I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Calcutta Club, a charming curry house nestled in the heart of Nottingham, From the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted with warm hospitality by the owner and an inviting ambiance that set the tone for a delightful culinary experience.
The menu at The Calcutta Club is a testament to the rich diversity of Indian cuisine. It features an extensive selection of dishes that cater to both traditional tastes and modern palates. I started with the classic Chicken Tikka, which was perfectly marinated and grilled to succulent perfection. The spices were balanced beautifully, providing a hint of heat without overwhelming the palate.
For the main course, I opted for the Lamb Rogan Josh, a dish that truly showcased the chef's expertise. The lamb was tender and infused with aromatic spices, simmered to create a rich, flavorful sauce. Paired with fluffy basmati rice and freshly baked naan, it was a meal that was both satisfying and memorable.
Vegetarian options are also abundant and equally impressive. The use of fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques was evident in every bite.
The Calcutta Club also offers a variety of beverages, including refreshing lassis and a well-curated selection of wines and beers that complement the spicy dishes perfectly. The lassi, in particular, was a delightful treat, providing a sweet and tangy contrast to the savory mains.
Service at The Calcutta Club was impeccable. The staff were knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring that each dish was served promptly and at the perfect temperature. They were also more than happy to provide recommendations and accommodate any dietary preferences or spice level adjustments.
In terms of ambiance, The Calcutta Club strikes the perfect balance between cozy and elegant. The decor is tastefully done, with traditional Indian motifs and modern touches that create a welcoming environment. Soft lighting and comfortable seating make it an ideal spot for both casual dinners and special occasions.
Overall, The Calcutta Club offers an exceptional dining experience that goes beyond just great food. It's a place where flavors come alive, and every meal is a celebration of Indian culinary heritage. Whether you're a curry enthusiast or new to Indian cuisine, The Calcutta Club is sure to impress with its authentic dishes, superb service, and inviting atmosphere. I would definitely highly recommend...
Read moreThe primary goal of any restaurant that claims to be a higher end eatery in the middle of a city centre should be the quality of its food, but sadly, that's where the calcutta club fails.
First of all, the portions are tiny, and I mean, tiny. They come in either very large size dishes with a minute amount of food or a tiny bowl that's filled to the brim that wouldn't even fill a growing child. We were a hungry group of 4 and ordered the following:
Starters Chicken platter Vegetarian platter Amrtodari fish
Mains Chicken Rogan Josh Punjabj Karahi chicken Lamb biryani Paneer karahi
Sides Garlic naan Peshawar naan Tandoori roti Plain naan Pilau rice
Desserts Gulab jamun with pistachio kulfi One Indian tea
The starters were piping hot, juicy and flavoursome with spice and garnished well. So expectations were high.
The mains were spiced well but not enough to share, let alone fill a stomach.
The meat and chicken has all been pre-boiled and then thrown into masala to disguise it's damp, limp-wristed flavour.
The rice was not long-grain basmati, which for ANY Indian restaurant owner or frequentir will tell you, should be a punishable offence.
Then there's the prices. The average main here costs around 15 pounds and sundries like naan and rice cost £4 to £5 EACH!
The Desserts cane and I couldn't bring myself to even try it. I sipped on the authentic tea which... wasn't.
The service was good. The manager greeted us on entry, took our coats and we were promptly shown to a table. The service team themselves were polite, professional and knowledgeable and seemed to know the menu.
£155 for 4. That's about £39 each for what was spectacularly average fayre disguised in authentic settings.
If this is what passes for a decent curry house.here in the East Midlands, well let me tell you Nottingham, you have MUCH to...
Read moreThis was a dinner for our Wedding Anniversary, but we were put with everyone at the top of the Restraunt, only a slight oversight for a hint of Privacy and intimacy. We came last year and everything was perfect as it was just the two of us. This year we had our children with us, we booked a party of 4, so I don't think they thought It as intimate as it should have been, don't get me wrong the service was great, they placed down petals and hearts, but they put us with everyone else, as it seemed to make it easier for them to clean up. I'm only saying this as a server and kitchen worker myself, i think if there is a wedding anniversary you put them seperate. We had to swap food... because of our neurospicy family, but we all enjoyed what we eventually ate, this had nothing to do with the kitchen or food just us and our safe foods.. lol. You could see the servers baffled, and they came to see if anything was wrong!! It wasn't!! The food we ordered just wasn't right for us, so we swapped to accommodate each other. It's what we do. Just thought I'd put this review out there not just for the Calcutta who do amazing food so go there but for those families who have to do the same and swap meals. Also for the Calcutta Club, to realise their is nothing wrong with their food, its great, but when people swap, it's for our own sensory diets... we will be back again next year maybe sooner. At least we know what the kids like and...
