Read moreOn a rare visit to London, looking for somewhere to eat, and we found this place. Approaching it in the evening, there was a crowd outside and we initially thought it was full and they were queuing to get in.
We quickly realised they were all drinking outside and a member of staff told us that Thursday had become the new Friday, with a lot of people going for drinks after work and then working from home on Friday.
When we got inside it was fairly quiet, with few people eating, but the kitchen was still open so we went ahead and ordered. The speciality was pies and we both had a chorizo and wild boar pie. These were very nice, served with a generous portion of veg and mashed potatoes. It was very pleasant to get traditional pub grub, with no chips or rice, for a change.
Staff were very helpful, friendly and cheerful, ready with suggestions without being over bearing.
It is hard to describe the atmosphere, fairly quiet initially, then with more people drifting inside, chatting and enjoying themselves. The music turned up a bit and was playing Christmas songs at one point, with some people joining in and singing enthusiastically. This was slightly surreal in early July, and added to the impression that London is a different world.
A special mention needs to go to the beer, with a good selection of cask ales. Railway Porter, which unsurprisingly was a porter, particularly impressed. I like porter and finding a decent one is always a bonus.
A very clear five stars, despite the fact we were tourists, out of place with the...
Read moreWarning: California/Oregon Native here so this review will have a west coast American bias. We came to this pub for lunch on our stopover in London. I’m a big Fish & Chips fan so that’s what I wanted when we got back into the UK.
The guys at the bar were really cool and made some good beer recommendations as I hadn’t had a lot of English beers before. I ordered up the Nicholsons Fish & Chips and my wife decided to try one of the famous pies. I’m almost positive she picked the Hand-Pulled Lamb Shank Shepherd’s Pie…but I was quite jet lagged and I don’t remember for sure. Either way, it was good for the 1-2 bites I had. It was very rich and filling though so she didn’t finish the pastry part. I was very happy with my Fish & Chips. The fish was super crispy and perfectly battered. The fries were some of the better cooked ones I had while I was in London so I was happy about that. Had a good crisp and just had more flavor than others.
All in all, a nice fun little pub that was within walking distance of our hotel (The Westminster). Good food that came out pretty quickly and friendly staff. It was a little odd drinking room temperature beer, but it was still tasty and it was so cold outside it didn't bother me much. I’d definitely eat here again if/when I’m in...
