In my mind, this place has been renamed to Mehmet Offended Me.
My lovely wife urged me that we must visit Mehmet Efendi as their sweet baklava is out of this world!
But my first visit left a bitter taste... Not because of their product range but due to their aggressive customer service.
Upon entering, the eyes were delighted by the colourful range of sweets, baklava and desserts. Their products were beautifully encased in see-through cabinets and looked like pieces of art.
At 7 pm the shop was buzzing with customers and we had to queue up. As I finally reached the counter, I requested a milky baklava and cappuccino. The customer service representative said that he didn't understand me. So, I repeated myself. He still didn't understand but eventually did the third time. He had a frown on his face all along.
He then asked me if I was eating in and I affirmed. With a look of frustration, he told me that this queue was only for take-away and that I shouldn't be here in the queue. He told me to sit down with an annoyed tone.
There were no seats available for a dine-in experience so I told him that we would take away due to their limited seating. This was disappointing as finding a parking space was a nightmare and we were looking forward to sitting down!
My wife then requested an assortment of baklava and he then told her to go over to the other side as he could not understand what she was requesting. We both are fluent in English but the Customer Service representative was of Turkish origin and was struggling.
When my wife went over, another representative very rudely told her to place her order quickly. I understand that he was under pressure due to the long queue but there is no excuse for speaking in an ill-mannered tone with your customers.
I left feeling with mixed emotions but will not visit this place again. Until they train their staff to respect their customers, no amount of baklava will entice me to visit this place.
They should also teach their staff the etiquette of customer service. It would also help if they labelled their shop so that it is clear that the queue is for take away only.
They are missing some key components of what makes good customer service. I hope the owner of Mehmet will heed this advice as I have read numerous reviews all echoing...

If I could give Mehmet Efendi more than five stars, I would. This isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a sanctuary of flavour, hospitality, and pure indulgence. Nestled in the heart of Whitechapel, Mehmet Efendi is the kind of place that doesn’t just serve food—it serves memories.
From the moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in warmth. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between elegance and comfort, with attentive staff who treat you like a cherished guest rather than just another customer. But let’s talk about the real stars of the show: the desserts.
🍰 San Sebastián Cheesecake This is not just a cheesecake—it’s the cheesecake. Creamy, velvety, and unapologetically rich, with a caramelised top that adds a whisper of smokiness to every bite. It melts on the tongue like a dream, leaving behind a trail of bliss that lingers long after the last forkful. If heaven had a flavour, this would be it.
🍮 Baklava with Ice Cream A masterclass in contrast and harmony. The baklava is everything it should be—flaky, golden, and drenched in just the right amount of syrup, with layers of pistachio that sing with every crunch. Paired with a scoop of ice cream that’s impossibly smooth and subtly sweet, it’s a duet of hot and cold, crisp and creamy, tradition and innovation. It’s the kind of dessert that makes you close your eyes and savour every second.
Every dish at Mehmet Efendi is crafted with care, but these two desserts are transcendent. They don’t just satisfy—they elevate. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or simply someone who appreciates the finer things, Mehmet Efendi is a must-visit. It’s not just the best Turkish restaurant in Whitechapel—it’s one of the best dining experiences in...
Read moreWe found this on our travels and popped in for some baklava initially but once inside it was dessert heaven! There is so much variety and choices you really are spoilt for choice. It’s a small and friendly place, seating is very hard to get as it did get very busy! We actually visited this place two days in a row! One during the evening and it was extremely busy but we just managed to get a seat which was lucky. The very next day, mid afternoon we visited again as we ended up in the same local area, again it was extremely busy, some people were standing around waiting and a lot of people came in for the takeout service. You could tell this was one of the popular places. Service was really good and attentive, very quick and food was presented well. We ordered drinks and desserts, so both came out together which was a bonus. Our food choices, included baklava, San Sebastián cheesecake, lotus pudding. Lotus cake and a chocolate ferrero rocher cake. Some of the desserts are very very rich, especially the lotus pudding, almost seemed like the bottom layer was just lotus spread melted to fit bowl! Layer on top was nice and light so did complement the pudding but for what we paid which was about £10.50 ish, that was extremely overpriced for the dessert as a whole! However, the cheesecake and other desserts we had were very nice, tasted great and presented well. Overall, the place is a little overpriced but you are in London and the prices are consistent with other shops, so ok in that sense. Food tasted great and service was definitely a 10/10. I would recommend visiting this if you are...
