From the moment we stepped into SHORYU Restaurant, the ambiance promised an evening of culinary delight, and our experience was nothing short of spectacular, thanks in no small part to our waiter, Alva. His service was the epitome of professionalism blended with a warmth and friendliness that elevated our dining experience to remarkable heights.
Alva was not just a waiter but a maestro of hospitality, striking the perfect balance between attentiveness and giving us our space to enjoy the evening. His recommendations were spot on, guiding us through the menu with expertise and enthusiasm. It’s rare to encounter someone so genuinely passionate about ensuring guests have an unforgettable experience.
Celebrating my birthday, Alva went above and beyond to make the occasion special. Without a prompt, he applied a generous 20% discount to our bill, a gesture of kindness that was unexpected but greatly appreciated. But the surprises didn’t stop there; he presented us with a complimentary mochi dessert that was nothing short of divine. Its exquisite flavour and texture were a testament to the culinary prowess of SHORYU Restaurant.
Our evening was further enriched by a conversation about the sake we were enjoying. Alva’s knowledge of Sakari No.11 Junmai Daiginjo Sake was impressive. He shared insights with such fervour and dedication, it was impossible not to be captivated. His recommendation led me to purchase a bottle from the Japan Centre, a decision I’m delighted with.
It’s rare to find such dedication and passion in the service industry today. Alva’s exceptional service made our dining experience memorable, and SHORYU Restaurant’s commitment to quality in both cuisine and customer care was evident throughout our visit.
I cannot recommend SHORYU Restaurant highly enough. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply in search of an outstanding dining experience, this is the place to be. And if you’re fortunate enough to be served by Alva, you’re in for a treat. His exemplary service, combined with the restaurant’s delectable offerings, guarantees an experience that’s not just a meal, but a celebration of culinary excellence.
Thank you, SHORYU Restaurant and Alva, for making my birthday not just special, but unforgettable. Your dedication to your guests is commendable, and I eagerly anticipate my next visit.

Read moreThe waitress asked if it was our first visit, and after we said yes, she introduced the menu and offered us some green beans (using a Japanese name). We assumed it was a complimentary starter, as no price was mentioned. We ordered ramen, curry rice, and takoyaki. The food was good, although each takoyaki had only a tiny piece of octopus inside.
I was surprised to find the green beans charged at nearly £5. If I had known the price, I definitely wouldn’t have ordered them — they weren’t necessary at all. The waitress said this was something they routinely offer to start the meal. But since she knew we were first-time customers, it would’ve been more appropriate to mention the cost upfront.
At the end, I asked to split the bill. The waitress left and had her colleague take over, but the new waitress just showed me the card machine and — “ding” — the full amount was charged to me. It felt like they were ready to take the payment until they heard we wanted to split, but didn’t properly pass on the message. A very odd experience overall.
Update:
First, I did question the charge for the green beans at the table — otherwise, why would the waitress immediately explain that “this is something we usually offer to customers”? This clearly shows I expressed my concern. However, instead of addressing it further or offering to remove the item from the bill, she simply gave a brief explanation and then remained silent. The atmosphere became awkward, and after a few seconds of hesitation, we felt pressured to just accept it. Since you were aware it was our first visit, you should have clearly stated up front that it wasn’t complimentary.
Second, regarding the takoyaki: I understand each ball is supposed to contain “one piece” of octopus, but the problem is that the piece was so tiny it was barely noticeable — essentially just a ball of batter. My dissatisfaction isn’t about whether there was octopus or not, but about the portion size and overall quality. There’s no need to use “traditional Japanese style” to cover up a lack of substance.
I appreciate the offer of a complimentary visit, but more importantly, I hope you take customer feedback seriously and aim for genuine improvement rather than offering generic...
