I visited Roti king Euston first a few years back due to its popular demand but never visited again because of the petty service. That place was overcrowded and they were in such a hurry to remove the plates from the table even before we finished the food. My husband was still eating the curry and they took the plates in hurry almost spilling it on us. Regardless of the taste of the food that experience wasn't pleasant and we never visited it again.
When Battersea branch of this chain opened we wanted to give this a try. We've been to this place atleast 10 times this year because of the food and the pleasant staff. Their Roti canai with fish curry is really good and so was their curry laksa which unfortunately doesn't have chicken anymore. The service "was" good as well. However, we are definitely not visiting this place again.
I ordered Mee goreng today instead of laksa as laksa curry is not the same anymore and my husband ordered the usual roti canai with fish curry. Food was good but the service today - not so much
My husband finished his food first and in less than a minute the plates were cleared. I finish mine and the same happens. Then the waitress asked if we need anything more and we said no. We are finishing our Teh Tarik and the bill is on the table. We are still drinking water and she's come to ask if we are ready to pay and I said no. I paid only when we were really done and left.
I come to a restaurant for the good and it's vibe. This just ruined my mood.
That staff(never seen her before-although visited early September) should have asked before clearing the plates or asked us if we need the bill or wait for the customers to finish their drink before asking if we can pay. That's basic minimum courtesy at restaurant which charges 12.5%service charge. The place wasn't busy at all unlike weekends. There were 5 tables empty where I sat and more on the other side, so it wasn't like the place was busy and they wanted people to leave sooner to make space for new customers. This was sometime in the evening and many hours before their closing time. It was just atrocious like they just want us to leave the place the minute we are not going to order anything more.
What's worse was that even after charging 12.5% service charge in the bill, the person ( another staff) who asked for payment is showing the screen for tips !
It just reminded of the euston branch experience and I'm definitely done with this sort of service.
Don't charge for service if this is what you want your customers...
Read moreMe and my family visited yesterday. The food was good, the attitude of the staff was rude and unacceptable.
We reached at 9.30 pm and were welcomed by the interim manager (Carlos) and told that tables were available. A waitress came over and told us the we needed to order urgently as the kitchen was shutting soon. We placed an order after consulting her, and ordered an additional dish based on her assessment of our party size. The food arrived and shortly after she went round various tables with bills and asked everybody to pay as the tills were closing. I had to stop my meal and was forced to access my card with oily hands as she was insistent. A few minutes later she came back and said we had to finish eating in 5 mins as the restaurant was shutting. When we indicated that was not possible as the food had just arrived she asked if we wished to speak to the manager. Carlos then came over and asked us to finish and leave in 5 minutes as the restaurant was shutting. When we asked why he had offered us a table and let us order food if he knew the restaurant was shutting, he said the closing times were on the website and we could not continue for health and safety reasons. Then he started sweeping and spraying adjacent tables, moving chairs and replacing cutlery for the next days service. We finished what we could and requested another waitress to pack our remaining food which she kindly did.
The behaviour and attitude of the front of house staff and manager were appalling and unacceptable. The attitude seemed to be one of getting customers in and for them to order food but not wanting them to complete their meal. At no time were we informed that we would be unable to complete our meal or that that one could not eat in the restaurant after the kitchen had closed.
I have never been subjected to such anti-customer behaviour in any restaurant before and needless to say this has left a bitter taste and we will not be going back. And to think that we had to pay a service charge for such poor behaviour. We are hugely disappointed and were embarrassed as we had visiting family from abroad with us. I would urge future customers to enquire if they will be allowed to finish their meal before placing their orders...
Read moreRoti King in Battersea is located in a brick railway arch next to the Battersea Power Station. It can be easily missed as the sign isn't visible when the giant canopy is out at front. You cant miss the big smiles and happy workers though - everyone is so friendly. The manager (Spanish speaking man with grey fox hair!) was super helpful and accommodating and managed to get a party of 12 all settled next to each other which we really appreciated.
The menu at Roti King is about as authentic as you'll get and its well worth trying more than a few of the items, but there are a few dishes that you definitely shouldn't miss. The roti canai is a must-order, and it's made with perfectly flaky layers of dough that are cooked to perfection. The dahl is also excellent, and it's a great way to soak up all the delicious spices.
If you're looking for something more substantial, the beef rendang is a great option. The beef is cooked in a rich and flavourful curry sauce, and it's served with a side of rice. The nasi goreng is another popular choice (my fave), and it's a great way to try a variety of different Malaysian dishes.
The ambience at Roti King is a bit no-frills, but it's not unpleasant. The restaurant is located in a railway arch, so there are exposed brick walls and a bit of a industrial feel. But the tables are clean and well-spaced, and there's a nice buzz of activity in the restaurant.
Overall, Roti King is a great place to go for delicious and affordable Malaysian food. The service is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the food is consistently good. If you're looking for a great meal in Battersea, I highly recommend Roti King.
Avoid lunch times unless you get there early as you can easily wait over an...
