🇬🇧 Cafe Japan: London's Best-Kept Omakase Secret! 🍣✨

We used to go to Cafe Japan for years and were so sad when it closed for a few years, with management/ownership changing. It was always excellent. Last night we finally went back after so many years, and let me tell you…it’s still excellent!! Despite new ownership, the menu is largely unchanged. The ‘greatest’ hits (at least the ones we love) like crispy yellowtail inside out roll (now called “cooked yellowtail inside out roll”), salmon salad (now called “Salmon Sashimi salad”), agedashi tofu (my photo shows two large square chunks, but you get four…I just forgot to photograph them before eating!), soft shell crab…..still amazing! We ordered Miso aubergine last night and it was sooo delish! If you have missed going to Cafe Japan….its time to go back, you won’t be disappointed.

Heard very good things about the place so had a very high expectations before I went. The fact is that service was impeccable with really nice interior decor. We ordered Omakase sushi set, the scallop was the highlight for me, it was just so fresh that it tasted sweet, other items were generally very nice,EXCEPT one that had crispy rice and some sort of tuna I think, did not enjoy that at all. I also was disappointed that it didn’t include urchin and was not told by the waitress to eat it in the order usually Omakase would serve (white fish first then moving on to fattier fish). I also don’t recommend the tempura or the squid karaage as they are somewhat mediocre and over cooked too. But generally it was a nice and pleasant experience and would visit again just for the sushi.

When coming back from my first visit to Japan I obviously missed the food and the simple places in the country where you could still get authentic and good sushi at a fair price. After a bit of research I stumbled upon this place. To say it is unpretentious from the outside would be an understatement. Once inside, you immediately get the feeling you are up for some good food though. Everyone is friendly and you can see a few hints that indicate this is a proper place for sushi. The quality of the fish is excellent as you would expect from a place that has the same source as some of London's top high end omakase restaurants. The rice is really good, not heavily seasoned or sweetened and served at room temperature. The prices are absolutely fair and I would say for £50-100 per person, you can really treat yourself (£100 will be at the top end with the most expensive items ordered). You wouldnt get anywhere near that at the Mayfair places. I would always recommend the sushi vs. the donburis though as the skills of the sushi master come out better here although a premium kaisen chirashi don for £30 is...

Spend almost £300 for 4 people, Starters absolutely tasteless! Soft shell grab £11.50 not taste a bit of grab !very small portion. Aubergine was £6 for half small aubergine which is rip off! Wafu salad £7.50 is like a £1.20 small bag Morrison salad with some sauce! King pawns tempura £15 for 4 x 16/32 size prawns, Sushi’s mediocre too small in size cheap frozen sweet prawns for premium prices some fish slices before frozen them thawed put on rice! From what I can see all customers there on my visit mainly young to middle aged people that been rip off happily !!mind boggling!!! Really don’t understand what is good about this restaurant, very disappointed! Perhaps people in UK don’t really know what is Japanese food at this price point this well below par!! BTW I been to all over Japan in...

Visited on a Sunday (mother's day) and yes, expected that it would be busier than usual but for a fairly small restaurant, the slow and appalling service cannot be excused. We had booked a table for around 1.15pm but still had to wait 30mins before our table was free so we can be seated.  I think this is due to a combination of the poor management of the front staff and reservation system, also the slow service of the food being made/served up.

None of the staff were welcoming or friendly throughout our meal. No apology for the lateness or inconvenience to our meal at all.

Sushi and hot food tasted quite good (when it eventually arrived), although the karage (fried chicken) was not crispy at all.

Unlikely to return or recommend to others to dine in.  Perhaps their take away service...
