I recently revisited Humle Crumble in Shoreditch Spitalfields Market with my friend and sister to try the crumble of the month which was the Blueberry, blackberry and cherry compote with lemon curd and torched meringue topping… super excited to try and have the experience as in the past… as we approached the line was long which is an obvious good sign it is after all the best crumble in London Town 🇬🇧
After queuing and ordering using the iPad, we stood by the mirror and waited for our crumble watching as it was being made. Now I'm not usually one to write a negative review but this is where my excitement depleted as I watched the crumble artist assemble the crumble I couldn't help but think it was being slapped together carelessly... And I say this because in my very first experience (before it became super busy and tech-savvy) I remember feeling really happy with how the crumble was assembled and the personalisation/ friendliness and passion of the crumble artist that served me which in turn made my overall experience much more pleasurable but also my crumble tasted like it was made with love… sounds cheesy but as a passionate home cook/baker myself I have always said that the best tasting food is always made with love and passion. So going back to my recent experience I couldn't help but say to my friend that I felt like it was just being slapped together and felt disappointed with the service received… now I understand that being a busy business means that these things may become rushed but given that the popularity of ‘Humble Crumble’ began in such a humble place and with such care for the customer it was a shame to see and to have experienced this... I had an idea of what it would look like and what it would taste like and the presentation was ever so slightly disappointing not just for my crumble but my sister who had asked for the classic with cold custard and for the custard to be dolloped on felt like being in primary school and having lumpy mash slapped onto the plate.
For me, this was really disappointing and left me feeling disheartened where I repeatedly said to my friend that since the growth this has been my worst experience yet, and that I would be likely to try the recipes at home instead of travelling into London to have a negative experience. The crumble itself was very tasty, however a little sweet for our liking and we noticed that with some frozen custard or normal custard it took away that overly sweet taste and toned it down and we would have liked to have had the option to add this to the crumble itself as apposed to ordering separate portion. I am hoping that this is a one-off and that my next review will be far more positive particularly regarding the service and apologise if it upsets anyone however felt it necessary to share my experience to avoid disappointment or overly high expectations.
As shown on the video the meringue was half-torched unlike how it was shown on social media/ my...
Read moreI had the pleasure of visiting Humble Crumble twice, and my experiences were quite contrasting. The first visit was simply fantastic - everything was on point! However, during my second visit, there were some issues. The staff seemed busy, and my request for hot custard wasn’t fulfilled; instead, I received warm/cold custard. To make matters worse, they prepared my hot custard first, causing it custard to go cold and develop a skim with lumps. It felt like a different experience compared to my first visit. Hopefully, the staff consistency improves, as their crumble truly is amazing.
HOWEVER…. The self-service option at Humble Crumble truly enhances the ordering process. It’s convenient and easy to use, allowing you to customize your order just the way you like it. The simplicity and efficiency of their system make it a breeze to navigate.
Now, let’s talk about the flavors. The Apple and Cinnamon crumble at Humble Crumble is simply incredible. The harmonious blend of the sweet apple and aromatic cinnamon creates a taste sensation that lingers long after each bite. I'm appalled by how awful the crumble here is as Humble Crumble has increased in popularity. I had the November special and it was awful tasted like sand, and the custard was watery! What's worse is i sent an email to customer services demanding a refund and they've ignored me.
This is my 2nd visit to Humble Crumble, the crumble here is absolutely delicious, the real deal fresh and hot made with fresh milk and cream. I ventured here this time because I wanted to try the Salted Caramel & Pecan Crumble (which was amazing). Please consider keeping it as a regular addition. Whilst the crumble was delicious I'm disappointed because I specified more crumble than apple and I got about 50/50 and very little custard. A member of staff told me I couldn't have a refill on the salted caramel custard even though on IG it clearly said you could get a refill even though its a special. So very contradicting, if I had known that I wouldn't have bothered buying a large for £8.50.
I want to add that the staff is absolutely miserable whenever I go, they never smile or at least say thank you, it puts me right off each time. When I looked up their salary they are getting 27k a year as a starting salary for full time, which is more than minimum wage yet couldn't be bothered to provide basic customer service. Please retrain your staff, as someone who works in hospitality it is very unprofessional, and may I add the queue wasn't even long or anything despite visiting around lunchtime so I don't understand the sulking or...
