Another pub/bar/brewery review from me.
I visited Bird House Brewery with some colleagues after work for a few drinks on the 6th of June 2024. This place is a little tucked away treasure near to Herne Hill Station. Being a recommendation from a friend, I thought I would give it a go as the “new kid” on the block.
The atmosphere of the venue was calming, chill and inviting. However, I can definitely picture it becoming the music venue it has been in the past.
The theme of the decor was clear and prominent throughout the setting, I would describe it as a collaboration between industrial and botanical; having the brewery machinery layered inside and out as well as mirrored windows surrounded by plants for that greenhouse effect.
The crowd I witnessed was mixed ages, with a large percentage of Gen Z, a few millennials and I presume Gen X or Baby Boomers. The only issues I can pin point from the atmosphere was that our table was slightly wonky, an easy fix that I am sure, had we asked, the staff would have sorted. In addition, there was a moment of accidental phone call playing over the speaker, perhaps a do not disturb setting put on the phone. All very small fixes!
The service was plain and simple, the bartenders were nice and welcoming with a slight edge to them. They were quick with serving my colleagues and very understanding of us wanting to take the beers back to the table while others decided what they wanted. From my colleagues' perspective they seemed to have a great understanding of which beverage matched what pallet.
I myself am not much of a beer drinker, I was contemplating their sassy cider, however, in the end, I settled for their organic white wine. I am not an expert on drinks but I do love a good review and as someone that has only recently started gathering a pallet for wine, I can say that it was lovely! Soft on the tongue, not invasive, sweet but not sickly, with fruity aromatics; would order the wine again. The price point was great value for money, as we know the cost of living is hard, but this bottle of wine was relatively cheap, split between two, being just over £20 (for their cheapest bottle). Gasps I even tried their beer, as one of my friends had to go and left me with half a pint. I am not usually a beer drinker but this beer (not sure what one he ordered) was lovely! I might even come back and get a half pint of it. I also caught eye of some of the food being served, however, I did not get a chance to try it so I will definitely be back for that.
Overall, as Google does not allow 4 and a half stars, I am giving this place a 5 star rating; simply because it is an independent business but I always believe there's room for improvement. The atmosphere was stunning, aside from a wobbly chair and someone's phone accidentally going off on the speaker, it was inviting, playful and calming all at the same time. The service was great, I would like to see this on a busier day to see how the staff hold up. The products were stunning and the pricing was affordable. I would recommend this place to any person running around South London. You’ll be seeing me again in the...
Read moreI am a local and used to come to the Brewery that was here before it all the time. Was super excited to go to Bird House when it opened but sadly had a really scary experience. The small slight man who works behind the burger kitchen was incredibly aggressive and said we were lying about our order (!) when we mentioned one of our burgers was meant to be a double (which was indeed on our receipt!). The manager , Pierre kindly gave us a full refund and offered us some free drinks but we felt really on edge. It seems quite dangerous for a chef with that level of volatility to be in charge of kitchen equipment etc. Was too scared to even mention there was a long hair in the food (presumably from the girl serving the food who didn't have her hair tied up). Unless they make some changes to their staffing or hygiene I sadly won't...
Read moreI visited the brewery previously situated in place of this one and loved it. This experience since coming back was not good. In fairness we came around 9pm on a Saturday so perhaps our fault however I wasn’t expecting the brewery to turn into a nightclub. Couldn’t even hear anyone speaking and just full of drunk young people who don’t know what good beer is. The beers selection was ok and the staff you could tell were doing there best but if you are doing the Brixton ale walk go much earlier in the day to this place - just sucked and the experience...
