We ordered the Beetroot, Blood Orange and Mixed Leaf salad. Really disappointed. Two very small (less than .5 cm cubes) pieces of beetroot, no blood orange- just a regular one (two tiny slivers) in a sea of mixed leaves. I must say given that Beetroot and Blood Orange were the leading ingredients we had expected that they would play a larger part in the salad. The roast dinner was ok- the potatoes were a little over done and hard to cut. The location was excellent on Hope St, but with so many other choices on Hope Street and Faulkner St, I am not sure we will go back to the Dog and Collar in a hurry. Toilets needed to be looked at as in the women’s upstairs one door does not lock and toilet paper strewn on the floor and on the toilet seat. I do hope that the pub management do consider this review and think about whether or not they are an inclusive place where people can choose from a range of foods. The dessert menu did not only exclude vegans but also anyone who had an egg, dairy or gluten allergy or intolerance. Eating out with an allergy or intolerance is not easy but having a vegan option means that those people can eat a dessert without feeling like they are getting special attention or being demanding.

Dog & collar We visited with friends on a Friday night the first impressions were great, the table was set out lovely with white table clothes, wine glasses & candles. Simple but elegant. We ordered a bottle of wine which was served at the table, we ordered the mushrooms & crumpets to start and the creamed leeks which my partner and I shared - both were great thoroughly enjoyed. For the main I had the burger, which was good but didn’t stand out as much as the rest of the food. My parter had the celeriac for main which I have to say was surprisingly our favourite dish - it was packed with flavour and I definitely had food envy after trying it. The servers during the visit were lovely, enough engaging chatter without being intrusive on our visit. All in all a good visit and I would recommend to anyone who is thinking about it

The large building is split into three options, the taproom, the tavern and the dining room. We chose the taproom. Initially I was not impressed, the drinks service was good and the selection large. But we waited a long time for the food which was a surprise as the place was empty just another couple having a lunch time drink. I chose the burger and my partner the fish and chips. They were an absolute joy to see and eat. Could not have been better, well worth the wait. It is a little bit pricey but without doubt worth it. The dining room, all white linen and roomy was open later for pre theatre meals, but we intend to go back on a Sunday for the Roast menu, such was are enjoyment of the food. Thanks to Jacob for the service of drinks!

We were really looking forward to our meals but was left very disappointed. We had a table booked for 3 people for 4:30pm on a Sunday so thought it may be busy but when we arrived it was very quite so we thought great service and food will be prompt, no such luck! Drink came quickly and so did the menus, we then asked for a child's menu (as my wife has had stomach surgery and can't eat full meals) which eventually came and we ordered right away as we were very hungry. when ordering we explained the child's Sunday Roast meal was for my wife and they took all our orders Then it all went down hill The child's meal came first but was just about warm, after eventually getting a waitress's attention I got it sent back, when it came back it had been microwaved to an inch of its life and they then explained that the child's meal always come out warm not piping hot as it they are for children but it was not relayed to the kitchen it was for an Adult and where sorry about that, in the meant time the two remaining meals still had not come out. When they came out my chicken pie was hot but the potatoes and vegetables were cold so that was taken away. the fish and chips was all hot but the chips were under cooked and hard and the fish batter was rock hard (there is crisp and then rock hard) My pie then came back and I must admit the pie was really nice with loads of flavour but the rest was inedible, potatoes where rock hard, and vegetables were boiled within a inch of there lives and bland and rubbery. my wife then said she really could only eat the meat on her roast as the roast potatoes where rock hard and vegetables like mine where inedible. Needless to say when they collected the plates and asked was everything OK I told them to look at the food going back and why it was going back. when the bill eventually came after asking 3 times for it there was nothing taken off or an apology, so with drinks it was ÂŁ95 and a waste of money May have been a off night for the staff but as I said it was no busy so no real excuse Defiantly will not...

Four of us ate here on a Tuesday at 6:30pm. Three of us opted for the 3-course pre-theatre menu at ÂŁ30 whilst the other had Fish & Chips off the main menu. The fish 'n chips were excellent. The burger and chips were good, excellent big beef patty done to a tee and perfect flavour too. Nice bun, good size to handle but "brown" sauce was a little overwhelming. Steak frites was a lovely dish (it comes with fries and peppercorn sauce - this isn't clear on the menu). We had one of each of the desserts and they were all good. Scotch egg starters were really good with a thick crunchy tasty coating/shell. The "Liverpool Sausage" was a big let down though. It's an artisan sausage made from locally sourced ingredients. It's a bit dense, heavy and dry though with a "gamey" taste to it. Serving it with just a dollop of mega-hot mustard just doesn't work visually or from a taste perspective. It needs something really wet with it, I'd suggest gravy maybe? Overall it was good food at a very fair price. Our server Dylan was helpful, polite and always on hand when needed - just what you want. One thing to note though.. there was quite a wait between courses. We didn't dawdle on arrival and got drinks and food ordered quickly. Despite the dining room being relatively quiet with only 3 other covers it took nearly 90 minutes to receive and eat the 3 courses - felt like each course should've come about 10 minutes quicker than it did. It didn't bother us unduly BUT had we been due at the theatre it might have been an issue. I'd suggest theatre goers start no later than 6pm and maybe tell your server you need to be away by 7:30pm. So, nice place, good food, great staff, busy bar downstairs - it's well...

Think we got unlucky with our visit
we arrived and our table wasn’t ready yet which was fine so we had a drink downstairs for fifteen minutes or so. We were sat on the end of the bank seating across from the stairs up and unfortunately this seemed to be a blind spot for the waiting staff.

We had Sunday roasts (beef and chicken) no honey roasted carrots or creamed greens available so we didn’t order any sides but we had the bread with bone marrow which was lovely. We arrived 20 minutes before the table next to us however they were served their mains before us, had them cleared and paid before our plates had even been cleared. We were left without knives with our food infront of us and no offers of drink refills from the team.

The food was nice, meat good quality but no carrot purĂ©e we had batons. I wouldn’t say it was worth more than what we paid for. The super slow/inattentive service also meant we skipped dessert (custard tart not available).

The team are clearly new but from what I could tell no one was receiving the lack of service we were along the row from us so I think we just got unlucky with our placement.

Nice place that’s been done out well but I’d probably only come back for drinks downstairs after tonight.

If you’re booking Sunday roast I’d go earlier in the day(our booking was 6pm) to avoid all the...
