NEW EDIT: Recently we were walking trough Copson street and noticed something new on the window. A rating of 4 for hygiene! Excited we went inside and sat down. We had a good time ordering our meals and chatting and we realized the kitchen is still visible from the restaurant, which is very nice. So we were just watching how the chefs made our food as we were the only customers at that moment, I was certain it was for us. Everything went well until it was time to make sushi. One chopping board, for everything. Vegetables, raw fish and meat! And no gloves, no hand washing in between. I was a little concerned but since i had ordered a stir fried meal i thought i would be safe. Wrong! The food was delicious, well presented and the table and plates were very clean too. But soon after we left, my stomach began making unholy sounds. I was lucky i found a public toilet on my way back or i wouldn’t have made it in time. My other 2 family members weren’t affected, luckily. It is also because i have a weakened immune system that i reacted this way. I will give some more stars for trying to improve hygiene and cleanliness! But i hope in the future the chefs wear gloves, use colour coded chopping boards, and try not to contaminate vegetables with fish and meat, because these are often lightly stirfried, not long enough to kill any bacteria. I will happily return if these minor problem get solved.

OLD EDIT: The more times i went, the dirtier it was. It seems like this lovely place is being neglected in terms of hygiene. The plates are sticky underneath which makes me think they dont do the dishes. The bottles of soy sauce on the table are sticky as well as the table itself. I recently checked the food hygiene rating and its 1 star, which is really dangerous for some people, especially with raw fish being served. I will change my review if the restaurant improves the hygiene to 4 or more stars which is a necessity for a sushi restaurant.

OLD REVIEW: Today i had a special celebration. This was my first time visiting Kyotoya and i don’t regret anything. The food came super quick, it was very delicious and top quality. The owners are lovely people and work hard, i will definitely...

Not been here in 6 years but my opinion is the same aka very good value for money..

You cannot miss this place as it has quite a garish red sign with flapping Japanese banners..ducking under these will lead you into a small sheltered place with laminate floors and pine tables.

When we sat, we were facing the open kitchen, where a lady approached us which I confirmed I had a table booked...P.s this place is tiny so book!!

The menu offered the usual sashimi, maki, nigiri and udon noodle dishes , but it was 8 pieces each for around £6-7 mark, We ordered the tuna sashimi, nigiri and salmon maki... tampura prawns, beef ramen and Seafood udon soup.

Anyway when the sushi arrived I was impressed with the size of the maki roles. The quality of the tuna was also excellent, beautiful red coloured meat in thick slices...nom..

When the mains arrived, these looked divine. The beef in the udon soup dish looked good, My Seafood was beautifully cooked but wasn't keen on the type of fish used? Uncertain what it was..

They now have a drinks license again so you can order plum wine, sake etc

They don't take cash either but overall really good quality food and nice service who let you doggy...

Came here recently with my family and we had a table booked for 8 people. I was looking forward to this as hadn't had decent sushi since going to Japan last year. The only negative is the surrounding area looks unappealing and when you walk in you could easily mistake it for a takeaway. Having said that it feels like an authentic far eastern restaurant. I ordered the mixed sushi, chicken fried rice, pork and duck donburi and prawn tempura. I took chicken fried rice home as was stuffed. All food was outstanding the sushi in particular was just so fresh. The prawn tempura was perfect. Especially the batter as no element of grease. The pork and duck donburi could have done with a little more sauce but that is only my personal preference rather than a critique of this place. The service was outstanding, the staff really know how to be attentive, though the only surprise was when I asked for the chicken fried rice to be taken away I was given the takeaway box to do it myself. Which we all had a giggle about and no problem but unusual. Overall I completely recommend and this is no longer a hidden secret as it was consistently busy with people even sitting outside! Overall...

A Hidden Gem with Exceptional Sushi! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome by the sushi master and his attentive staff. The atmosphere immediately set the tone for a memorable dining experience—cozy, inviting, and full of character. The sushi itself was a standout. The quality of the ingredients was top-notch, fresh, and flavorful, and each piece was crafted with care and precision. You can tell the sushi is made to order with real attention to detail. This wasn’t our first visit, and it certainly won’t be our last. Every time we’ve been here, we’ve had nothing but amazing experiences. If you're looking for authentic sushi in a welcoming setting, this place is an absolute must-try. 10/10, highly recommend!

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner and it was fantastic. The restaurant itself is lovely: well lit, nice music, comfortable seating. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food came out very quickly. We ordered the set menu for 2 which came to £17 each which was great value considering we got miso soup, 8 pcs sushi, 6 pcs gyoza, teriyaki chicken, shichimi beef, rice and a salad. Highlights were the teriyaki chicken (divine) and the miso soup. The only slight let-down was the beef beef - a bit overcooked and chewy - but everything else was delicious and we left feeling stuffed. Overall a great evening and I highly recommend to students for affordable sushi! (Boyfriend says great selection of beers)
