a rich gravy with red cabbage and I had this with a serving of Sformato - a gorgeously rich mashed potato.
The Lad . . . Ordered The Baron Burger - fully locked and loaded and Truffle Cheese Parmesan Fries.
The knuckle was huuuge! The crispy crackling was just Oooer! The pork was juicy and tasty. With the mash and gravy, I was in big knuckle heaven.
The boy was more than happy with the burger! Big and juicy loaded with bacon and sauerkraut between two tasty buns. what's not to like? The fries were good to go too!
Two more Goldenbrau's and along came a Baked Alaska! (for two to share) Ross promptly pulled a mini blow torch out and started heating the Grand Marnier in a little copper pan then lit it on fire before our very eyes! Over the meringue, it went 🔥🔥🔥
As the meringue was caramelising he asked us to please let the fire burn out before eating it! Absolutely! 🚒 How did it taste?
Meringue-tastic! The meringue the rich vanilla ice cream the hint of lemon and berry jus and the Grand Marnier blew our Lederhosen off! One of the best baked Alaska's I've ever had! 👌🏼
Ross was ever attentive throughout and not annoyingly so! There was a live band playing jazz-style versions of 80's songs. Blondie's Heart of Glass was a particularly brilliant version.
I couldn't knock anything about our experience today and the lad agrees wholeheartedly.
11 out of 10
On our way out we noticed a photo booth so we popped in for three pics for a quid!
Thank you Albert's Schloss and Ross for a cracking end-of-year lunch 🙏🏼👌🏼
Update 3/8/23 . . . Popped in around 2pm today. Got the fondue with bread, potatoes, pickles, bratwurst and chicken wings to dip. Just WOW! Looked after by the lovely Skye and...
