We had high hopes for this place but were sadly very disappointed , bottomless brunches are really popular now as most will know, so we had a huge range of choice but having weighed up the prices of other places some at £30-£35 and others £40-£45 we thought manasab was the higher end of the scale at £47.50 for the dim sum disco but we took into consideration that it was live entertainment ( saxophone player) a main off the menu and premium drinks ie Smirnoff vodka, captain morgans run we presumed they would be properly made shaken cocktails freshly made as it advertised premium so we decided it was worth the extra for that. Sadly what we got was not premium at all, we arrived for out booking sat down and got our first round of drinks the waitress was lovely and told us we could order 2 drinks at a stone which we did, what they presented was a pre made cocktail that was from a tap I had strawberry daiquiri it was the most sickly horrible drink I’ve ever had, over powering sweet and sour I had one drink and felt sick .. food orders were taken within 3/4 minutes they were on our table so eyebrows were raised as to wether this was all pre made reheated food .. it was nice enough, definitely edible but something I’d probably get in a high end microwave meal from marks and Spencer I’d say so nowhere near restaurant quality for almost £50! We spoke to the waitress who got the manager who said he was a new manager , he was lovely couldn’t apologise enough validated our concerns and I actually felt sorry for him that this place is falsely advertising this brunch getting the masses through the door and not delivering maybe they bank on people being drunk and just not saying anything I don’t know, it was my sisters birthday and we just wanted to leave. We didn’t eat anymore food or have any more drinks other than the one as we didn’t want to pay for it. He offered to give us some free freshly made cocktails off the menu .. pina colada I got it was awful again just so strong no actual coconut flavour I am sure it was just rum and pineapple juice my friend had a drink that honeslru tasted like a strong medicine so we just said we don’t even want these sorry and we left. Can’t fault the staff they were very lovely and could see all the issues themselves. I don’t doubt they do good food when it’s open as a regular restaurant but for the brunch I’d just give it a miss, it’s budget drinks and food and if it was budget price and they had been transparent about it just being so you don’t mind that’s your choice but to go in with expectations of premium and get that it’s so disappointing. We left snd went to the duke street market instead and it’s worlds apart in terms of did I qualify and food just wanted to warn others if your having a special occasion that you might have ruined by a bad experience they did try to fix it but the cocktails seriously need looking at maybe if your just having wine or spirits you would be fine but they need to fix their cockatail making and the...
Read moreFirst time at Mamasan and it was...OK. The service was great - friendly and attentive - although our starter plates were removed before one of the party had finished eating; our server didn't know if tea was an option on the menu and we waited 25 mins for a slice of cheesecake, which our server said she had had to go and get herself as the kitchen was too busy! The restaurant looks good and is very Instagramable. Comfortable, but very loud. Not easy to have a conversation across the table, but perfect if you want to eavesdrop on the shouty tables next to you. The food - looks good- but there were a number of problems - the sweetcorn fritters were over fried and hard; the iberico pork bun just tasted of sauce; the pork was lost; both massaman curries were too hot. If you choose a massaman it's because you want fragrance and layers of flavour. Chilli was the only layer. I loved the idea of roast peaches but again they were lost in the overly spiced sauce. The pad thai was too sweet and the noodles were stodgy. The soft shell crab was again, over fried and hard. The delicate crab flesh should be soft but it tasted of fried oil and nothing else. The cheesecake was supposed to have a rose jelly but there was no subtlety. The black sesame layer was nice but the tahini ice cream was missing off the plate. We mentioned it to the server and she just smiled...I don't think she could hear us properly! The cocktails again were OK. They look great but they don't deliver on depth of flavour. The fruity ones were wishy washy and the short ones didn't have the punch you would expect. I know this may sound like a review that is just opinion based, after all everyone has a different palette but I was hoping for more. I am a Masterchef quarter finalist and I made a few South East Asian dishes during my time there. I like to think I know authentic flavours and Mamasan just didn't deliver. I chose places to eat carefully as I want to experience something excellent and superior to different to the usual high street fare. Mamasan unfortunately is a case of style...
Read moreThe food was mostly excellent, but the service could have been better.
We were here for a special occasion so opted for some of the fancier dishes. The starters were amazingly good, really creative and tasty, with lovely fresh ingredients. We had the squid, the scallops and the edamame hummus, all excellent. For mains we had the monkfish and the sea bass.
However, some of the food was not as described in the menu. My seabass was supposed to come with surf clams but came with mussels. The dish was delicious and I like mussels, so I shrugged it off and didn't say anything. But it would have been courteous to be informed of any menu changes before ordering.
My companion ordered the creme brulee which according to the menu was supposed to come with charred pear and oats. Instead it was a very ordinary creme brulee.
When he queried it the waitress went away to enquire, then came back and said somewhat dismissively that the pear was just "a garnish" and chef had run out. Again, it would have been nice to be forewarned. We were not charged for it, but it took a bit of a shine off things, especially as the waitress was a bit weird about us asking why the dessert wasn't as described.
The cheesecake he got instead was ok but not that exciting. My raspberry sorbet was excellent, with really intense raspberry flavour. But we probably would have been better off not bothering with desserts.
Overall, the service did not feel very warm or considerate. Maybe I'm being fussy or unfair, but this isn't a cheap evening out. And it all just felt a bit off, like nobody working there (apart from the amazing chef) was really invested in people having a nice time.
So although we loved most of the food (especially the amazing starters) we won't be rushing back. There are other restaurants with equally good or better food that look after...
