On Sunday, 15 June 2025, I visited The Alfred Tennyson Belgravia with my two children for the first time. Although our reservation was at 6:00 PM, we arrived around 5:15 PM and were warmly welcomed with genuine kindness, smiling faces, and polite attention—something that made a strong positive impression from the very beginning.
From the outside, the restaurant looks like a charming little townhouse on a street corner—inviting, cozy, and filled with character. Stepping inside, you’re transported into a mid-20th-century aesthetic (perhaps 1950s-style) decorated with calming, elegant colours, vintage furniture, framed sketches and artwork that give a sense of harmony and comfort. It feels like walking into the home of someone you know, a place you go to for good food and warm conversation. I especially appreciated Stevie, a team member who noticed I was observing the framed charcoal sketches on the wall and took the time to share the story behind them while serving us—this thoughtful gesture made the experience even more special.
Our table was served by Andrejus, a well-dressed, professional yet approachable gentleman who was helpful in guiding us through a menu filled with items we hadn’t tried before. We ordered oysters, red prawns, sourdough bread with butter, green salad, steak (for my daughter), Scottish cod (for my son), and a chicken dish with leek sauce (for myself). Every dish sparked curiosity—some we had heard of, some we hadn’t—and Andrejus answered all our questions kindly.
The oysters were wonderfully fresh, served beautifully, and left a lasting taste of the ocean. The prawns were excellent in flavour, but unfortunately, only one plate arrived despite ordering for all three of us. I didn’t complain—possibly a misunderstanding—but it’s worth noting. The sourdough bread could have been slightly warmer and more toasted, but the butter served with it was absolutely outstanding: creamy, rich, almost like clotted cream—a delight!
Drinks-wise, Stevie offered me a complimentary glass of champagne, and although I had asked for apple juice for the kids, orange juice was served instead without checking in advance. My children accepted it politely, but I would have preferred if staff had asked first before making the switch.
Our starters and sides arrived within 10 minutes, but main dishes took around 20–25 minutes more after those were cleared, which made my children a bit restless. While all staff were courteous, respectful, and well-trained, at times it felt more like professional obligation than genuine friendliness. There was no particular engagement with my children beyond the basics, which I would have appreciated more in a family setting.
As for the mains: my chicken breast with leek sauce was delicately cooked but rather small and lacked standout flavour. My son enjoyed the cod, but again, portion-wise it wasn’t very filling. My daughter’s steak, however, was the star of the evening—served with roasted potatoes, leafy greens, and carrots, it was both delicious and visually pleasing.
While I was eating, Stevie returned to ask what I’d like to drink with my meal. Trusting his experience, I asked for a recommendation, and he brought two white wines to sample. I preferred the second one and was then served a full glass of it. Stevie stood out throughout—attentive, emotionally aware, and sincerely involved from the moment we arrived until we left.
The entire venue was spotless—clean, organized, and hygienic in every visible way. Price-wise, considering the location and ambience, the menu was reasonable, though portion sizes could be improved or adjusted to better match expectations.
Would I visit again? Absolutely. Whether you're with family, friends, or someone special, The Alfred Tennyson offers a peaceful, enjoyable experience with an atmosphere that wraps you in warmth. If I had the chance to return, I’d enjoy it even more knowing what to expect and how best...
Read moreWe’ve been here a few times but the last two experiences weren’t great. We came a few weeks ago and asked to sit outside when a table becomes available. We saw one becoming available and ask the waitress. She said that it’s not free. We waited for a moment and then some other people who came after us just took the table. We raised this with the waitress but she didn’t bother asking them to move. We still had a nice time indoors and food was good. However, we came back yesterday for dinner. We were seated upstairs. The waiter responsible was rude throughout and not helpful. When asked about wines he just went and recommended a £110 wine without any reasoning apart from that it’s nice. We asked to try some wines but were told we can only try wines that go by the glass. We ordered a bottle without trying then and it was fine. Throughout the waiter was unfriendly. The starters were all good but the mains were all extremely salty (especially the cod and the roast chicken). I eat very salty usually but it was honestly next level. We raised this and got a price reduction on the cod. When we finished we went downstairs to have another drink. No one really accommodated us to find a seat and when I asked the waitress about a drinks menu she just pointed me in a direction to get it myself while appearing very annoyed that I even asked for a menu. Eventually we found ourselves an area to sit but were told we can’t sit there. We then said we came from upstairs post dinner and we were then allowed to sit there. Very odd. My sister in law and father in law also asked for some wine recommendations at the bar downstairs. They tried a Bordeaux and both said they found it a bit sweet. The bartender said: no, it can’t be sweet, it’s a Bordeaux. My sister in law said: well, both of us taste it and it’s probably subjective. They then ordered another wine but it felt quite rude. All in all not a great experience, especially given the price point for what I would call gastro pub food (but at £28 per meal without sides). I might come back for drinks here and there but I hope they hire better staff in the future or make it clear to staff how to work in...

The Alfred Tennyson is located in Belgravia, it is situated on the high end retail enclave of Motcomb street. The nearest Tube is Knightsbridge which is a few minutes walk away. . This pub was build around 1850, up until the mid eighties it was called The Turks Head. This is an elegant Grade II Victorian building which holds its own amongst the glamorous shops that neighbour it along Motcomb Street. Opposite is Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant Petrus. . This upmarket Gastropub has a stylish interior with punches of colour throughout. The main bar is divided in to three sections and has a good size servery complete with comfy leather high backed stools. I’m happy to report this Gastro has ample space for those who just fancy a tipple. Upstairs is a dining room for a more formal culinary experience. Outside there are plenty of table and chairs to soak up the atmosphere of the surrounding area. . The beer line up was good, the selection was all keg with some choices you don’t see everyday on the pumps of London. I opted for a Stiegl Goldbraü, I really enjoyed my pint and price point was to be expected. The food is elevated restaurant quality food with an emphasis on British seasonal produce. The menu had traditional pub classics available, fish & chips costs £21.50. . I arrived just after 1pm and the pub was very busy with both diners and drinkers. The only seats left to sit on were the stools along the bar and at a ledge near the door which is where I sat. There was a buzzy atmosphere around the bar and the well presented staff were busy running food and checking to see that the clientele had everything they needed. . The Alfred Tennyson was an enjoyable visit, this is a great place for social dining or just popping in for a drink or two. This Gastro offers a crème de la crème dining experience and the surroundings are elegant. The service was on point and I loved the beer. This pub is well worth a visit for the sophisticated ambience alone. . ℹ️ Info correct on...
