As a coeliac it was a bit of a gamble. The staff firstly didn't know what a gluten allergy is, they don't have any allergen matrix and there is no info on the menu. When I asked if I could have the sausages our waitress said she was 70% sure I could, then said they are vegetarian. I had to explain that almost all vegetarian sausages had gluten in them but that I wasn't a vegetarian I was a coeliac. She didn't know what was going on. I asked if she could check the sausages and on doing so it turns out that they did contain gluten. I ordered bacon, scrambled egg (which she said I couldn't have because it contained milk, I explained gluten wasn't in milk), hash browns and beans, the beans they forgot to add and had to bring separately.
The food was tasty though and despite asking for ketchup I was given brown sauce, which also contains gluten. We had 3 different servers so clearly information wasn't passed along.
I find it amazing that despite being a legal requirement to have clear information available on allergies that there are still places who don't. Even if it's not written down staff need to be aware. These were not. On the plus side the food was nice the tea was lovely and the environment was clean.
Just don't eat here if you have an allergy. It will...
Read moreWhat a little gem of a place this is!! Wanted some breakfast as the hotel we stayed at didnt have any cooked food. Walking to the train station and discovered it on the corner of the street, looked very tempting so we went inside where we were greeted by 2 smiling staff. It reminded us of a typical cafe in Italy with its chilled drinks cabinet on one side, and a mouthwatering display of home made cakes and savouries on the other. We were looking for a full English breakfast and boy, did we find one. Probably one of the best we'd ever eaten, each element on the plate was a 10/10! And the hash browns deserved their own accolade they were so crispy and tasty! The sausages were meaty, the bacon was thickly sliced and not overcooked, the grilled tomatoes were properly cooked, not just warmed up and hard, the beans actually came on the plate, not in the silly pot, the flat mushroom was huge, the eggs were soft and yolky, even the toast was thickly cut perfection! We couldn't leave without taking away a couple of slices of blueberry and lemon cream gateau! We are definitely going to visit again next time we are...
Read moreI had arrived to England for my first time ever. I stepped into this establishment with my aunt's husband who picked me up from the airport and took me out to eat because I was starving after traveling 11 hours from California.
My aunt's husband is a bit older. When our waitress came to take our order, a thin blonde woman with square black glasses, both he and I had trouble understanding her accent.
"What, are you deaf?" She asked him.
"Are you deaf?"
"Is that the problem?"
I was in absolute shock. It was surreal.
She just stared at him waiting for an answer.
"Or is it my accent?"
He is slightly hearing impaired. But I'm not, and I couldn't understand her either. It was incredibly rude, aggressive, and unnecessary. And on top of that, she was impatient taking our orders. Everyone else who served us there after she brought us our food was kind.
I was staying across the street, and on multiple occasions, they were open while the other cafes were closed. I found myself hungry at times, but I refused to return there on...
