This is a really tricky review that can be summarised as DONT GET THE BURGERS! There is a lot that's good about this place, but I can't give it more than 2 stars due to the above. First the good - the place has a nice atmosphere, looks like it can get a bit cramped on some tables but ours was fine. The music was the right level for me and definitely not too loud. I'd say service is good but not great - we were served pretty quickly and politely but could have used checking up on. For drinks, I quite like Kozel beer, but what was very strange is that they serve gin but not tonic apparently! In terms of food. We had a chicken dish and the sloppy Joe hummus to share for starters. The chicken was ok. I really liked the hummus but could have done with a bit (a lot) more bread. Now the real issue - the burgers. In 2020 you cannot get away with the poor quality of what we were served. The falafel burger - it was very dry, bland and with a quite frankly silly bun to falafel ratio. If the promised tahini and chilli sauce was in there I failed to find it. Bitterly disappointing for someone who'd recently sampled the delights of Tel Aviv.... The other diner goes to kosher restaurants much more often than me, he had some type of beef burger. To say he was unimpressed would be an understatement. Small patty, a bun that was far too big for it....he ended up asking for any sauce he could add to it..... Overall - it seemed like a nice place but for some reason our burgers were terrible, maybe the rest of the main courses are higher quality? I might go back and give it another try, my kosher companion isn't...
Read moreYesterday evening at my son's request we went to Hummus Bar to celebrate his graduation results.
We arrived on time at 20:30 hours, which is not late by restaurant standards, but still we felt that the meal was being rushed.
The manager started calling last orders from the kitchen at 21:15 hours, which was odd because we were not told this either when I booked or when we sat down.
Our food was okay, although the mashed potato we ordered had clearly been sitting for a while as it arrived with a film on it but it was fine to eat.
The highlight of the evening came about 15 minutes after the call for last orders when the manager started putting the chairs on the table, whilst there were still three tables of diners in the restaurant.
This completely spoilt the evening for us. It undid all the hard work that our efficient, polite and attentive waiter had done, so much so that I considered deducting the automatically added tip from the bill. I didn't as I did not see why the waiter should suffer for the managers rudeness.
When I pointed out to the manager that what he was doing was the height of rudeness, so far as restaurant etiquette is concerned, he just stood there speechless.
Needless to say, we won't be returning to this restaurant any time soon.
I have had no pleasure in writing this...
Read moreFood was great, but, Service was hit and miss, asked for charif to go with starter 6 times till the tiniest bowl of charif arrived. Asked for charif for main course 7 times. Waiter said yes again and again but kept on disappearing behind the counter to pack deliveroo orders and ignored us, same when I asked for a spoon to share the rice with main course, asked 2 waiters a total of 9 times till it arrived. And the rice was of course cold by then. The table felt sticky, although cleaned in front of us. When we tried to pay the bill he said he is bringing the credit card machine but went right to the back of the restaurant to do stuff. And forgot to take payment. Waiter removed the starter plates and asked us to leave the used knife and forks for main course, obviously we were not going to rest our used cutlery on the table. Strange and disjointed service but the food was exceptional. Pity they can't seem to get the basics in service right.
Seeing as the bill for the 6 of us was £200 the service should have been better and clean cutlery should be provided for the main course.
But would still go again due to the quality of the food.
Maybe I will order my charif a week in advance and bring my...
