Really interesting experience but quite a mediocre omakase. The chef is a great entertainer. His stories are interesting, he is very approachable and creates a great atmosphere at the restaurant. This is made even more enjoyable by the fact that the restaurant really feels like a family ran business with chefâs family members helping with the service. Unfortunately the food doesnât live up to the standards in my opinion. The rice was quite nicely seasoned although I would prefer it to be slightly warmer. I found the quality of fish and in particular of tuna to be quite low as it was chewy and didnât have enough fat to be called chutoro. The starters seemed a bit blunt in their flavors and lacked the typical Japanese finesse. For example to me having a spicy starter doesnât seem like a good idea as it makes it harder to feel the fine details of flavor in the nigiri. Sushi pieces were of varied quality. I wasnât really impressed with the UK based pieces as I found the fish sourced from outside of the UK to be much better in general. A lot of pieces had caviar on top which to me felt unnecessary as it didnât add much to the flavor of the fish but rather interfered with it. Scallop piece was my favorite from the dinner. I would say that this is a great place if you want to enjoy local chefâs performance and great atmosphere but I wouldnât recommend this restaurant to people looking...
Read moreWhat an incredible experience! Last night me and my fiancĂ© ate 18 of the most delicious morsels that we have ever eaten. From start to finish amazing food that was playful, inventive and contemporary but still grounded by a deep respect for tradition that shows Chrisâs impeccable training. Such a joy to watch him deftly craft the nigiri, all with humour, humility and an understated showmanship. I would recommend having a few more traditional sushi experiences before booking to fully appreciate what Chris and team are doing differently; although that being said everything is so delicious that nobody could leave dissatisfied! SakĂ© and drinks were reasonably priced, another thing that shows off how unpretentious this place is. In fact they seem outright anti-pretentious given food of this standard, in this format, is usually accompanied by starched chefsâ whites, tastefully bland decor and an overpriced wine list. Instead Kurisu Omakase still has the relaxed feel of the family neighbourhood place that it still is at its heart. The meal is still special occasion prices for most people but still such great value for money considering the quality and skill. If I could afford to I would want to eat here at least once a week! ăăĄăăăăŸă§ăă!...
Read moreWent for the Omakase dinner with my partner, and it felt like both dinner and a show while still somehow feeling very relaxed and like this place was quite down to earth. Chris, the chef, is clearly brilliant at what he does. Delightfully complex flavours and a great depth to every dish; Chris sometimes playing with texture and temperature means youâre getting an excellent variety of creativity as well. I loved every dish. My partner is typically not a seafood person (he joins me because I love it), but also found every dish very easy to eat, which in this review might speak for itself.
I particularly enjoyed the deep fried halibut starter in the dashi and bone broth. I was so freaking impressed with the sushi, which was also a great opportunity to try aged fish. Iâm not much of a dessert person and I still loved the dessert. We left feeling full without feeling like we were bursting, and both entertained and satisfied (my partner and I think it may have been the best meal we have ever had together). For me, this meal embodied the perfect balance between substance and spectacle. I want to recommend this place to everyone but also, bookings are already difficult to get. Ah well. Get your butts here!! I know I will certainly want...
