After reading the reviews online my partner decided to bring me here to celebrate my new job.
First impressions were bad, it’s extremely deceptive compared to how it’s pictured on the website, it’s very dark and gloomy, there was no obvious sign outside, especially as we came in the dark so we drove past it twice. The sign outside could do with some light decor.
Prior to coming to Mango Room my partner called to book the table and informed them of my new job celebration and had asked the waitress if she could make the table look somewhat fancy/different to the other tables as a surprise for me in which she agreed to doing. When we arrived he asked her where the table was and she said “pick whatever table you want” meaning she completely disregarded his request.
After receiving the menu that was broken and looked extremely cheap and flimsy for the prices they charge, I also realised the food was very overpriced. I asked the waitress for the set menu and she said that only gets provided for groups of people over 10. It didn’t state that on the website and can be misconstrued as false advertisement.
I can not believe for one small portioned size jerk chicken it cost £13 - alone - you then have to pay extra for a side which is around 3.50-4.00.
When reluctantly ordering the food which was Jerk chicken rice & peas, we also requested coleslaw and dumplings, the waitress replied “we don’t do coleslaw or dumplings here, the owner doesn’t like it” ... it’s not about what the owner doesn’t like it’s about your food audience. How can you run a Caribbean restaurant without coleslaw or dumplings? It’s key in West Indian food. I found that to be very obscured. The waitress then said “it’s fine dining, we don’t do that here”... I did not know consuming dumplings and coleslaw meant it was not fine dining.
Whilst waiting for my food, I asked for some water & the waitress brought out a jug of water which seemed to have a booger stain on the side, very very off putting.
When the food eventually came out in which waiting time wasn’t long because the restaurant wasn’t busy, the plates were extremely hot, it seemed as though the chef just reheated/microwaved the rice and peas causing the dish within itself to be piping hot to the point where I couldn’t even hold it and had to messily dish out the rice myself with the small spoon provided.
The rice and peas were extremely overcooked and stodgy, there was hardly any gravy with the jerk chicken. The jerk chicken was undercooked, had no flavour whatsoever and did not fall of the bone with basic sweet pepper slice and red onions for decoration. The plantain was extremely undercooked, very burnt on the outside and tasted wet, clumpy and soggy on the inside - I’ve never tasted plantain so renk.
The waitress did give us complimentary tulip glasses of champagne, which was nice.
My partner did say that he enjoyed his curry goat which was very tender, he had that with plain rice.
Overall I feel this restaurant is extremely overrated, extortionate and wouldn’t recommend this to anyone.
The only pros were the company I had and leaving.
I would’ve much preferred going turtle bay, the atmosphere and decor is so much better and you get your monies worth. Turtle Bay is extremely commercial so this is a huge compliment to them as I’m not too fond of...
Read moreVisited mango room yesterday in celebration of my cousin's graduation and I cannot describe how awful my experience was.
We were given a set menu which had numerous options and I was quite pleased reviewing it and saw there was a wide range of dishes to choose from.
I chose, cod fritters for my starter and the "Camden famous curry goat" as my main. I was served 2 minuscule fritters and a very wilted salad in the middle as a garnish. Absolutely awful. I come from a creole background and our cuisine is very close, if not identical to Caribbean; so I know how these dishes should taste. The fritters were about 1% fish, 99% dough and 0% flavour. Extremely disappointing.
My main of curry goat was served in a bowl, the rice and plaintain served in seperate bowls to share amongst the table of 20. Curry goat is not made to be served in a bowl like soup which you then add rice to... You put your curry on the rice not the other way round. I can understand the contemporary twist they tried to add but a seperate plate should have been provided so we could eat it properly.
Further to that, I have gone home and be woken up out of my sleep to throw up as I have now contracted food poisoning. The goat meat was clearly not fresh, I could taste the grainy texture from the meat as I was eating and again, the flavour was 0% swimming in a pool of gravy (NOT THE WAY CURRY GOAT SHOULD BE SERVED).
To say I am disappointed with my experience would be an understatement.
I should have known when we had a booking for 8pm on a Friday night and when I walked in, the restaurant was unexpectedly empty.
If you are after authentic Caribbean cuisine DO NOT VISIT HERE. Awful service! And one of the bar maids is not even allowed to serve alcohol although she is clearly of age, she said this was due to the owner/management saying she is not appropriately trained to do so.
Absolute bullocks.
Wish I had taken on the American tradition of not paying for a service and meal when it's crap.
I will be heavily advising my peers to NEVER visit here.
Thanks but no...
Read moreWent to the Mango Rooms Restaurant to celebrate my brothers birthday. (2nd July) The worst service I have ever encountered from any restaurant. Trouble from the onset starting with not knowing of the booking after someone had already called my brother to confirm it.(apparently it seems it was confirmed under someone else's name) don't ask me how that is even possible the mind boggles. Next messed up orders, ask for rose got red, plus drinks not coming together one by one service, but still got it wrong, then after I thought they had manage to clench it out comes rose wine again. Nobody knew what they were doing including the so called manager. The food for me wasn't bad but then I can cook and can do just as well myself. When I first went to this restaurant it was good and had good potential now I'm afraid if they don't pull their socks up pronto the will soon be out of business. How can you run a Caribbean restaurant with not one caribbean person serving in site not even the welcoming hostess all of which whose first language in very apparently not English. Is it cheap pay, well it certainly will cost you, the service in there was simply deplorable I certainly will not be making a comeback there nor shall i recommend it those star ratings that have been acquired certainly now need to be removed.
P s don't pull any race card on this comment if they had all been West Indians serving in there with that service last night I would be even more scathing with my remarks if that is at...
