It was the worst roast dinner I've ever had. I went with two other friends, and we all ordered the roast pork. They told us it would be 45 minutes to wait for our food, and as we were in no hurry, we settled down in the beer garden with a drink to wait for our dinner. We were so looking forward to our Sunday roast. But when the food came, it was cold. It was not just a little bit warm, it was really cold. The potatoes had only been boiled, not roasted. There were a few tiny hrey baby carrots, a tiny bit of soggy cabbage, cold gravy, and barely enough. The menu said it came with cauliflower cheese, but this was missing, and the Yorkshire puddings were burnt. Mine was like a stone. It actually bounced off the plate when I tried to cut it. And it was a very small piece of pork. We went back to the bar to ask that they reheated our food, and for more gravy, we also asked about the missing cauliflower cheese. The waitress got angry and was quite short and impatient, and said we would have to pay extra for the gravy. The chap behind the bar who took our order said it wasn't his fault and that he had told us about there being no cauliflower cheese, but he hadn't. I asked the waitress why she was angry, and she said she was actually having a really nice day and she was in a really good mood that day. Totally atrocious service. Eventually, they said they would warm up our food and bring more gravy. When they brought the plates back, the food was still cold. They had not warmed it up at all, at least not mine. They added a few soggy chips to make up for the missing cauliflower cheese. It was inedible. We were so hungry by then that we had the only thing that was edible, which was the tiny portion of roast pork. At least it wasn't burnt to a crisp. We left the rest. Don't bother wasting your money here. Much better food and service...
Read moreI dedicated a day to coming out to explore the small town of Greenwich. They have a beautiful boat out there, a huge university, and the time observatory where they outline exactly where the Prime Meridian of the world is. Very cool stuff.
In the midst of the full day, we needed some lunch, so we decided to check out one of the many pubs we passed on our walks about town. The internet guided me to the Kings Arms, and I'm glad it did. The vibe inside was old-school pub from the 1890's, with a modern twist.
I had the BBQ Chicken (Wrapped in Ayshire dry-cured smoked bacon with East Coast IPA BBQ onion chutney, beer cheese, crispy prosciutto, slaw, triple-cooked chips). This was a very nice dish. The chicken was super moist and juicy. It was surrounded by fatty pork. And the deep ale-flavored BBQ chutney just tied it all together, and left a lot for you to dip your chips in. Huge fan.
I also had the chance to try the Steak & Ale Pie (Award-winning steak & Ruddles Ale pie served with a charred wedge of Hispi cabbage, Merlot beef dripping gravy and your choice of buttered mash or triple-cooked chips). The pies in this country, were Amazing. The pastry was just so hearty and crisp and was able to absorb such a great amount of the sauce within, but while avoiding the dreaded soggy bottom, of course.
The charred wedge of cabbage, I didn't understand. Maybe it's a British thing, but I was not a fan. Sorry.
Overall, this was exactly the experience I was looking for in London. A great atmosphere with great food in a small town pub. Even though I could tell it was crawling with fellow tourists, it was still a...
Read moreIt was hot and we wanted to go somewhere with an outside space - wow! What a lovely little pub in the centre of Greenwich. The beer garden is really pretty with strung festoon lights and lots of seating and quite intimate, but not cramped. Think 'Secret Garden' vibes. The only downside with outdoor spaces is that not everyone is a smoker and we were sat eating next to a table of smokers who clearly did not consider anyone other than themselves - including my two children. The entire footprint should be no-smoking if food is being offered.
The pub is immaculately clean - spotless - and beautifully decorated. Enough theme but not gimmicky.
There were two front of house staff on - Maclaren and Jana and the chef, Taylor. It was quite a busy late Sunday afternoon. They had clearly been rushed off their feet all day and yet we were greeted with big smiles and a warm welcome, as was everyone else that came in behind me. Maclaren was also very pregnant and yet she zipped about confidently offering the best customer service I have experienced in a very long time. She is a star employee and great ambassador for the brand.
The food was slow coming because only one chef was on, but we were warned of this BEFORE we ordered so it was our decision to stay put. And so glad we did. The food was excellent value and Taylor did a great job on their own in the kitchen.
I forgot to mention they are super doggy friendly.
All in all, our new favourite little gem in the centre...
