The Mile Castle — Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

So... where to start.

We held a team night out here. We booked the table in advance and when we got there. As lots of people (don't in this wetherspoons) the team popped the table number on social media and we got lots of random thing brought to the table. It was a right laugh and all very harmless. The guys serving us brought lots of random things over to the table and we ate most things etc... however the staff put the wrong food on our table and we snapped a pic for social media as you do and a few people ate more bits. As I bought £50 worth of shots I come back to the table and find one of our party arguing with the "Duty Manager on the 3rd Floor" as he was saying we stole the food and that regardless of whether they put it down or not, regardless of their mistake of not delivering the food to the correct table we shouldn't have eaten it. We explained that it's a trending game that people do this with the app and I'm sure wetherspoons are fully aware of the game that gets played by putting your table number on social media so that friends can buy you food and silly things like peas and a glass of milk etc...

Due to this and the Duty Manager not accepting responsibility for putting the food at our table and not the next table they asked us to leave and that they would refund the shots I had just bought. He then realised it was £50 worth and retracted his offer and said drink up and get out. They wouldn't serve us another drink as we wouldn't accept it was our fault they put the wrong food on our table. We didnt know who was buying us what so we weren't to know. As it happens it was a ham and pineapple pizza (what's that all about, pineapple on pizza???) So thought that must be a joke, right?

6 of our party of 15 were on soft drinks as driving, including myself. And the others were only 2 drinks into the night when all this occurred. No one was drunk at this point.

The way the Duty Manager acted towards us was awful, rude, snotty, aggressive and totally out of order. Never go here people, and if you do, don't complain or play the table number game on social media as the staff will get the wrong table for genuine orders and blame you!

Before this, we contemplated leaving anyway as the place smelt of stale beer. Be stupidly we stayed.

Once kicked out we went to Revolution and spent around £600 on drinks instead. Wetherspoons could have had that cash but the stubborn "duty manager" wouldn't let us drink...

Staff were magnificent, We told them so and promised we'd do a review for them. |Ricky, Marty, Alistair, Chris, Katie, superb. First three were constantly in-touch, responded to emails within couple of hrs or so. Guidance and advice on the where, the how, to drop of luggage was 1st class. When finally reaching Mile Castle after a tiresome 3.5hr drive, there was Alistair waiting to guide us in. At any stage of arrival or leaving the assistance with carrying, storing luggage was amazing. Day of leaving, there was Marty ready to assist, thank you Marty couldn't have done without you.|Chris and Katie, mainly in the bar areas were again superb, helped us with advice on various aspects, thank you both so much. Staff worked hard to clear and clean tables, and floors, very difficult as the place is heaving most of the time.|Hotel and bar/restaurant areas were amazing, interesting, you saw the whole world go by, or so it seemed. Generally staff were under huge pressure and worked extremely hard. |Security at the front door was always there, checking and re-checking age identity. Pleasant guys. Intereting they periodically, entered the bar areas and checked what was happenning. Never once in four days did we see any behavioural / naughty issues with visitors.|Both of us were very disappointed with the outdoor area, perhaps our expectations were too high. Found it unattractive and very difficult to manouever as the area was table to table, chair to chair with minimal space between.|We stayed in No.10 room, comfortable, and had a huge tv. Magnificent en-suite. |Really irritable negatives were the door keys that kept failing us; would let you through one or two doors but not the next! |Wifi - non at all in the bedroom, nor 3rd floor in the bar,. 2nd floor you might be lucky, ground floor, off and on. Staff told us that by the end of April wifi will be sorted. strange really as the pub has been open for some time and hotel a few months or so!|Food, we thoroughly enjoyed, food an drink...

Situated at the corner of Grainger Street and Westgate Road like many of Wetherspoons buildings, it is a conversion of a fine Romano-Grecian style building of impressive stature. If travelling by Metro get out at Westgate Road exit. The Mile Castle is opposite to the historic St John's church and within walking distance of many places of historic interest including St. Nicholas Cathedral where the famous John Knox once preached & Haidrian's Wall (which may be restored once us Scots get Independence!). There are three levels to the Mile Castle building and the stairway can be awkward for those of us with mobility problems as the lift facility is to the rear of each floor. I am not sure if there is a way in to the right side of the building further up Grainger Street. The place provided the usual food and drink throughout the day and it can be very lively at weekends. Wouldn't recommend wheelchair travellers to the place at weekends or evenings whenever there is a game on in Toon. The place appears to be well run with adequate staff and good security but I have known the odd cold meal being delivered so don't be afraid to request a warm meal if yours is nor warm enough - staff may givE the odd grunt under their breath but will willingly resolve your difficulty. On parking you will have the normal problems of city centre parking so better get studying your city Google maps before setting off. As for wheelchair users would advise same with the added warning that this particular part of the Toon can be very frantic at certain times of the day so bear that in mind. A further warning for those using the third floor, be prepared to be interrupted after 1900 hrs on any night if the place has a band or some event on. It is a good venue to meet friends and has enough cosy places to have private conversations so...
