🚇 Angel 🍺 £4.80 Amstel ❤️ An outstanding local boozer.
The Hanbury is located on tranquil Arlington Square just a stones throw from Regent’s Canal. The nearest Tube is Angel, it’s a fifteen minute stroll to get here.
This corner pub was originally built in 1856, then rebuilt by Charrington’s in a Neo-georgian style in 1937. The pub is currently under the stewardship of @truepubco who recently reopened The Ship in Borough.
This Irish themed interwar pub has two distinct sections, a dining area with an open kitchen on the left and a large spacious bar on the right. The dining area has a dozen or so tables with comfy blue velour booths, traditional chairs and a long buttoned banquette under the windows. This pub thankfully retains many of its original 1930’s features. These include, the wall panels, the doors, the servery and the fantastic back bar with original Charringtons lettering. Around the walls are a multitude of framed photos and prints of times gone by. This pub feels so homely.
The beer selection was excellent, there is a mix of familiar favourites, London brewed craft plus a couple of cask ales. I chose a pint of Amstel, my pint was great and surprisingly cost less than a fiver. This Hanbury makes its own Gin, there is even a copper still in the main bar, check out @hanburyginofficial for more info. There is a traditional pub-grub menu available plus hearty Roasts on a Sunday, Fish & Chips costs £17.
We arrived around 2pm on a Saturday lunchtime, the pub was fairly quiet with a few punters in attendance, the atmosphere was chilled and relaxed. This pub has Sky & TNT sports, so we watched a bit of the Plymouth v Southampton game. We were served by a lovely member of staff who was welcoming, upbeat and took the time to tell us all about the Gin. This pub has plenty to keep you entertained, throughout the month are Quiz nights and live traditional Irish music.
@thehanburyn1 is an absolute triumph, what a cracking boozer. The architectural heritage, the local pub feel, the warm welcome and community pub priced beer, make for one of the best pubs I’ve visited this year. Just go!

Read moreI’ve been a frequent visitor to The Hanbury, typically spending over £100 per visit, because I genuinely love its fantastic bar, delicious food, great drinks, excellent service, and the warmth of most of the staff. It’s a gem for watching sports, which is why my partner and I chose it on 3 May 2025 at 16:30 to enjoy the Arsenal vs. Bournemouth match. However, this visit was a huge letdown. We were told by the manager that no food was available due to a private wedding event, with a dismissive comment that we had “picked a bad time.” The manager’s behavior was inconsistent—super friendly one moment, rude and dismissive the next—and he seemed out of his depth, getting super flustered under pressure. There was no prior notice about the kitchen closure, which ruined our plans to eat while watching the game. It’s disappointing that a pub prioritizing loyal customers doesn’t accommodate frequent visitors, especially on busy match days, with at least a limited menu. The lack of communication about event-related closures isn’t advertised on their website either. I hope The Hanbury improves its planning and staff training to ensure all customers feel valued. Despite this, I’ll return for the great atmosphere and staff, but management...
Read moreThe Hanbury is the kind of place that feels like a second home. It's a local favourite for a reason - the food is fantastic, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, and they show sports which is always a bonus. Speaking of sports, if you're planning on watching the rugby, be sure to book a table in advance - this place can get busy when the rugby is on. But trust me, it's worth it. The excitement and energy in the air is palpable. They also have live music on Saturdays, and it's always a blast. The singer always knows how to get the crowd going, creating a lively and fun atmosphere, it's always a fun night out. They have a fantastic food menu, from classic pub grub to more upscale dishes, everything on the menu is delicious and expertly prepared. It's the perfect place to grab a bite with friends or to enjoy a relaxing meal with family. So if you're looking for a nice pub in Islington with excellent food & great atmosphere The Hanbury is definitely worth a visit, dogs are always more than...
