Teething Problems..
This is a new restaurant, so as a lover of the Mexican it replaced I was keen to try this place out… having visited yesterday I thought id leave the owner some (hopefully) helpful advice...
STAFFING - The place was fully packed yesterday with just one poor waiter run off his feet, the guy needs help URGENTLY.
FOOD - We ordered the chicken selects (at £6ish) for a starter - they were tiny, visibly burnt and almost impossible to eat, so... off to a bad start - what compounded this is that 2-3 separate staff had handled them and non noticed the burning smell or the charcoal look to them? - I was quite disappointed by that.
We also ordered the potatoes (again over £6) - these where better, but again VERY small, and if your charging £6 for 1 new-potato cut in half don’t then charge extra for a bit of bacon on top - at that price point a bit of bacon should be included!
-
So the starters where a no-go sadly, BUT...the beef chimichanga I received for the main was ABSOLUNTELY FANTASTIC and id recommend it to anyone if there visiting - I would say that plain rice with no sauce at all on the side is quite literally prison-food in some countries. - Spice up the side a bit, chips? sauce? side-salad? anything would be better.
-
Tacos, Lovely too... but problem with the menu (see menu bit below) as I’m sure it said it came with chicken/beef (with yet another upgrade of a different beef/chicken too) but we received a vegetarian one? - if your charging a premium please include a bit of meat as standard - especially if its a key part of the dish, it would be like ordering spagbol and just getting the noodles in an Italian haha - makes no sense.
MENU - unfathomable - they need to chuck it in the bin and start again..
-
It says in big, bold, orange writing at the top of the page that ‘all steaks come with a side and chips’ - but then its directly followed by a price list of ‘sides and chips for your steak’ - so which one is it? - mabey I’m an idiot and mis-read it, but I shouldn’t need a degree to read a menu, its just poorly thought out and needs re-doing.
-
The ‘steak guide’ at the back says ‘this steak is best cooked rare to well done’ - wow, jee, thanks for that absolutely useless guide there mate haha!
-
There’s about 30 other mistakes on there but there the two that really stuck out
PRICES - The chimichanga was very reasonable - as where the taco’s (if they came with meat) - the starters where overpriced and tiny (and awfully cooked) - but my biggest gripe was the Steak Menu -
£45+ for a steak? In west derby? - AND THEN YOU NEED TO PAY EXTRA FOR CHIPS? - you’re not in London mate , that price is absurd...I'd be suprised if you’d sold a single one since it opened - also, if I’m paying £45 a plate I want a £45 service to go with it.. not one waiter rushed off his feet with 20 tables and then to have to pay extra for bit of sauce - its just not a nice enough venu to be charging those kinds of prices and they need lowering, while im at it... £4ish for a becks blue is a ripoff too.
So....
In short, would I go again? - Yes I would - but just for the chimichonga at the moment.. but "ill be back" with a hopefully better review soon.
Would I recommend it? - Not yet - but hopefully with a few changes I would soon. - again, if your thinking of going just remember its new and im sure it will improve so give it a shot! :)
