In summary: I have just experienced my worst ever restaurant experience in my whole life. The food is ok, I like their ramen but it's not authentic, and the place is actually a Chinese restaurant specialising in Japanese food. The prices just went up, so with the auto added discretionary charge, a ramen comes out at about £17.
Having said that, the guy that runs this place is incredibly rude and after tonight was borderline threatening with how aggressive he was over a laughably small disagreement. He really shouldn't be working front of house, and could even do with hiring a better trained front of house staff.
They have recently redone their menu and now have a second menu which they only give when requested, it has more pan Asian dishes. I asked for it once a few weeks ago but never ordered from it. Tonight I did not even have the menu handed to me, I only had the Japanese menu handed. In the new menu, the special spicy ramen has okra, it never used to have okra. I don't like okra.
I'm a repeat customer and have brought a fair few new customers to this place because I like their spicy special ramen. One of the last visits we were having a discussion with the owner and he said the soup base of the special spicy ramen is a laksa base. Fast forward to today, I literally only ever order the special ramen to the point where he's joked about it multiple times and tried to get me to buy something else. I asked for the 'laksa ramen'. I asked him if the new menu spicy ramen has okra, he said yes, so i said to not include the okra.
He brought it out and after a few minutes I noticed it's got seafood in it which is abnormal, I actually thought he was adding it as a nice gesture given I've been there a dozen or so times, until I noticed there's no pork. So I casually asked him over thinking they've substituted the pork and forget to say, I simply asked 'should there be pork in this', his reaction was instantly so over the top and aggressive. His whole argument was 'when have I ever served pork with laksa', I was a bit confused because every single time I've ordered the spicy ramen it came with pork. So he ran to the back, got the second menu out which I've hadn't even seen, and said 'you ordered this' and pointed to a laksa soup dish. I realised now where the miscommunication happened, but also was confused because he knows I never order anything except the spicy dish, and that I specifically asked their not to be any okra in the dish which I think is only in the spicy ramen.
He got very irate over nothing and I was trying hard to calm him down, it's like he jump started into a very heated argument with none of the build up, my partner thought he was putting on a kind of show and was laughing, not understanding that he's actually serious, I asked him not to get so angry, it got so heated I felt uncomfortable and frankly unsafe. I tried to calmly explain that I thought I ordered the laksa 'spicy special' ramen and he thought I ordered the laksa soup which is in a menu they don't hand out, so i tried to end it there and he hastely asks what i want to do about it. I laughed and said nothing, I'll happily eat it and pay, the question from the start was whether there should be pork. Now the half full restaurant has gone silent and aware of this drama, as he walks to the back he shouts 'you asking too many questions, no want then don't come!'.
Suffice to say, I clearly got him on a bad day but that is no excuse for how aggressive he became, I lost my appetite and couldn't eat anymore because I was stressed out and my partner felt very uneasy and wanted to leave. I asked the lady to pack it up so we can pay. She came back and said 'my boss won't let you take it away, we will only charge for the other dish'. Alright.. What a totally bizarre exchange with a repeat customer.
Work on your attitude. This is not how you treat your paying customers, and after looking at a few of your recent reviews, I'm hardly the first person to come across such unwelcome and unacceptable behaviour. Get into another business if you...
Read moreOverall it was pretty good however it’s a bit too pricey for me. The sushi rolls menu variations are alright, definitely would love to get more choice. The service was polite but there was only 1 lady who’s taking order, clean, and serve.
The downside when came here was that they took really long for the dishes to come out and we were the only dine in customer when we went there. They took about 20 mins to prepare our food. However, I think if you order the ramen the service will be faster because just when our 1st sushi roll came another customer came in and order the ramen, and their ramen came before we even finish our 1st sushi roll and 2nd sushi roll haven’t even come yet.
Another thing I want to mention is their drinking cup quite stink, we ordered tap water and both of our cups smells fishy.
We ordered 3 signature rolls (8pcs each roll) Here’s my review on the sushi.
Sasa Roll £16.50 (soft shell crab sushi). I personally love love love this one because of the crunchy soft shell crab inside.
Unagi Sushi Roll £16.80. I’m not a big fan of unagi because of the small bones they always have in their meat but my friend wanted to try unagi so we ordered it. I think if they put/brush more of the unagi sauce it would be better.
Kazan Sushi £15.80. This sushi is the most unique ones out of all because they serve it with this mayo cheese under the sushi. They also blow torch the mayo cheese sauce which creates this...
Read moreAverage food, nothing remarkable, Hare and Tortoise and Eat Tokyo are steps above. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento, which included wakame salad, salmon sashimi, chicken teriyaki, rice and miso soup (for takeaway, not that it matters to the food quality).
TLDR; Hare and Tortoise and Eat Tokyo offers higher quality food at lower price points with BIGGER portions.
My thoughts on each component of the bento: Teriyaki chicken: Average, a bit hard. Hare and tortoise's chicken teriyaki is a league above. Rice: dissapointing, its not even japanese short grain rice... Sashimi: nothing remarkable Wakame salad and miso soup: nothing remarkable PORTION SIZE: I would describe it as small compared to Hare and Tortoise and Eat Tokyo, I'm not full after eating the entire thing (I usually eat more than the average person). Price: for 12 pounds its extremely dissapointing, not only is the food not as tasty, its more expensive than competitors with its smaller portion size (sub 10 pounds at the competitors I listed).
Sorry, but I would rather pay to travel 30 minutes across london to eat at Hare and Tortoise than to...
