I thought I knew most pubs in Stratford but this place was off my radar and is a hidden gem. Don’t be put off by or weary of it being a ‘heavy metal’ pub, it is, actually a lovely and super-friendly old school London boozer. Lovely polite, friendly and kind staff; and prices for drinks are super affordable and not typical astronomical East London gastropub prices. Came here on Saturday for a memorial event in the basement meeting room/ gig area; it offered the rare opportunity for us to use PowerPoint for a memorial service. Staff, Ann and Castro, who helped us set up were incredibly friendly, polite, kind and efficient. I appreciated Ann’s advice that I should not order a pint of lime cordial for a friend and she very kindly mixed it with soda, as said it would be too sweet. You rarely receive kindness and gentle advice from East London bar staff - most average bar staff work on autopilot mode. Pub food here was exceptionally good, affordable and served in gargantuan portions. You can go to a microbrewery in Hackney Wick and you will only be offered cold food or asked to order from an outsourced pizza delivery service, here the portions are huge - and served hot! I ordered buffalo wings, chips and halloumi fries. Although the buffalo wings were breaded, which is quite unusual, they were well cooked, crispy and served with a tangy dip. Halloumi fries were crunchy and well-cooked. Overall, a lovely pub with extremely kind and friendly staff. Loved reading the Iron Maiden memorabilia, which was plastered virtually everywhere upstairs. A great venue for an event, intimate gig - the staff are warm, friendly and accommodating. I look forward to visiting here again. Thank you Ann,...

Never travelled so far just to get a meal, I just had to visit the pub where Iron Maiden 1st started off back in the early days. Dispite it not being as big as I was expecting, it was still a great little place, lots of Iron Maiden pictures & memorabilia along the walls in a tastefull fashion & not overdone. We started off with a pint of the old faithful, a nice cold Trooper, I then tried the trooper IPA, (but wasn't fussed) so had another Trooper next. Then it was time for food, 5:15pm they brought the menus round (as food is only served from 5:00pm) which also has Iron Maiden & Trooper influenced dishes. Of course I HAD to try the Trooper burger & it really didn't disappoint AT ALL. Best burger I have had in a long time & very filling too. We also ordered nachos too & even though there were 3 of us sharing them,, we still couldn't eat all of them as well as our main course. Got talking to owner when he brought our food over & what a lovely guy. Telling us all about the band & the experiences he has had with them at the Cart & Horses & elsewhere. He then showed us around & down stairs where all the gigs are now held in their old cellar. We bought a bit of Iron Maiden / Cart & Horses merchandise & went out to wait for our Taxi. He then asked if we would like him to take some photos of us all together outside the pub (soo nice). It was all in all a fantastic experience & fantastic pints & fantastic food & I bet it would be fantastic to see a band there live (which they have soo many playing on a regular basis) loved the whole experience. Thank you Cart & Horses very much 👍" Up the...

Treasure of the london rock scene pubs ... i must say that my evening would be ruined if not for this amazing place. I got there by accident and not by first choice. I wanted to go to different pub near by but they did not let me in because I was wearing a cap ( i will write separate review ). Yes , you read good. A CAP . So i decided to go to this pub instead and my evening was really great. It is not only because of the history this.place has with Iron Maiden . The most important thing is that this pub has a very uniqe climat which is missing today in most of the pubs I was visiting lately. This place is different. It has its own spirit and you can feel it before you even enter. By night it gives the.vibe of london of XVIII century , with all this little lamps outside and if you lucky and there is a fog , it takes you back to the times of london of jack the ripper ... Or whenever your imagination wants to take you :) I am sorry., I just love this place . Inside you have few big tv screens and the football game was on. Im a fan too. I orderd burger and it was delicious and freshly made. I had also couple of beers and they were excellent too. Place is clean and well managed by a family, so maybe that is why. The have pool table too and there is a garden as well. Good choice of eveeything you need for wonderfull evening and easy accecible by disabled people . Plus you have music live too. There is maybe many pubs around stratford but I tell you now , this is the place for you if you want to be yourself. Great personel and great folks coming here....

The pub is quite spacious, offering a varied selection of beers, ales and spirits. Food is also served and the prices are very reasonable. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you may have. There are also rooms that can be rented, for those needing a place to stay. Music is pumped through a sound system, while Live Music, quizzes and more happen most evenings. Brief History When I was just 10 years young, in 1982, I purchased my first 7" single. It was Iron Maiden's 'Run to the Hills'. I have been a fan of theirs ever since, so I decided that it was high time that I visited The Cart & horses, Stratford, where Iron Maiden performed their first gig, back in 1976. The Cart & Horses was built prior to 1765, at 150-152 The Grove. It was in around 1880 that the premises were rebuilt on their current site, at 1 Maryland Point, adjacent to the old premises. The old building survived until its demolition in 1970. Steve Harris, founder member of Iron Maiden, originally played three of six gigs at The Cart & Horses, with his band Gypsy's Kiss, in 1973. When the band split, he joined Smiler and continued to play gigs here. After leaving Smiler, Steve Harris formed Iron Maiden, on Christmas Day 1975, and this new band, which consisted of Steve Harris, Dave Sullivan, Paul Day, Ron Matthews and Terry Rance, would play their first gig at The Cart & Horses, for the princely sum of £10. Iron Maiden performed their last gig here, on April 7th, 1978, when they consisted of Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Barry Purkis and Dennis Willcock.

It’s so good to see decent rock pubs still about with this one being famed for being “the” Iron Maiden pub and once inside there’s no denying it. There’s the blue plaque on the inside wall, the complete selection of Trooper beers and everything being Maiden themed. But if you’re not a fan, don’t let this intimidate you into not going. I like Maiden, one of my best ever gigs was Maiden in Leeds ‘23 but I can’t say I’m a knowledgeable fan. However, this isn’t that type of place that tests your passion or loyalty. The staff are really welcoming, attentive, accommodating and friendly, and there’s a great vibe in there. After a few pints in, thought it wise to get something from the menu, it’s a simple menu but good nonetheless. I actually prefer that a place keeps it simple as opposed to having too many options, but there’s enough choice to please everyone. It was a no-brainer to go for the Trooper Burger - double 4oz patty, double cheese, turkey bacon, onions and their signature sauce; and I upgraded to fries to Fries of the Beast which are mix cheese loaded fries topped with caramelised onions, chopped spring onions and juicy chunks of beef! Went down a treat! I have definitely added this to my “Must Visit London Pubs” list and whether you’re a Maiden fan or not, it’s a great boozer. Not forgetting the underground music venue. So if live rock music is your thing, this is the perfect pub for that iconic nostalgia, let your hair metal down and have a great time.
