We visited Ranya on the back of its excellent Google reviews and they're pretty bang on in this case. Such is the power of the internet! We didn't make a booking but were luckily found a table despite the restaurant being busy with customers who clearly know their way round Iraqi cuisine. As you might expect the menu is meat heavy with a lot of grilled chicken and lamb in various guises along with some tempting vegetable side dishes. You can even go for the lamb head if you so desire although I'm not sure if that's a special order. What you will receive, without asking, is a tasty bowl of lentil soup and as much flat bread and houmous as you can stomach. You have to be careful to leave enough room for your actual meal because the bread is so thin, light and fresh. It is lovely. On top of this we ordered grilled lamb ribs and a tasty looking chicken dish which came with baked beans and aubergine stew as side dishes. The meat itself was excellent, being both tender and bountiful, with everything else adding to the tasty package. The staff themselves were friendly and helpful if perhaps a little overloaded in responding to requests. It's worth noting that the restaurant doesn't serve alcohol but there's a reasonable range of soft drinks including fresh juices. All in all Ranya is a good place to visit if you're looking for a fresh and filling dinner.

I’ve been dining at Ranya for many years, and they’ve never once slipped in either quality or service. The food is consistently rich in flavour and comfort, truly one of the heartiest meals you can find. Every visit begins with a generous offering of complimentary lentil soup, bread, and hummus. The lentil soup, in particular, remains the best I’ve ever had. On this visit, we ordered the dolma and the lamb shank, both exactly as I remembered them: absolutely delicious. The lamb was tender, perfectly cooked, and fell effortlessly off the bone. The portion sizes here are massive and beyond worth the price. The staff are always warm, friendly, and attentive. Ranya has been one of my favorite restaurants for years, and I have no doubt it will remain so for many more to come.

Very friendly service, not licensed. Lots of choices for soft drinks, and all reasonably priced. We ordered two starters, bread, two main courses. The potion is very generous. Compare to other restaurants, I found taste less salty, and honest home cooking. Not oilly either. So although I ate far too much, I felt I had a healthy meal ! Which is very good. To be honest, it was my first Curdish food. I had other middle Eastern food before, and suppose they are all similar but different in many ways. They gave us small potion of soup to start with, and that was great taste! And also small sweets with tea. Recommend.

In response to your reply to Shahab and Mebs review:

Children at the Back: Children gathered at the back because they had just used the restroom and were naturally intrigued by the fish tank. It's only expected that children would be drawn to such an attraction. I understand the concern for safety, but I must point out that Reuben's approach to addressing this was rather hasty. He raised his voice and instructed the kids to move before I could even intervene. I encourage you to review the CCTV footage closely to fully grasp the situation.

Restaurant Atmosphere: While it's true that a dinner voluntarily relocated to accommodate us, no other customers left or changed tables due to our group.

Child's Distress: It's unfortunate that your account portrays a lack of care on our part. When the child became upset, one of the parents promptly ordered food to address his hunger, while the other parent tried to comfort him. Eventually, the father took the child outside to soothe him. This incident, though challenging, was managed responsibly and attentively.

Lady Interaction: It appears there might have been a lapse in your manager's recollection of events. I was seated at one of the table for six, and I initially ordered your mix grill of 12 skewers for approximately £69. Oddly, before I could even proceed with further ordering, he immediately mentioned the need to check the meat availability for such a quantity of kebabs. This approach struck me as peculiar, especially since he had suggested ordering the kebabs separately. He also persisted in recommending kids' menu options for each child, a suggestion I respectfully declined. Instead, I proceeded with the order of 12 skewers, a decision that Rueben appeared displeased with. Additionally, I ordered two more main meals. In fact, when Rueben expressed dissatisfaction with our order.

The second table of six added two more main dishes and a variety of starters. Altogether, we placed an order equivalent to 10 main meals, along with side orders and starters. In consideration of the meal costs, it's worth highlighting that if each adult had ordered a single main meal, the total would have amounted to £72 (£12 x 6 = £72). Similarly, if all the children had ordered one of the child meals, the total would have equalled £72 (£6 x 12 = £72). Rueben's dissatisfaction with our order led him to become increasingly discourteous. He went so far as to imply that we had not ordered enough food and that he could have profited more by giving our table to other customers. This rude behaviour, witnessed by our entire party, prompted the lady to intervene. This intervening diner, a regular customer of yours for the past six years, merely questioned what our options would be if the children were unable to consume the amount of food suggested. However, Rueben's ongoing rudeness provoked her to point out the inappropriateness of his previous behaviour when he shouted at the children. In an unexpected and offensive response, Rueben then chose to ask her to leave. Let me be clear: there was no bullying or profanity involved in this exchange. I implore you to uphold the principles of honesty and refrain from fabricating stories. It's essential to clarify that this interaction between the lady and Rueben lasted less than a minute before I continued the discussion. Rueben's reaction to a woman's input he openly expressed his astonishment that a woman would be involved. His repetition of this sentiment exemplifies a troubling male chauvinist attitude. Given the unfortunate demeanour displayed by Rueben, we had no inclination to continue dining at your establishment. Consequently, we paid for the child's meal that had been served and promptly departed.

I have spent far too long on this matter especially when a nice day out with family and friends was ruined by your establishment. We have no intention to ever set foot at your establishment again and good luck to any one who attends with a large group...

We attended Monday afternoon and when we got there they had a table of 3 people who were in a heated discussion over politics and religion expressing extreme views which made me feel uncomfortable.

The food was horrible the meat smelt really bad the mix meze was again was really bad considering we go there quite often and it is normally nice this time it was not.

Towards the end of the meal the waitress bought over tea split it on my partner’s brand new bag which I bought for her birthday and went to get products to clean which unfortunately did not help after visiting the dry cleaners and the shop I bought it from on the same day in Kingston both advised this could not be cleaned due to the material and the colour and once cleaned the shape and colour will change.

We then went back to the restaurant the manager came over very aggressively and said he would not a pay a penny and cannot see anything wrong which did not help the situation at all we went back to do ask for their insurance details to claim on it as it was not fair on the waitress to pay for it out of her own pocket he stated they do not have no insurance or public liability insurance which is worrying and another thing he kept saying god gave him eyes and he can’t see anything through out the whole interaction he kept smiling very cocky and did not calm the situation at all also threatened to call the police he also made his own member of staff cry.

Avoid this place at all cost the manager is very rude and as he states they do not have no insurance so if anything happened you will not be able to claim.

We have also made a complain on the alternative dispute resolution for consumers.

Also reading through other reviews Ruben seems to be the problem on how he talks to people and how he degrades women which I assume it is quite normal to him due and yes I am pretty sure you will say you watched the 24 hour cctv and it does not show the member of staff dropping the tea on the bag. Funny enough he refused to check the cctv on the day but he seems mention throughout the other comments.

Ruben I have proof of purchase of the bag and that has a picture on it too.

You never had a queue in fact when we got there you were not even in the shop at the time.

You seem to get confused you treat your members of staff like slave we asked to claim on your insurance you stated you never had any insurance which is strange you then said you don’t care she can pay out of her own pocket which then she cried you made a young girl cry she was never racially abused not a single racial comment was made once again you are falsely accusing people you seem to have a problem with non Kurdish people also you work in hospitality industry people come to spend there hard earned money we do not need you shouting in our face with your spit going everywhere.

You do not have a sign to state that you will not take any responsibility for damages cost by your staff.

I have never queued outside this establishment and never will getting an a formal apology that is never going to happen as you threatened that day to call the police you should of.

You tried to serve me meat that was off and tasted really bad.

You should also reflect on how you talk to people but mainly women as you are very cocky you wouldn’t like it if someone spoke to your mother or wife like that.

As stated I have made a complaint I have evidence of purchase...

I recently had an incredibly disappointing experience at Ranya where I hosted a party of 18 people, including 6 adults and 12 children. Having visited the restaurant on several occasions before, and with a friend who is a regular patron, I was shocked by the way we were treated and compelled to share my experience.

The incident that stands out the most was when a few of the children in our group innocently approached the fish tank. Instead of addressing the situation in a professional manner, the manager, Ruben, resorted to shouting at them. This incident not only frightened the children but also left a sour taste in the mouths of the adults present.

What was even more distressing was Ruben's attitude throughout the entire ordeal. His behavior was nothing short of horrible and disgusting. He exhibited a complete lack of respect and consideration for his customers, which left me deeply unsettled.

Furthermore, I was appalled by how Ruben interacted with women in our party. He spoke down to them and displayed a condescending demeanor that was both offensive and unacceptable. It was clear that his disrespectful behavior extended beyond just our group and was a regular occurrence.

The issues continued when it came to ordering our food. I placed an order for 12 skewers and six other main dishes. However, Ruben continuously berated us, insisting that the quantity of food we ordered was insufficient. This not only made us uncomfortable but also highlighted his blatant disregard for our preferences and his aggressive upselling tactics.

What was meant to be a family-friendly establishment turned out to be anything but that. Ruben's conduct and the overall atmosphere made it evident that this was not a well-run family business, and I fear that his behavior will severely impact the restaurant's reputation.

Adding insult to injury, Ruben audaciously mentioned that if there were 18 adults at the tables, they would have ordered more food. This not only felt disrespectful but also hinted at a level of discrimination based on our group composition.

In my eyes, this restaurant's primary concern seemed to be profits, with little regard for how they treated their customers. The entire experience was marred by this establishment's single-minded focus on monetary gain, rather than providing a positive and respectful environment for its patrons.

Ultimately, the sum of these experiences led me to feel unwelcome and disrespected, almost as if there was an underlying form of racism at play. It's disheartening to think that a place I had previously enjoyed visiting could turn out to be such a disappointment. I sincerely hope that Ranya takes these criticisms to heart and makes significant changes to ensure that future customers do not endure the same terrible encounter that my party...
