Everything we go to newark or retford we always make sure to visit Castle Barge. Now I believe it's been taken over by new people. We have always enjoyed the meals and we usually order the same meals.
I can't say anything negative about the food on our most recent visit, however an observation, a well spirited yet elderly group had also come for lunch, unsure of what the process was we explained you order drinks and food at the bar, which is down a fair number of steps. They sat at the top whilst deciding what to drink and food, the gentleman working brought our food, as normal. We asked if there was any chance the food and drinks order could be taken upstairs to save the group from having to walk up and down the stairs. But the response was less than enthusiastic, and he said they would need to order at the bar. Myself, my partner and the group were surprised by the response.
Howeber one from the group went and ordered the drinks and the lady working brought up the drinks, we decided to push our luck and again asked if they could order the food at their table to save walking down and up the stairs, again it was declined, until the lady saw the gentleman struggling a little to get up the first step, (if you know the layout you will understand the top eating area has a steep step leading into seating area (combine this with the many steps needed to go below deck to prder.fppd, drink andngo.tp the toilet, and back up)) she had to pause and watch before she offered to take their orders.
You can't make a second first impression and talking to the group they were a little surprised at how inflexible the workers were to help make their experience a little less difficult.
For that I gave service...
Read moreLiterally the worst meal experience I've had. Sat upstairs in the quiet section and ordered food, wish we had not because just as the food arrived a group of extremely loud young men arrived and sat next to us despite there being plenty of other tables. They talked loudly and vulgarly about women and std's. They made jokes about gay man and used derogatory terms. It was truly vile and off putting. I would have complained to the staff but these were seemingly friends of a staff member who joined them. They were so loud that an older couple came in and chose a table in the opposite corner then left almost immediately without ordering anything. I know the bar can't be responsible for every group who drink there but this was a really nasty experience. The food was poor in all honesty, I ordered a vegetarian lasagne and it was easily the most bland microwave lasagne I've had. My partner ordered a pizza and it was utterly tasteless. There is a pizza express opposite and honestly we wish we had gone there instead. The one way system they currently impliment means walking all the way through the bar to use the restroom and then out of the back door all the way outside around the the front entrance, which is inconvenient to say the least. Toilets are...
Read moreVery disappointed with lunch yesterday. Ordered meals for four which took an inordinate length of time to arrive. A member of waiting staff eventually asked if we were waiting for food as he'd seen us there for so long, looking expectantly each time he brought orders out food for others, with our food order number in plain sight. The chips on three of the plates were very greasy. My £8.95 mature cheddar and Wiltshire ham salad was served on a small plate, approximately the size of a breakfast plate, had about half a dozen cubes of cheese and two slices of ham on a very pathetic salad with many of the green leaves decidedly off! They were green slime. The other meal with a side salad also comprised well - past its best green leaves. When I spoke to the Manager he said the leaves could not be off as they'd been purchased that day in a packet - he really could not understand that the salad ought not to have been served up - it's irrelevant WHEN it was bought and if it's in a packet or not - it was not fit to be served up and £8.95 was a rip off. The Manager's smirk and attitude compounded my dissatisfaction. We will never eat at the...
