Ā Ā Ā Read moreI booked the Chesterfield Room (the private room) for my birthday celebrations. The location, low minimum spend, and diversity of menu were factors that led me to choose The Market Tavern. On the day, the room was set up nicely and we had a dedicated waiter, which was a nice touch. However, we had a few issues and there were some other improvements needed that make this a 3-star, rather than a 5-star review.
There was no entertainment system available. The room had speakers but those connected to the TV in the main bar area and there was no system to play music. The waitress told us people bring their own sound systems but we weren't informed of this during the booking Pre-booking and during the event, they failed to inform us the room had to be vacated by 10pm. The waitress simply announced that we had to leave the room in 10 mins. We had just finished our mains and were waiting to order desserts. The waitress then told us the kitchen had closed at 9.30pm. Again, at no point was this made clear during the booking or on the day - it is common practice to ask for last orders or let a large party know of pitching closing BEFORE the kitchen actually closes. The service in the room was ok but could've been more proactive. The waitress was unfortunately more on her phone behind the bar, than making sure we were all ok. Small things, like us grabbing her attention to pay our bill, could be implemented to vastly improve the customer experience.
All in all, decent food and on the whole a decent private room option but I think they need to up their game with service and...
Read moreCalled in for a spontaneous, not pre-booked, evening meal, with 3 adults, 3 teenagers and our dog. We were lucky there was a table available (but we were relatively early in the evening). The staff were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. The food was excellent - wild boar sausages were extremely tasty and authentic, the fish and chips was among the best we have had (and we live near the F&C capital of the south of England, Aldeburgh) and the hamburgers were filling, tasty and fun. The main course salad with grilled halloumi was inventive, and appetizing. Sadly they were out of steaks so I cannie comment on them, but the doom bar beer and the prosecco made excellent accompaniments. The decor was suitably Christmas festive without being over the top, and the atmosphere was lively but not oppressive or deafening. Overall, an authentic pub experience in the heart of Mayfair, and welcome that it did not break the bank - around £30 a head...
