During our first trip to Greenwich in an absolute age (we’re only down the road in Bromley), wandering around the streets and market, we found ourselves peckish and thought be good to try something a bit different. Looking through the window, Japes is deceptively small and a bit lacking in the seating – a swift Google search for the establishment quickly indicated this was not the case, and indeed, being escorted past the kitchen found ourselves in a very pleasant, light and cool part of the restaurant with a large skylight and also a separate courtyard right at the back.
Settled in we picked up the simple and efficient menus, and ears picked up with the pleasant sound of the Velvet Underground on the PA. This was a promising start, and indeed, the eclectic music selection curated by whichever cultural wizened person was in charge, was amongst the best I’ve ever heard in a public space. It was followed by a bit more Lou Reed (with John Cale), Townes van Sant, Lana Del Rey covering John Denver, Tim Buckley, a very deepcut Mark Lanegan with Isobel Campbell song, and a myriad of other delights from a whole variety, albeit gravitating slightly to seventies era rock / country / folk. And in 2025!
Missus went with the Vegan, and I went with the veggie Mediterranean. Both served the ‘London’ way. And my goodness, they were both excellent. Mine was super stretchy cheesy, and the way they’re made is very unique. Effectively no crust round the edge (wall to wall toppings), thick and fluffy, hot cheese, tasty toppings…. Couldn’t finish it, but I’m looking forward to heating it up later and having it front of the telly.
Pricing was I think broadly on par with Pizza Express, but the quality of the pizza itself was heads and shoulders above. To be honest, wouldn’t even consider them rivals, as it was so unique in both taste, style and presentation. However, two pizzas, glass of wine and a craft beer came to about fifty quid plus tip. Pretty good value, I thought!
The only thing we thought a bit odd is that it wasn’t rammed. Indeed, arriving at between 12.30 and 1pm on a Sunday, we literally had the place to ourselves. The vibe, music, lovely and attendant staff (and of course the food) meant that being in an otherwise empty restaurant wasn’t an issue, just surprised because of how good it was. Maybe there was a big football match, or in fairness, probably more an evening joint. Will definitely try it one evening in future (why there’s no direct bus between our respective locations I have no idea).
So, in conclusion, fantastic pizza, great service, and comfortable space, elevated by the immaculate music selection (I know it shouldn’t matter much, but it was really great and perfectly...

Visited Tuesday January 17th. We very nearly gave it a miss as we'd had a very underwhelming experience in their Soho branch but as it was fairly new opening and local we thought we'd give it a go and we're glad we did. For the scores....
Look and Feel 8/10 - Looked great, good seating area, nicely decorated, cool neon on the wall. Great music and although we couldn't see, it has an outside area which I can imagine will make a killing during a sunny Greenwich summer! Was a little bit cold, but it was very cold outside and the restaurant was quiet so extremely hard to keep warm. They did bring a heater out half way though our visit so they were aware and it did make a difference.
The Service 9.5/10 - This was the highlight of our visit and Louie, the guy that served us the whole time really was really fantastic! Helpful, friendly, informative, chatty. All of this without being in any way pushy/annoying. A real credit to the restaurant
The Food 8.5/10 - Everything was really good and we really enjoyed every dish. Pizza itself was really nice. One of those dishes when you just know all of the ingredients are good quality. The salad was tasty and the chip/fries/wedges things we're great, never had them before but they were 👍🏼
Overall Experience 9.5/10 - we left there really pleased and happy with the visit and that was because the service was so good and friendly, it just boosted our view of every aspect of our visit. And what made it even more impressive is that it was really quiet and it's a lot harder to create a nice atmosphere when it's quiet. Loved it!
VFM 9.5/10 - The bill came to just over £30 but we gave £40. It was cheaper because Louie gave us a discount due to our previous underwhelming visit to a different branch. We did say it wasn't necessary but he did it anyway which was a lovely gesture.
Final Score 45/50 - Not sure how it could have been any better. Best of luck to this new restaurant but on the evidence of today, they won't need it!
Would we return - Absolutely...and probably...
