I like this pub and I visit fairly regularly but I had a bad experience with the doormen on a recent visit which has really ruined this place for me.
I arrived at the pub to attend a private function on the top floor around 7.30pm. I was dropped off by an Uber directly outside the door having come straight from my home.
At the time I was the on the phone to my partner and after saying goodbye and hanging up directly outside, attempted to enter the pub.
One particular doorman appeared to take umbrage with this situation and proceeded to ask me "how much I'd had to drink", after replying, "none at all... I've just stepped out of that taxi directly from home"... I received the fabled/classic "not tonight" response.
Inflated ego and a desire to flex a misplaced sense of power and self importance, this did nothing but perpetuate the stereotype of an old school city centre 'bouncer'.
After reasoning with 2 of his colleagues they agreed to my entry as long as I "didn't cause any trouble" and then attempted to justify their colleagues actions by claiming he is "just doing his job".
If this is how he does his job, he's bad at it and doing harm to the establishment. I'd suggest The Deansgate review their choice of doormen or provide them with guidance/training as this experience only served to start my evening on a sour note and likely means I won't visit again.
I'll be putting a complaint in writing to the...
Read moreAfter an enjoyable evening with friends I find it difficult to understand why four people 50 + ( age) were stopped by a doorman and questioned why we wanted to come into the bar after three / four minutes of explaining at 10:30 pm on a Friday that we were coming in for a quiet drink and having to justify why we wanted to enter we were finally allowed in to an empty bar followed by a polite couple who were further intirgrated for a few minutes on the reasons for attending this bar, wilst we all found this funny at the time we were bemused by the level of questions asked to justify wanting to come into a totally empty bar . A “few”other people managed to get past the doorman , they were also amazed at the level of interrogation, out of the window we could see some people just giving up and going off to other “busy” bars
If the manager was ever wondering why it’s so empty spend some time on the door and see all the other busy bars around ( hmm why are they busy !) This level of arrogance by the doorman was bordering on aggressive for people who had come out for a quiet quiet beer was unbalevable! We have been coming to this bar for years on company functions, and having over this period spent thousands of pounds we will NOT be returning. I would appreciate a management reply, although I suspect i won’t receive one as they are out of touch with what goes on , on their own...
Read moreI’m so pleased The Deansgate has been renovated and has reopened! As one of my local pubs, I’m delighted with the transformation of the seemingly endless floors of The Deansgate. I’m especially glad that the refurbishment has kept the original seating downstairs overlooking the bar. Those little dividers along the seats must be years and years old and the refurbishment made me anxious that they would be ripped out. Thankfully not!
I’ve visited The Deansgate for both food and drinks. Food was lovely - I went for the Scampi & Chips: Breaded Whitby scampi, thick-cut chips and tartare sauce with mushy or garden peas (£11.99). My friend opted for the Grilled Cheese Toastie: A medley of mature Cheddar, Gouda and Emmental on crisp sourdough. We both enjoyed our food and surprised at the size of the grilled cheese toastie - it was huge! Always a lovely welcoming atmosphere and always nice and warm to escape the cold weather!
P.S love the twinkly...
