A celebration of the life of the world renowned artist Turner (Joseph Mallord William Turner) brought me to this beautiful church.

Located near Berkeley Square, to mark 250 years of "Turner's London."

I was fascinated, hearing stories about the artist's life, drive, and connections with London - you'll see a map in one of the photos about where the artist went.

There are Turner walks, too.

What was most remarkable was discovering that Turner came from humble beginnings in Covent Garden - then a working-class neighbourhood. Yet by his late teens, he was accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts - highly unusual for his social standing.

Young Turner was ambitious, grew his connections, and was industrious over his lifetime.

He was connected to both aristocracy and non-aristocracy. Although known for his aristocratic patrons, Turner's work also reflected the lives and experiences of ordinary people, including those involved in industry and fishing. He kept his working-class roots, including his Cockney accent, throughout his life.

Something else I enjoyed learning was that Turner was appreciated in his lifetime - often that happens after an artist dies.

On my walk home afterwards, through Berkeley Square, I came across the second Royal Academy buildings, a few minutes walk from the church.

The 250-year celebration continues next month - in Covent Garden - where the artist began life....

The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mayfair, London, is a beautiful and serene spot that offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Located on Farm Street, this Roman Catholic church stands out for its striking architecture, with a neo-Gothic design that captures attention both from the outside and within.

Inside, the church is equally impressive, with stunning stained glass windows, intricate details, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. It’s a place for quiet reflection, whether you’re visiting for a service, exploring the art and architecture, or simply seeking a moment of peace.

Opening times are generally Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with Mass held regularly. On Sundays, Mass is celebrated at 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM. It’s always a good idea to check their website or call ahead for any special events or changes to the schedule.

The church has a long history, dating back to the 19th century, and serves as the headquarters of the Jesuit community in London. It’s known for its strong connection to the local community, with a focus on spiritual care and outreach. Visitors will also find an excellent selection of spiritual books and gifts at the church shop.

While visiting London, in celebration of our fortieth wedding anniversary, we planned a visit to this exquisite Jesuit church to attend evening Mass and tour the interior. Well located, a short ride from Westminster, we observed the awesome artistic beauty radiating throughout. Each step led us through the very heart of this magnificent church. On our sides were the thoughtfully designed stations of the cross. The Saturday vigil Mass, was very well-attended, the homily excellent, and the music was delightfully engaging. Ours was a wonderful experience in this...

Beautiful neogothic church designed by Joseph John Scoles (1798-1863). Popularly also known as Farm Street Church, the facade is in imitation of the west front of Beauvais Cathedral. The high altar was designed by Augustus Pugin (1812-1852) who also worked on the interiors of the Houses of Parliament and is the designer of Big Ben along with Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860). The great arched window was copied from the east window of Carlisle Cathedral.
