Very disappointed my a recent trip to Breidbakers. This place has been on my 'London List' for a while and I've just got round to trying it for the first time - I was excited to go having been checking on their Instagram for some time! I arrived at 10am on a Saturday. There was no queue and the staff were friendly. I was recommended the Hazelnut Pain au Chocolat. I am a huge hazelnut fan and love a pain au chocolat so was very much sold. I paid £5, a high price but quite common in London. Additionally, I price I would be willing to pay for a quality baked good. Unfortunately this was not a quality baked good. The pastry was stale and completely soggy - I couldn't even pick it up without it flopping over! There was absolutely zero structural integrity, which a good quality fresh pastry should have. I am not sure if they were the days prior or storen incorrectly? Also, the hazelnut inside was scant and the flavour was very much lacking. I am very disappointed in this experience - arriving 30m after a bakery has opened should guarantee fresh baked goods. I am upset to have wasted £5 on something which should have theoretically been very good but was actually quite unpalatable - most ended up in the bin. It is a shame to have had this experience and I feel reluctant to return due to the fear of wasting more money and further...

From their range of loaves, to their croissants that rival some of the best I’ve had in France, to their doughnuts which, as an American expat, I have unrelenting high standards for, I’m yet to find something that Breidbakers does that isn’t a complete and total knock-out. The coffee is also better than many high-end, dedicated coffee shops.
Perhaps I’m just late to the party, but this place is a true sleeper that doesn’t get anywhere near the recognition...
Read moreAwesome little bakery where you can watch them make bread under a train arch. Totally worth a visit. I look for excuses to get over to that neighbourhood because this place is such a treasure. The rye is excellent and they even make a pretty good oatmilk latte.
Update: Years on, still the best. I've made friendly banter many times with several of the staff, the day-old bread is a bargain if you can get it, and their weekend treats are special and experimental - though a bit pricey. Still, the value is there, and it's made in the shop, even...
