Of course we had to do the pub fish and chips thing while touring England and we happily found our way to St Stephen's, across the street from Big Ben. Totally random choice that worked out well. It was a bit confusing to find where to enter based on how we approached (two doors right next to each other) but the host quickly saw our confusion and welcomed us to a cozy table in the second room. Really nice place with tall ceilings, big windows, dark woodwork, very pubby. It was busy and a bit noisy but not too noisy for us - we found some pubs in London were super noisy and rowdy in the after work / supper time period, but not here. There was also a big outdoor seating area but we were happy to be inside.

The food and drinks came pretty quickly given how busy they were. The portion of fish was HUGE. We have had a lot of fish and chips being the east coast of Canada, and this was the biggest portion of fish either of us has seen. It was fresh and tasty, not fishy, and the amount of batter was just right and perfectly crisp. The tartar sauce was really good, with a nice zip to it - something unique is in there and I'd say it was the best tartar sauce I've had. And I'm a self-proclaimed tartar sauce expert! We couldn't decide what kind of fish it was and our server said it was hake. Really nice, and I would describe it as a cross between haddock and cod. The chips/fries and onion rings were very good, as were the drinks.

Our server, whose name I have forgotten, was great. Very friendly and attentive yet laid back. Perfect personality for the venue.
