Singapore Garden has been around for as long as I can remember and live through all the changes throughout the years. Times change and you change with it. There is a reason why it survives as one of the very few. The decor is contemporary and service is good. The food has always been on par but nothing too special about it. Well until I had the Hainanese Chicken Rice, a dish so famous in Singaporean cuisine. Honestly it is probably one of the worst Hainanese Chicken Rice I have ever had… The chicken was of poor quails and overcooked, the soup was lukewarm at best and the rice, the most important element in this dish, was not even warm but dry and lacked the chicken taste. My son and I were so disappointed. As said, service is good, good ambience and ideal place to sit with a bottle of wine in the evening. I am just utterly disappointed with the signature Singaporean dish. Admittedly it is not an easy disk to make but if you couldn’t make it right, my advice would be to take it out of your menu. Food 6.5/10, ambience 8/10, service 8/10, value for money 7/10.

This is one of the few places that does Singaporean Chilli Crab (so this is my review of this dish). Service is quick, but impersonal if you’re picking up. I’ve been there a few times and if I’m pickup a lot (£100+) or a few items, the waiters are always the same- not that friendly. That doesn’t matter at the end as I only have to deal with them for a few minutes. The main thing is the food. I usually go to Rasa Sayang, but they didn’t have any crab this time, so I tried Singapore Garden instead. The dish was presented well and the flavour, although not that spicy (you can ask for it to be made more spicy), you can taste the sweetness of crab in contrast to the spicy level, which is the main point. You definitely should add the noodles as a base, as it does soak up the sauce well. I do prefer the chilli crab at Rasa Sayang because the spicy level is much better from the get go without having to make it more spicy, but as a alternative you should give the chilli crab at Singapore Garden at try.

My husband and I have been here for lunch and dinner. We enjoyed the food both times. The beef ho fun was delicious and had the distinctive wok hei. It was amazing as leftovers for my lunch the next day, too. The beef rendang and braised pork belly were likewise scrumptious. However, the Hainanese chicken rice was not very authentic; the chicken skin was yellow and wrinkly and the meat was rough, unlike the chicken rice I grew up eating in Singapore. As for desserts, I was really interested in trying the sago melaka. I mostly enjoyed it, though I feel like it could do with less gula melaka syrup, as it was too sweet for me. My husband got mochi, which was unremarkable. They were also out of the hazelnut and coconut, so he could only choose from chocolate and mango. Overall, though, I like the food and would come back to try out other things on the menu. Service is professional and polite. Prices are a bit high, however, so I’d personally save my visits for special occasions.

When Yee Gan calls, you just have to answer, especially when he's inviting you out to try a Malaysian restaurant he swears by. Since a few of my close friends live just around the corner from this place, I'm quite surprised I've never been before. It is slightly non-descript and Swiss Cottage isn't the first place that comes to mind when I think Malaysian food, but the people behind Singapore Garden know their stuff when it comes to food.

YGO took the lead and ordered up a variety of mains: Roti Canai, Beef Rendang, braised duck, and some sort of noodle dish. The rendang was impeccable with a thick rich sauce coating such tender pieces of beef that they flaked at the touch and melted in your mouth. The sauce had that full bodied mouth feel that lingers for minutes after each bite and a deep slightly smoky spiciness that was incredibly addictive.

The duck was tender and juicy while the noodles, while good, didn't really stand out in my mind. The roti canai was absolutely fanatastic and is one of those dishes I could eat at any time. Essentially, it's a bowl of curry sauce and freshly fried flatbread (very similar to the Indian version of the roti). The curry was hot and spicy with bold flavours and just enough weight to cling to the roti. The roti itself was fresh off the pan with glistening butter soaked layers just begging to be eating .How could I resist?

Drinks wise, they do boast a full bar with some interesting options. In particular, the 25ml serving of Johnnie Walker Blue Label for £10 caught my eye. Now this stuff is usually in bars for around £40-50 per 50ml serving so this was a relatively good price. Given that bottles cost around the £100 mark, I don't see them making much profit on this but I'm not complaining. The thing I will complain about is the amount of ice they put in my glass despite my request of just one ice cube. I had to dig that out in a hurry before it diluted it beyond tasting. Now it may just be that I didn't have it the right way (or it may be such an old bottle that the flavours had faded), but I don't see the allure of Johnnie Blue when a bottle of Glendronach or Laphroaig can be had for significantly less. But that's beside the point.

Thus, come for the food, enjoy yourself, but aim to get your drink on somewhere else. Pricewise, it was reasonable with food, drink and service coming to £27/person which ain't too bad given the location and the...

I have been having birthday parties dining and taking out out at Singapore gardens on Fairfax Road for over 20 and something years, all my friends and family has dined in this restaurant, being a very local customer. Just after covid I think we went to the restaurant , spent a lot of money as usual , even bought couple of bottles of vueve cliqout champagne. I usually go for Dover sole, but on this occasion the fish was off and , no taste, was not to the standard I’m used to, the rest was quite empty, so the food had a lot of time to be prepared properly, I was not happy do I asked for the waitress to take the service charge off as it was not compulsory, and I also don’t think I’ve had a good service, considering the taste and the appearance of the fish, well I called on Sat the 10th by of December 2022, at about 7pm to book for a table for 2, to my astonishment, the supervisor called Anne , advised me Rabat , if I don’t pay for service charge, her staff will not be happy to serve me or not serve at all, do I asked her to explain why as service charge is not compulsory, you cannot tell a cu for over 30 years that , it’s so unprofessional, and o think this woman is not good for business. I thought I’ll leave a review on this, as I can’t get my head round this. Where is the loyalty here, and also where’s is the customer service for crying out loud. This is against the law to refuse to serve a customer beca they refused to pay service charge , because they did not get a good service. This is absurd, you need. to get your game up and also Anne needs to know where to draw the line, she needs to how to talk to customers, and needs to get her facts right, I won’t be coming back to Singapore Gardens again, I took my custom somewhere else, and they were happy to have me. Good riddance...

I was recommended to this restaurant by a client, although she did mention that it was overpriced. We arrived earlier than anticipated with my son it was part of our post Christmas get together dinner! We entered the restaurant 5 minutes before they were open. My son asked if they were open, we were greeted with just about! Very unwelcoming and unpolite. The whole experience here was unpolite. After being seated I asked the waiter if they have any vegan options and he very confusingly said don’t know what you normally eat at Chinese restaurants as very difficult! He suggested mixed vegetables which I ordered. For starters we had spring rolls. TO MY HORROR WHILST EATING I FELT SOMETHING IN MY MOUTH LIKE PAPER. Which I took out, it was not paper it was a long piece of STRING!! There were many people with children eating if a child ate that they could have choked! I showed the waiter who very quickly took away the spring rolls and bought us another portion. They did apologise but didn’t offer anything in return or reduce the bill. At this point I was very put off by anything prepared in this restaurant’s kitchen. I was so hungry and was looking forward to my main food otherwise I would have walked out at this point. The whole experience here was very weird everyone had masks on like we had just come out of a pandemic! I will not be returning!! Ohhhh and lastly I couldn’t eat all the tofu I ordered so asked to have this packaged for takeaway in a separate takeaway dish to my sons chicken, which he didn’t finish. Guess what they did?? They put it into the same container. The same waiter who knew I am vegan and who specifically said 2 separate containers...
