Disappointing experience here for my birthday. Was taken as a treat by a friend who had prepaid for my meal. Started promisingly with two tasty starters of scallops and truffle mushrooms on toast with a poached egg. Really delicious. Main course, my partner chose the beef cheek (delicious) and I chose the 10z sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and harissa salt chips. Then the wheels came off... I don't think the chips were salted at all. The peppercorn sauce was very sweet and not at all the peppery tang I'd hoped for. But the steak itself - 5oz of it was just pure fat. Pretty much inedible. I mentioned this to the lovely waitress who collected our plates and she agreed it was very fatty and said 'let me see what I can do'. Then watched her approach another staff member (youngish bearded guy in a suit), and show him the plate, at which point he then looked at our table and then shake his head! As if who we are and what we looked like made any difference to the fact that they served me a steak that looked like it had been cut from a blubber whale. One nice touch was a pre ordered happy birthday plate. Very nice surprise. Desserts we chose were the roasted pineapple and coconut - bother were not great. Ice cream was mostly melted on both by the time we got them. The first was a weird dessicated little shard of something coconutty and strange tasting pineapple. And the peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake was rich and claggy, which I'm afraid I found quite cloying. Honeycomb was good though. Then there was a long delay with the bill as the aforementioned bearded waiter forgot it. Then the bill was wrong which took more time to sort. And after all that they still added a service charge! And anywhere that charges £4.50 for a bottle of still water is just shocking in my book. Had high expectations but sadly only 3/6 dishes were decent and the service wasn't quite up to par - it felt a little chaotic. Not the best birthday experience alas. Photos supplied (note the fatty steak!).

This is the midland restaurant and bar which is used in the morning for the hotel guests breakfast. We stayed for a night which included a three course evening meal. I booked this because we stayed a few weeks ago - but without the meal and enjoyed the hotel - so we were looking forward to it. Sadly the menu for such a plush hotel was very poor. Bangers and mash, burgers and fishcake was the choice of mains. The taste of the food was average. Burgers were stunning looking but dry. My starter of breaded mushrooms was nice but the chocolate brownie horribly dry. I noticed they had given us a different menu than other guests, probably because we bought the package. This in itself isn't a problem if the choice was a bit more interesting let's say. Plus the three course meal was £150 more than the bed and breakfast we had done a few weeks earlier. If you wanted a steak it was another £8.00 on top of the £150 already paid! The service was awful. Had to wait and wait for each course to be cleared and after yet another wait my wife had to go and ask where our desserts were. When we eventually got up to leave nobody seemed to know where they had put our coats and to top it all they insisted on us paying for our drinks despite the fact we were staying on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. Front of house staff were fantastic and said they would reimburse us for the meals. It hasn't gone in my bank yet but they did say it can take ten days. Just an update. We received £60.00 back which is under half of what we expected. Better than nothing I suppose.

Excellent British Restaurant parked in the midland hotel. Very nice cozy dining room. Very good value ala cart and set menus. Simple yet refined dishes made with very well sourced British produce. Flavors we bold and techniques we faultless. From the starters, mains and desserts everything was very good. Stand out dessert was the brown butter cake, perfect toasty butter flavor with a nice gooey texture. Their twist on a rhubarb crumble was interesting. Only gets 4/5 stars as the meal overall might have been a little heavy but probably due to the season and the dishes we ordered. Service was excellent and attentive. Cocktail menu was interesting. Well made and tasty. Overall a must go if your in the Manchester area.

We dined at Mr. Cooper's for lunch and dinner on Sunday the 23rd of June. Both occasions were part of the "One-Night Spa Treatment" at the Midland Hotel.

The service was some of the worst I've ever seen at any restaurant so far in my 27 years on this planet, to say it was slower than a snail would be an understatement.

At lunch, since we were ordering off the pre-selected spa treatment menu, we seemed to have gotten pushed aside and forgotten about as more importance was put on all of the Sunday Roast Dinners instead. Several guests who had arrived way after us were treated with their Sunday Roast meals first, almost immediately upon sitting down. We arrived at 1:30pm for our lunch reservation, and didn't leave until roughly 3:00pm. The waiter never came to refill our waters after first placing them there or came by to let us know why the service was so slow or that we should expect delays. No communication whatsoever. Considering the portions for the lunch were small, and it was just two-courses, it made no sense to have waited longer to get our food. Once we had the food however, it was incredibly delicious, 10/10, but the service ruined the experience for us.

For dinner, I'm afraid to say it was FAR worse. We arrived at Mr. Coopers at our 7pm reservation time. We did not leave the restaurant until about 9:45pm. We again ordered off the pre-selected spa treatment menu, ordering a 3-course meal. It made no sense why the service was so slow for dinner when virtually the entire restaurant was almost empty. We waited at the front by the desk for more than 15 minutes before a waitress came to bring us to our table. Then we waited 20 more minutes before our orders were taken. Once the orders were taken, we did not see our waitress again until we eventually got our food. We did not get the starters until about 40 minutes after we ordered. No one came to tell us why the service was so slow or that things might be slower than expected. At that point if we had not pre-paid for our meals as part of the Spa Treatment we would've left. Again, just like at lunch, more importance was placed on all of the Sunday Roast Dinners instead of on our meals. I don't know how long it took to receive our dinner entrees but it was way after 8:45pm. When we finished, we waited for our desserts and didn't get those until about 9:20pm. My starter and entree were perfect but the dessert was a disappointment thanks to the service. The top of my crème brûlée was cold, the fruit that came with it was soggy, it had clearly been sitting on the counter for God knows how long.

It's a shame the food was so delicious and the service ridiculously poor. We will not be returning to Mr. Coopers again in the...

We arrived 15min early so we were seated at the bar which gave us a chance to try the bar menu. I ordered the pear & cardamon Bellini but could not taste the cardamon which I was assured the pear purée had been infused with. Clearly it wasn't as there wasn't any cardamon syrup left so the mixologist made up some fresh and added it to my Bellini and topped up the prosecco which did improve it but for some reason the cocktail was not cold enough. We were soon seated and i would say the decor is confusing... The art work is a picture of a garden with a blue bin that's been repeated... The ceiling is super high with brass pendant lighting and then there's random trees in places... It's quite fancy but then the bathrooms are the opposite of fancy with doors not locking, paper towels everywhere. Everyone but us was dressed up... We didn't know it was fancy! Food wise... The meat / fish options were plentiful and the oxtail with marrow croquettes were proper delish and great value. The clam chowder with sweet corn fritter though only a small portion was rich and tasty (according to the meat water). The main being the sea bass in a tomatoey concoction was tasty but not groundbreaking. I had the cheese puffs with pickles to start... The cheese puffs were... Literally very thinly sliced cheese that's been deep fried served with a pickle jam - interesting but doesn't compare at all to the oxtail marrow croquettes (in terms of portion size and effort)! The starter being a spinach roll with dashi and tiny mushroom was tasty but the spinach was overpowered by the sauce... The vegetarian main (there were two to choose from) was cabbage heart served with mushrooms, teriyaki sauce and horseradish mayo (which was foamed). The teriyaki sauce was far too thick. The mushroom I did not find until i had eaten all of the cabbage. The mayo - I seriously could not taste the horseradish! I didn't in fact finish my dish as I found it far too rich! We then ordered the caramel tart and the warm pear cake which was served with chamomile icecream and Douglas fir. They were both good but on the small side... All in all, good service let down by the bathrooms and the not so greatly executed vegetarian options. 3 stars for veggie, 4 overall. Definitely think it's a great place for groups although we noticed also a lot of tables for twos for...
