Liverpool, where do you start? A city rich full of history. A whopping seventy five percentage of the population are of Irish descent. Since being the European city of culture in 2008, it’s really come of age. So well catered for tourists yet still holding onto its heritage. Outside of London it has the most listed buildings in the U.K. It’s not all Ferry Across The Mersey or The Cavern Quarter.
After three days here and multiple visits since 1989, I wanted something a little different. On the very artsy area of Hope Street, I found just that. A coffee house, American themed without the Stars and Stripes. Mustard coloured leather chesterfields with dark wooden cladding interior.
Tables ideally placed so as not to be too intrusive to other diners. The ambiance was perfect, natural light, swing music played at a comfortable volume and professional staff that were courteous, attentive and engaging. The wonderful Tegan was my server and her colleagues also checked in on me if she was busy. I ordered the Grande Bouche and a mocha.
The French Toast ( sweet brioche bread griddled in a homemade egg & vanilla batter ) was served with four strips of streaky bacon and Canadian maple syrup. It was absolutely delicious and after twenty minutes I ordered an Americano coffee.
I was enjoying the ambiance so much, I didn’t want to leave. So after another 15 minutes, I ordered some other side dishes. I chose some streaky bacon, chipolata sausages, poached egg and homemade hash potatoes. It arrived on three small dishes and was faultless. The poached eggs were magnificent and the yolk a perfect dark yellow. Potatoes were crispy and soft, whilst the bacon was crispy and the sausages cooked through.
You weren’t rushed or made to feel you had outstayed your welcome. Couples, friends and solo diners were eating there. My only gripe was that a small dog was in the restaurant not too far away from me. That was fine initially until two more diners joined them. They were oblivious to their social awareness and the table got rowdy, spoiling the chilled vibe. It was at that point, I asked for my bill and...
Read moreBreakfast was AMAZING!! Pancakes with Nutella and granola was to die for. Coffee was strong and tasty I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. So much so I lost track of time, the huge portions and the great conversation I was having with my friend lead us to lose track of time. 1hour and 45 minutes after arriving, perhaps 15 minutes after paying a manager approached our table and asked us to leave. He was polite enough explaining they were busy but it came across blunt (they were obviously rushed off their feet). I was annoyed as this was the first time we had been notified about time. There was no reference anywhere online about how long each booking gets a table for, and none of our servers throughout the morning let on we were running out of time, it appeared unnecessary to have a manager who had not served us come over and ask us to leave. It felt like 'now we have your money we no longer want you here'. I appreciate they were busy but a little more thought into how to ask you customers to leave could be considered. This was my second time at Hope street, I normally dine at Moose Coffee Dale Street and think I will continue to do so there, you feel more...
Read moreCan't say I was very impressed with moose coffee. While the stylisation is lovely and the staff where kind enough, the food left a lot to be desired. Both my partner and I had the "Green Line" which sounded great. I love vegetarian breakfasts that include hallumi but this proved to be a mistake.
Both my partner and I found 2-3 small chunks of hallumi in the entire dish and way too much artichoke for the taste of anyone.
I understand why this was done. Artichoke is much cheaper than hallumi but had this been a meat dish and they'd skipped out on the meat like this then there would absolutely be complaints.
On top of this, my partner ordered the daily special milkshake, a chocolate orange and coffee milkshake. Sounded lovely. She complained to me that the coffee was overpowering any other flavour in the milkshake. I took a sip to confirm and you could absolutely not taste any chocolate orange at all.
Overall, I think that it's a nice cafe and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were just running low on stock for a few things. If that's the case though, I'd expect them to tell me before I order so I can avoid...
