I was on a Saturday bakery crawl with a friend and this was our third stop after brunching at a café previously.

Primarily came here for their new Cercle swirl which is obviously their version of the viral supreme croissant from Philippe Conticini. I went with the red berry crumble and cream flavour and then I also got an apple crumble danish with blackberries to go.

The Cercle swirl was alright, flaky but could have been a lot flakier, the dough also felt soft when I held it so it wasn't the best croissant texture wise for sure. I didn't personally enjoy the cream so much as it was too sweet for me but I suppose I have chosen the wrong flavour.

Apple danish on the other hand was lovely, crispy and flaky with a very creamy custard filling which wasn't overpowering, topped with lots of crumbles and apple which I really enjoyed. However, I didn't really see the point in adding blackberries on both sides as they didn't add anything to the filling. I had thought if blackberries were in the pastry name them the should have at least infused the filling with blackberry juice so that was a disappointment.

Price wise they were definitely on the more pricey side, with a take away and have-in difference of about £1. Overall, it was an okay bakery for me but I am happy to come back and try the kouign-amann next time since that's their other...

This was the worst experience I have EVER had at a bakery. I have lived in Hackney for 29 years and have never felt so judged and negatively profiled. I am a pregnant black woman who went into this shop with a friend for a pastry. It was a very hot day so I sat down outside after paying for pastry with some tap water to catch my breath. Straight away I was approached and shouted at that I was not allowed to sit (even though the bakery was empty) as my pastry was 'for take away'. I explained I was pregnant and needed a moment and was told that I was entitled and being pregnant doesn't mean anything - elaborating that I should go to the park or home if I need water. I was very shocked and upset so I asked for a refund. The owner then said to come inside for the refund which I did. Once inside I was shouted at by the husband and staff saying that they would not give a refund. I believe this behavior was fueled by judgment, classism, and anti-pregnancy behavior. Not pregnancy-friendly at all. I tried explaining why I sat for the moment to be told that pregnancy is not a factor. This whole situation ruined my day and made me lose hope in human decency. I will not be returning or handing my hard-earned money to such a rude, judgemental family who has no human dignity. Gentrification at its finest....

There is a separate wheelchair accessible entrance which is kept locked & is to the side of the building. EDIT - August 2022 there is now a table inside blocking the wheelchair accessible locked door.

Without a handy customer inside who spotted me like a lost kitten at a door and alerted the staff, it would have been impossible to get in. Once I was in, tables had to be moved and I had to send an able bodied friend to queue, as the accessible door puts you as far from the main door queue as possible. To get out, again the door was locked and we had to wait for a staff member to get another staff member.

I had seriously grumbled at the owners shortly before my visit, via a direct message on Instagram, as I'd visited and couldn't see the accessible door, as it isn't sign posted and is around the side of the building. So I had given them a very angry cross message & they were therefore aware that cake and coffee starved grumpy wheelchair users had their eye on this place.

There is an outside table area, but I think you have to order inside. The area is up on a platform/ steps.

Coffee cups hard to hold as they don't have handles. Pretty but impractical for some disabilities/ hot black coffee drinkers.

Croissants & pain au chocolate absolutely...

- toffee banana and toasted sesame kouign amann £2.60 out/£2.95 in - praline and pistachio brioche feuilletée £5.95 out/£6.95 in yeast is best known for their aesthetically-pleasing viennoiseries and baked goods, as well as their beautifully-decorated cafe overlooking regent’s canal, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed brunch or coffee break. i would recommend coming early (especially on weekends) to ensure a wider selection bc at around 2pm on a sunday, most of the goods were sold out. nevertheless, we tried out a kouign amann and brioche feuilletée, although their supreme croissant did catch our eyes too. the former is definitely one for the sweet tooths bc sugar was essentially all we could taste and the banana and sesame flavour was very weak. it was also more on the doughy side, rather than flakey and crispy. we preferred the brioche feuilletée, which was generously filled with a praline and pistachio custard. the filling was surprisingly not too sweet but sadly the flavour was missing the mark again bc there wasn’t much pistachio flavour but the pastry did have a lovely texture! prices can be a bit steep if you eat-in so i’d recommend taking away so you can still have the enjoyment
