We came for something to eat after visiting Strawberry Hill House for the day. We like going to Wetherspoons as its reliable and affordable and was happy when we found this place. We used the map on our phone to walk and it didn't take long at all, a light stroll of around 15 mins up to the High Street then round the corner.
On entry we entered the required Covid-19 Track and Trace forms and put them in the box, alternatively you can use the app. Even though there were people there and entering gradually, there was enough room and choice where to sit when we came in. We opted for a booth as it was nice and roomy.
My phone had packed in and my friend didn't have the app so we were worried about how we would order food. You can order via the Wetherspoons app or do like we did and go to the bar where we asked someone if we could order. They politely told us they would come to our table to take our order and swiftly did.
We didn't have to wait long for our food at all. Literally 5-10 mins. I ordered Scampi, Chips and Peas with a side of Onion rings and my friend had Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas. Food was good temperature and tasty. We enjoyed our meals and chatting.
After letting our stomachs settle we decided on desserts. My friend ordered the Apple Crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream and I had the Chocolate Fudge Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream. Mine was okay but the brownie wasn't very chocolatey. I preferred when they used to have the Chocolate Fudge Cake. I tried some of my friend's crumble and whilst the flavour of the Apple was nice, the crumble was soft. She didn't like it but I thought it was okay, just perhaps it had been microwaved and not put in the oven like a good crumble should be.
Nevertheless not much to complain about, good value for money, spent plenty of time there chatting and having a laugh. Would definitely recommend as they do deals...
Read moreToday, I went to the William Webb Ellis with some friends who were visiting from Brazil. I told them that this pub was excellent and I had a great time with both the food and the service. However, I was left very disappointed and frankly embarrassed by the extremely poor service. The staff behind the bar were long faced and seemed quite miserable to be doing their jobs. The service was truly poor! We ordered food and sat down with our beers. Over 20 minutes later, the food had no yet arrived (simple stuff such as chicken wings and chips). I went over to ask how long we had to wait for the food and was told by an unpleasant member of staff that I had to wait 40 minutes! That maybe wouldn't have been a problem if he had informed me when ordering that we had to wait one hour for the food. He didn't offer any apologies for the delay. Also, we had initially ordered fish and chips but we're told they've had ran out of fish at 3pm on a Saturday! Interesting as the pub was not busy. While I was over the bar asking about our food, another customer was also enquiring about hers and told me that her table had been waiting for their food for over 50 minutes. We were quite annoyed by the very long wait and poor costumer service by the two guys behind the counter. I then asked to cancel my food order and the return of my money. I dealt with another miserable looking guy (maybe the manager??), who offered no apologies for the poor service. Over 15 years, I've been on numerous Wetherpoons all over England and never had such a poor experience as today at William Webb Ellis. Everything was very poorly managed, both in the kitchen and the bar. I hope they can improve on today's poor offering next time and treat their customers with more respect and consideration. I had to profusely apologise to my Brazilian guests!...
Read moreFirst time we went it was pretty good, so we went back for a 2nd time. Ordered our food and the app told us about 15 minutes expected wait time, so we then waited and 45 minutes went by and finnaly got served. The food we typically order wasn't available, so was like a 1/3rd of them menu. Once the order went throuh a person came up to us and said that some of the items were not available, so it seems it wasnt about a 1/3rd of the menu that wasn't available but rather half of it. Only one of the coffee machines out of the 2 next to us had milk in it which is what it is. Onto the food, the curry we ordered tasted like the chicken was overcooked or microwaved, the garlic naan bread was very wet and rubbery and the sauce tasted as if they just dumped a bunch of chilli powder and didnt bother to mix and cook it through. We also ordered a apple cumble, which also didn't have stuff like custard available for it which it normally does, therefore we ordered it with 2 icecream scoops, what they brought to us was a just above room tempature apple crumble with icecream that had melted for the most part and started to just look like they just put a side of yogurt. We had also ordered chips with shwarma on top or something like that, which the temperature was 'ok' for it i guess. Also as an extra we ordered a side of a brisket just to try. The side of brisket tasted like as if they went to aldi bought the cheapest steak and overcooked it and shredded it and put barbeque sauce onto it, and the placed it into a small plastic container dmaller than the size of your palm. The shwarma was also not a good portion...
