This has to be one of the few remaining traditional East End pubs in Wapping. It’s named after the celebrated English painter Joseph Turner, who developed the original ‘Old Star’ tavern in 1851, after converting two cottages that he had inherited. The pub underwent a major yet sympathetic refurbishment in 1987 and was then renamed as a tribute to its original owner. Today it sells a good selection of well kept real ales and has large screens for watching live sports. For me the latter is a little too intrusive, but these things are a matter of personal taste. Nevertheless, this classic, historic pub Is definitely worth seeking out.

I've been to the Turner's Old Star quite a few times and if you like an old school friendly East End pub then pay it a visit. When I went recently it wasn't busy but it was early in the week and just after Christmas. It is named after the painter Joseph Turner and was also used in the film Legend as the ‘Pig and Whistle’ pub where the peace talks between the Krays and the Richardsons soon descend into a massive punch up. It also has a pool table and live sports on a few big screens.

One of the last remaining old school pubs in Wapping. The clientele are local down to earth people. Many other bars in the area are geared up to attract young people with gimmics and premium beers; not here! It is steeped in history and has many features that have not been replaced for years, if ever. The price of a pint is also 20% cheaper than other pubs in the area. So if visiting Wapping and you want a more authentic experience, then this place is a must visit!

Also had an unfortunate experience with racism here. Pub lady made a racist comment about Bangladeshi people moving into the neighbourhood and the problems Bangladeshi people cause. I took offence and tried to explain that not liking the people in the neighbourhood is ok, but not liking all Bangladeshi people because of it is not ok. She did not like my explanation and told me to leave the pub - I insisted that she not kick me out on the basis of racism. At my request, she then proceeded to call the police and asked the officer to ask me to leave. I cordially agreed and I left; won’t be going back. Won’t be suggesting this place to my friends. Sad day, it being...

Some friends and I came up to London from Eastleigh yesterday and this was one of our stops as requested. Lovely old back street pub, the landlord and landlady made us feel really welcome and we got a few stories from the landlord about the filming of Legend of which was quite amusing. Will definitely go back there again next time we’re up there and I think everyone should go and support pubs like this and other old school pubs to keep them going!!

Support the old school back street pubs as they’re the most friendly places to have a...
