Vesper Bar — Restaurant in London

I’ve visited this bar many times because I loved the atmosphere, but recently I experienced extremely poor treatment from different staff members. I have noticed that if you’re a woman, you may be treated very differently.

Every time I’ve had a reservation, even when the bar isn’t busy at all, they try to seat us at the very back for no reason, as if to hide us away. Unlike other places I go to, where you are given the choice of which table to sit at when the venue is not crowded, this bar does not offer any real option. On some visits, I was asked where I wanted to sit, but it felt like they were deciding for us anyway. This is confusing and frustrating, especially when the bar is mostly empty.

On another visit, a server rolled her eyes at us after bringing the wrong drink. I had requested a specific order that should have been clearly communicated to the bartender, but unfortunately, that did not happen. Later that same day, a different staff member made the same mistake. I had ordered a decaf espresso martini, and even though we joked about it and they should have remembered my order, they still brought the wrong drink again.

On top of that, the manager embarrassed us by speaking loudly and asking if we wanted to make a complaint immediately. I felt like I had done something wrong, but the repeated mistakes and the way we were treated made it clear this was about poor service, not me. We had only asked for the name of the server who rolled her eyes, and she went to her colleagues, causing everyone to look at us, which was completely unacceptable. (The bar covered the bill that night as an apology, even though we insisted on paying we didn’t come here for anything free, and we don’t want free things!)

Additionally, it was obvious and uncomfortable how female customers are treated differently compared to male customers. I noticed in every visit that female staff members treat male tables with smiles and even sit on their knees to take orders, whereas when the table is all women, the service feels uncomfortable and dismissive. This highlights a clear gender-based difference in service, which should not be happening.

This kind of behavior should be addressed in your policy so women know what to expect if they decide to come and enjoy a night out without men they may be seated at the back and receive poor service for which they still have to pay. Honestly, it’s a joke, and I need an explanation for what is going on there. I can’t believe I’m even writing this, but it needs to be said, and women need to know what to expect...

We visited for my girlfriends birthday - just for drinks.

Booking was simple, but on a Thursday evening I would say it wouldn't be necessary.

We were greeted with two complimentary cocktails - absolutely not expected but really appreciated. A very nice touch. The complimentary snacks were also delicious and again, a great touch.

The staff were incredibly good, attentive but not over the top. Refilling your drinks and snacks when they become empty without you even noticing.

The cocktails were good, but not exceptional. Really flavourful but lacked the real "spark" you would expect for the price.

The setting is exceptional with the music at the correct volume and the décor plush and comfortable.

Perfect when you want to push the boat out a little for drinks, but I would say the prices were reasonable all things considered.
