Third time at The Betsey in the last 10 years today and I think it's been the best visit to this old London Victorian Pub, which has become an occasional and handy watering hole. It's changed a lot over those years!
After a visit to the new Postal Museum and the Mail Rail nearby at Mount Pleasant we headed back roughly Farringdon Station way and I aimed us for some lunch at The Betsey.
Everything looked pretty good inside now and we were greeted well by the bloke behind the bar and assigned a table as we wanted to eat. Nothing appeared too much trouble, the menu looked good and the pint of Shepherd Neame's Master Brew (if I recall rightly) was going down really well.
The food was tasty and well presented, when it arrived and apart from nearly choking on my first chip (support was near at hand immediately!!) it was all really nice.
The Betsey is much, much improved and seems to have become a music venue since my last visit. Eclectic, cozy, pleasantly noisy and chatty, with great staff, good food and really nice beers. What's not to love??
Handy for Farringdon, which is great for getting out and away to the sticks.... Bedfordshire in our case!!! Brilliant!!! Thanks to everyone at...
Read moreThis is not your average pub with average pub food. Yes, they have a good selection of cask ales on draft and other beers but the food is what stands out. While the menu is limited, the quality is excellent. I had the bavette steak and it was tender, beautifully marinated and deliscious. The menu changes frequently and the chef told me, for example, he had added dauphinoise potatoes as the colder weather was approaching and he felt it appropriate. They also have a not bad Merlot as the house red wine and to top it of a selection of single malt whiskys.
The pub first opened in 1865 according to staff, who are very willing to talk about the history. The first London subway train ran right under it -- the train had a steam engine. You don't need reservations but there is a multi-cultural, multi-age crowd that seems to really enjoy the place, perhaps even...
Read moreA delightful pub with a tidy smart feel whilst also a relaxed English urban pub feel.
Although slightly more seasoned than I personally like ( typical of restaurants) , the chicken pie and chips I thought was really very very good. I was very pleased. Thank you. However, as several have commented, the food is rather slow in coming which is ok if you have time to while away but to be borne in mind if just a lunch break. The menu appears to be considered on a daily basis.
In line with London prices, so not cheap!
Bar manager was friendly and efficient.
I will definitely return here and maybe even when they have live music acts too, a number of which were advertised.
I liked the real flowers on the tables, which suggests...
