I came here for the sushi and it did not disappoint! We ordered the Prawn gyoza, London London, Snow cone maki, Salmon and avocado, Crispy prawn maki, Pink lady roll and the Dragon roll. Everything tasted so fresh and filling. Our bill came out to roughly £85 including service fee.
Which brings me to the negative, the service here so so terrible, I wanted to cry. I had a reservation and arrived a little earlier so I had to wait for my table which was fine, because I could see the restaurant was busy. They eventually sat me down, and gave me the menu, there was a QR code on the table, but seeing as I was handed a menu, I thought I would order verbally as I needed to ask questions about the food. I need to be sure what was in each item as my friend has a lot of allergies.
I sat for 40 minutes and no one came to me to ask me what I would like to order or if I’ve ordered via the QR. I managed to flag a waitress and said I would like to place an order and that I had some questions, they said they were busy and tagged someone else to come to me, that waiter said he would be with me in a moment, I waited another 10 minutes, I got his attention a few times and he kept giving me the ‘one minute’ gesture. I waited another 15 minutes before I just ordered via the QR code. I could not order anything my friend wanted as we needed to speak to someone about dietary alternatives. I had traveled a long way to come here so I could not just get up and leave either.
They took a while to get the food out, at that point, I was just fuming. Thankfully the food was not bad.
Honestly, I would not come here again solely based on the service. It’s a 0/5 for me. The service was so bad for me that when they gave the receipt, they had the audacity to add service change to it. I knew that if I asked for them to remove it, my experience would continue to get worse, so I left it on. They did not deserve the tip, but I paid it in...
Read moreThis is a dependable address for very good Japanese food at a reasonable price. Service was attentive, cheerful and incredibly quick. We stuck to appetizers and maki rolls, and our waitress was kind enough to inform us that we had over ordered, so we cancelled our sashimi salad. Our order of maki rolls arrived soon after ordering. The sushi rice was at the correct temperature, ie not too cold. I loved the Aldgate roll, a somewhat modernized classic futomaki, that reminded me of the thick futomaki I used to eat prior to the predominance of mayo drenched modern California rolls. The inclusion of gourd and tamago among the fillings contributed to the retro flavour. Our other London London roll was a typical modern maki hybrid based on a California roll topped with pan fried prawn and doused in rather a lot of kewpie mayo. Next to arrive was the nasudengaku, or grilled eggplant with miso. This was my favourite version of the dish from any restaurant, as the miso paste toppinng was not overly sweet nor dominating. I believe the miso was loosened with a little sweet mirin wine but had no other added sugar, and brushed lightly across the surface for a thin coating. A really good balance with the flavour of the aubergine. The mixed tempura had a nice light batter. Maybe not the best, most fragile, shattering, tempura I have ever tasted but very good. There were three enormous prawns among the vegetables. The tentsuyu dipping sauce could have had a more pronounced dashi flavour and more grated daikon for my taste. Last to arrive was the kaiso seaweed salad. This dish doesn't vary much from one restaurant to another. It was served too cold here though. My dining companion and I were happy with the standard of cooking at Sushinoen. Pricing was wallet friendly. The house wine at £25 per bottle was...
Read moreI had their recommended sushinoen moriawase, and it left me unimpressed. It's not to say it's bad. The ingredients for the sushi are good, but they were prepared poorly.
Eating them gave me the impression that the fish is fresh, as in that they are hardly aged. The whites are bland and chewy, the akami was not flavoured enough and the silvers which needed no aging was fine but not great.
Furthermore, due to the lack of aging, they smell a little fishy but in a way that doesn't add value to the taste. The shari is prepared well by hand, but it seems to have been mushed during cooking or when mixing with the sushi vinegar.
The wasabi is not proper wasabi, as in it's far too sweet. You could try sourcing the actual wasabi from northern UK which has some growing there. The pickled ginger was decent, but it seems that the shavings were poorly done.
Finally, the soy sauce was perhaps a little too salty. Would recommend to either swap it out, or have it prepared by caramelizing the soy sauce or even steep it in other umami packed ingredient.
The only good thing I had was the hot yuzu tea which is nicely balanced. The service was lacklustre as I have been asked what else I would like to have whilst being served to which I replied that I wanted warm water, but it never came. It felt as if they want to sell more things to me rather...
