Where to begin? As you enter DeGusto, you will be struck by it's eclectic decor and cosy atmosphere. A mix of modern neon signage, stripy painted walls, exposed brick, upcycled wine bottles... Eclectic!
Once we had been sat down, the waiter came along to take our drinks order and he seemed to be very knowledgeable about the wines. We eventually decided to go for a rose (I am not an expert on wines so couldn't say much more than that!), which nicely complimented a truly delectable meal...
Now, the food. There was not a dish we ordered that wasn't packed with flavour, cooked perfectly and expertly presented. For starters we had the Formaggio Fritto (fried cheese) and the Seared Scallops (scallops that are seared). Look, I have eaten a lot of fried cheese in my life and this was particularly good fried cheese. Really crispy coating and the manchego inside was flavoursome and stringy. But, holy moly mamma mia, those scallops... Those scallops were something else. Maybe it's the fact that I'd never had scallops before but I don't think any scallops will ever stand up against these. Served in a nice metal dish in a bed of parsley potato puree with crispy pancetta on top, the flavours and textures were in pure harmony. I cannot stress how flipping good these scallops are.
For mains, we had the Spaghetti Clams & Mussels and Truffle Chitarra. My dish was the truffles, the first time I have ever ordered a dish where truffles were the star of the show. As you can probably tell from my star-rating, it was yet another hit. The pasta was cooked al dente and the truffle sauce coated the chitarra like metal shavings to a magnet. Each bite was rich with truffle flavour, but not overwhelming. I tried the Spaghetti Clams & Mussels which was just as delicious and fresh as you'd expect. Both dishes were excellent and paired wonderfully with our wine.
We didn't order dessert but we ordered a couple of espressos. This was the only place where we were slightly let down as the coffee machine was broken down. That said, I wouldn't let a mechanical failure mar my experience at DeGusto considering what a fantastic experience I'd had.
Overall, DeGusto gets a big fat 5 STARS⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐! Will definitely be coming here again!!!
Edit: I would have added photos but the food was so appetising and delicious that delaying my consumption was...
Read moreDelicious food, terrible access.
It is a shame because the food is so incredible. Since there was no access information noted anywhere on their website, my friend called ahead to ask about wheelchair access and they confirmed that it was on the ground floor but that the bathroom was down stairs in the basement. I accepted that that would be fine and arrived in my chair. But when I arrived, there was a large step up to the door which we had not been told about. I assumed therefore they would have a proper portable ramp but instead the waiter went into the kitchen and came back with what looked like a wooden cupboard door and then stood back, assuming I could somehow propel up a sharp 45 degree board which clearly wasn't even wide enough for my front casters. He then went and got a second random plank of wood. In the end my friend and him basically had to lift me and my chair over the threshold.
They said they had only been open for a few months and this way why they didn't have a ramp, but honestly this should be something you always consider before you ever open. Please get a genuine and safe ramp asap that meets accessibility standards, get a detailed access audit of your establishment done by a professional and clearly provide access information on your website.
It seems ridiculous to say, but in 2022 wheelchair users and disabled people do actually deserve the right to do things like enter restaurants and exist in public life. But when faced with unnecessary exclusionary barriers such as this it strongly suggests that we are...
Read moreCamden Town best kept secret - for now! It won’t be long until this place becomes extremely popular ; for two reasons - 1. Mimi the server is superb at her job, she is calm, attentive and extremely professional, she has an energy that makes you feel like at home and makes you want to stay long after you’ve finished your meal. 2. It goes without saying that the food is INCREDIBLE! A very straight forward menus with something for everyone who is willing to try something unique. It is not your standard everyday spaghetti 🍝 or lasagna restaurant, you won’t find any carbonara here, if you want that kind of food you need to go elsewhere.
Location also gets marks because this is a quiet hidden gem away from the crowds and noise, the restaurant from the outside seems fairly ordinary, but it’s not until you walk ; you get a quaint little restaurant with a few tables, It is quiet, intimate, entirely casual feel aesthetically yet at the same time you feel like you’re in a fine dining restaurant.
You will be a fool not to go and try Italian food that comes from the heart of Italy 🇮🇹
We have nothing bad to say about the experience we had and the pricing is also very reasonable, cheap eat that delivers a party to your mouth! You won’t walk away hungry!
Try it!
Thanks to the chef and Mimi for a great last night experience...
