May Sum Buffet Restaurant — Restaurant in Nottingham

I remember when this restaurant first opened. The food was second to non. But I have to say that over the years I've seen a rapid decline in the quality and taste. They got off to a bad start when they wanted to seat me as far away from the good as possible especially seing that i have mobility issues. I was eventually seated in a spot out of sight beside the bar in the corner, where a yoing black gentleman with his girlfriend and baby had also been shoved, pushchair n all. Which i thought was very unhelpful. Then the lunchtime menu was dire as the food was cold and had little to no taste at all. Considering you're paying £10.50 I think it was to have, supposedly a 3 course lunch. The food on display showed signs of being over-cooked and tired, based on my observation of fresh food being heaped on top. Some food selections were actually empty for long periods of time, and they even ran out of plates at one point, so you were left waiting. The spoons were left in the food over the heat of the water beneath, resulting in very hot to touch handles, which wasn't good at all. Some of the food selections looked very overcooked and dried out. And let me say this I actually love Chinese food. But what May Sum is serving up to people is tantamount to being slowly poisoned, followed by a serious bout of diarrhoea, which is what I experienced🤢🤢. I managed to eat x2 small amounts of food, sticking with what I thought was safe, the stringy looking noodles, but they were under cooked, so I left it on the plate. The fried chicken looked like it had been fried in dirty oil, and the sweet n sour sauce looked like soup. Surely it can't get any worse🥵

I decided to skip dessert as by that time my poor battered stomach was doing cartwheels down into my butt so I decided to use the bathroom🚾 because I needed to release myself from all the junk accumulated in my trunk. My only words to describe the bathroom facilities are ABSOLUTELY FILTHY AVOID🚾🚫🚫🚫 there should be warning signs on those bathroom facilities saying "ENTER AT OWN RISK" 💀👽💀👽💩💩 just down right NASTY. The soap dispensers were empty and disgusting, covered in some sort of brown stuff (not sure what🤢💩) that looked like it had been deliberately smeared over them, and a bottle of half empty hand soap replaced them. I kid you not. It looked like covid on a bottle in disguise. You touch it, you were guaranteed to catch something.

So I exited real quick 🏃🏾‍♀️from the bathroom so I could go home and shower myself. For the record, I spent my evening running back n forth to the bathroom🚽🧻🚽🧻, which I might add was not what I had planned for my evening.

So May Sum. I can seriously say a place my son used to love growing up. I can not see myself coming back, especially if that's the effect your poorly over cooked food is going to have on me. I want to eat and enjoy in peace and not RIP afterwards.

I hope this review helps to make somebody, anybody think twice before dining at this place....

I came here with two other people and I can say my experience was utterly horrible for the following reasons:

Starting with issues regarding if food is halal, I called over the phone to confirm what meat was halal and I heard that the beef and chicken was, okay good. I come in and double check, somehow the beef now isn't but okay no big Deal. By this point I've paid and I'm going around trying to see what to eat and for foods I'm unfamiliar with I check if they're halal, and the workers gave very mixed replies through my experience there, to begin some workers don't even know what halal means which seems like an issue in itself, but whst really made my experience so horrible is that I was told certain products were halal and only after consumption and leaving the building I'm informed by a friend who previously went that it wasn't. I felt disgusted at this fact and felt betrayed by the word of some workers that things were halal when they weren't and felt responsible for my friends as I had told them that this was a good establishment and they didn't need to worry. My friend had even threw up because some of the food contained a specific meat upon asking in store he was told it did not have. This is the first of many issues I had with my visit to May sum but by far the biggest.

My second issue regarded the atmosphere in may sum it was so chaotic especially in the lines, I grab my plate to eat and see the line is moving in one way around the buffet, okay ill follow the line, next thing I know after moving 2 meters it is somehow now moving the opposite way, weird so I'll go to the opposite side, then it changes again. Then I'm hit by a kid that's running in the ice cream section and the workers turn a blind eye to anything going on. I felt shocked at the lack of management, I can several times recall almost slipping on food thst somebody else had dropped.

There is much more to may sum that ruined any chance of coming back and if the owners are to read my review then please severely fix your store, I feel almost upset after my experience because I paid for haram food which I was told was halal and this happend to 2 of my friends with me aswell. Visited around 2pm Thursday 4th May 2023 Overall very dissapointing. Food was ok but everything else below average. Seated quickly could be the only positive upon being seated noticed the music was very loudly overbearing Asif I was in a nightclub and found myself having to shout to the company I was with to be heard over the music. When asked politely if could be turned down slightly the lady walked off with no reply. I didn’t say anything as I though maybe she did and I could hear it over the very loud music. After that table was very full with dirty finished dishes so I proceeded to stack them on the table next to us which was empty so staff could recognise and determine these are ok to be collected but that same waitress came up to the table shouting that I wasn’t to do that and put dirty dishes on a clean table or I would be asked to leave. Her customer service was below 0 the way she spoke to me and my table made us feel so embarrassed we left thereafter due to the shocking customer service. I honestly was trying to help by this act but her reaction was very unruly and uncalled for if the plates had been cleared and she was doing her job correctly instead of being stood in lengthly conversations with fellow staff members then the problem would of never occurred. I personally would never return to this restaurant. Dissatisfied and disappointed in the customer service and general attentiveness and cleanliness of the restaurant. I would love a reply from the restaurant as to there view on my experience but I highly doubt they check...
