I had heard a lot of hype about this place... and boy, does it live up to the hype! Gloriously so.
I am often incredibly hard to impress with desserts, but I could not put this down. Every single part of it was delectable! I was legit shocked. There are a lot of fancy dessert shops doing a lot of fancy insta-worthy things, and this is especially true of stalls in famous markets. Humble Crumble, however, is the real deal.
Firstly, organization? Top notch. The ordering process is so streamlined and simple. You wait in the queue, read the small menu and decide. Then go up to one of many iPads to input your order and pay, then wait for your name to be called. Simple, efficient, easy.
The staff are constantly busy. They do not pause. It's just order after order, with skill.
Then there's the crumble. I decided to go all in. If it was my only chance to try it, I wasn't going to play it safe or cheap. And yes, in total I may have paid £9 for a crumble in a crowded tourist trap market but it was worth every delicious cent.
Knowing I was going to get a lot of sweet toppings, I opted for raspberry and rhubarb filling to bring some sour notes in, then got the classic shortbread crumble (and you can decide the ratio. I opted to go heavier on the crumble over the filling). Then toasted marshmallow, clotted cream, frozen custard, meringue, and rose petals.
Not a single mistake was made in my choices. They all work seamlessly together. The combo is fantastic, and surprisingly, it wasn't overly sweet. I was expecting it to be a bit much, but the cream, crumble, and filling nicely complimented the marshmallow and meringue, and the frozen custard was a very good balance of creamy and sweet.
Now, normally, I'm not the biggest fan of fruit fillings. They're more of a means to an end (a reason to eat the shortbread and toppings). But here? It is absolutely essential to the entire dish. I couldn't believe how enjoyable the raspberry and rhubarb was. I was digging down to get at it! A first for me.
Love each part of it.
And I ordered a hot custard to go, which I ate later with some fresh strawberries and scones and, maybe it's cos in the past few years I've only had supermarket custard from a tin, it is honestly the best custard I've had.
Delicious, delicious. I have zero regrets and would eat this every day if I could afford it and not get in trouble by doctors...
Read moreCame here yesterday and really wanted to enjoy my crumble given the reviews I've read and hype about this place online I think got my hopes up it definitely is overrated way too much for what it is by stupid OTT influencers I chose the mixed berry crumble and it looked great to start with, I didn't have to wait long- ordered on the touchscreen (I guess that's the only way to get your order taken these days!) Shame it's card only I had to make sure no one was watching me do the transaction as tourists hover around the card machines you have to be so careful and I hate that everything is turning into a cashless society Took less than 10 mins and I tried to find somewhere to sit and enjoy it away from the crowds, smells and pigeons The custard was lukewarm I should have asked them for it to be scalding hot (how I like it and the only acceptable way to eat crumble!) The crumble was a scarce amount hidden under the custard and then I had tons of berries must have been a bagful tipped in so not enough crumble the pieces I did have were hard had to be mindful when I ate it so I didnt break a tooth I prefer crumble to be a soft texture not chew on rock hard bits The custard wasn't much either it was filling but Ieft most of what was left as the berries were too much the portion looks decent sized until you discover you don't get much crumble or custard for £8.50! Just not how I imagined it to be from the many videos I've seen my experience fell flat so word of advice if you do come here don't get your hopes up like I did The staff were friendly and work hard but the food itself is a hit or miss and for me it was a miss Wouldn't hype it up its only a dessert after all not out of this world not sure if I would recommend as I'm not the influencer type Wouldn't have paid more than what...
Read moreI love humble crumble and always go to my local one in Spitalfields. I came to Borough today (20 Nov) at around 11:30am and I received bad service. Usually in Spitalfields there are free toppings you can add on the side (just small stuff like dried roses, etc). I thought it would be the same in Borough given that all the same toppings were on the side of where you collect your order.
I was right in front of a worker while I was scooping out extra toppings (which were right in front of me by the way, i didn’t need to reach far) she didn’t say anything. As i scoop my next toppings she immediately tells me off with a rude tone and told me that I was not allowed to do that and that I should just take my crumble already. And as i apologised nicely, i also mentioned that in Spitalfields they have a different system and I was allowed to get toppings or request for them in that location. She then tells me, again very rudely, that it was the same across all branches—which i don’t believe is true because I was just at the Spitalfields location recently.
I don’t mind not getting any toppings if I was told off nicely but the server was so rude and seemed entitled. I would not go to this branch again. Borough team should learn from Spitalfields. They are warm...
