Caribou Poutine — Restaurant in Liverpool

Meh! Chips, cheese and gravy should be as lovely as it sounds but there are issues here that means 2 visits were enough to put us off a 3rd. 1st time was OK, the vegan poutine was very nice, a bit of spice to the gravy and once I'd added the crispy onions it was really tasty. My OH had a steak special but the steak was rubbery. Although the Cinnabuns are gorgeous £3.20 each is way to pricey, a nice trest though. 2nd visit, they were out of a lot of ingredients and I nearly walked into a trap by ordering a vegan mozzarella fella...after questioning the ingredients it turned out that the mozzerella wasnt vegan and they used the same cheese as the vegan poutine, seeing as they were also out of onions, I would have paid them a couple of quid more and just got the basic vegan poutine if Id not spotted it. The server had no allergy knowledge about lactose presence in mozzarella...kept saying it was vegetarian when I was asking about whether it was real dairy and had lactose, the menu board says ask for vegan (and you can get vegan mozzarella subs elsewhere)! We ended up with a really disappointing meal, 50% of the chips in the container were fluffy and had the unpleasant texture of reheated chips. Had stomachache for hours after eating them. The vegan salt and pepper nuggets were bland and dry, not the salt and pepper heat and lovely flavour expected at all and expensive for portion size too, the buffalo chicken pieces worked out at a £1 each but were the size of a fat finger each and covered in a horrid acrid sauce. Never going back. Make our own poutine 1000x better at home. Some really miserable staff members on...

I'm friends with a québécois couple from Canada who livestream on Twitch, and they begged me to try poutine at some point. By chance, Caribou exists, so I decided to go (especially after seeing what the food looked like). It was totally worth the journey all the way into the town centre.

Most close-minded people would look at the food and just say "it's just chips with gravy and cheese, nothing special": hence why they're close minded. Poutine isn't authentic poutine without cheese curds, and from what I hear, they're pretty difficult to get outside of Canada and Wisconsin. There's a reason why it's special.

Anyway, I ordered the steak poutine. The food arrived in about 10 minutes, and it came fresh. The portions are VERY generous (as you can see in the photos, I couldn't even finish the whole thing). Despite the chips being smothered in gravy, they don't go soggy: they retain their crisp. The cheese adds just another level of flavour and texture as it melts in-between the rest. The steak was rather tough but for good reason - the juices perfume the gravy. It's also a rump steak, so it makes sense. Even so, it was cooked to a perfect medium rare.

The staff were also friendly when ordering, which can be a breath of fresh air.

Overall, the food is very rich and is like a warm hug during cold, winter days. It's definitely worth a visit if you're willing to indulge in the great wonders of poutine. I'm definitely coming back to try...

I've usually always had a nice experience here however lately customer service, food and hygiene wise it seems to be going very downhill. The last 3 times I've been have been awful, the staff were rude, the place was dirty the food was cold (steak chewy unedible and freezing).

I always order gravy separate but on my recent visit they forgot to put it in the bag and when I politely asked about it whilst juggling 3 bags one of the workers dumped it on the counter and said "oh yeah here it is", it spilled when put in the bag and when I asked for a tissue rudely stated and pointed they're at the end leaving me to awkwardly clean everything up.

Also I ordered a steak poutine with crispy onions which they charged an extra 40 pence for and didn't even put on!!! (Shown on pictures)

I think the staff should be more aware of what 'customer service' means. They treat people (aswell as uber eats drivers) like intruders in their home and one specific worker, ginger with glasses seems to think she's the owner!! Bossing all the others around.

Definitely needs another trip from the hygiene inspector because it's clear that it shouldn't have been even given a 3 out of 5 Star Food hygiene rating.

Safe to say it's not a place I look forward to visiting anymore and I...
