Great food; really generous portions, and one of the most authentic tasting Indian restaurants in Nottingham! However, the service was terrible, and the staff’s attitude was disgusting.
Upon arrival, we weren’t asked if any of us had allergies/dietary requirements, and when told that a member of the party had a nut, egg and raw tomato allergy, the waitress happened to roll her eyes at the inconvenience, immediately walking off to get another colleague without mention! Although another member of staff was helpful and picked out what we can/can’t have with allergies, the food was brought out with a side salad of tomatoes which contaminated the plate, meaning the member of our party felt very uncomfortable as their allergen needs were ignored!
Anyone ever heard of the customer is always right? Booking a table for 12 certainly means sitting at a table for 12, yet upon arrival the table was set for 10. We asked if they could bring an extra table, as we clearly could not fit, and instead of agreeing (and apologising) I was met with, “you did book a table for 10, now I need to go all the way upstairs and carry a heavy table for you to bring downstairs so I will be 5-10 mins, but next time make sure you book the correct amount so you don’t waste our time”. Was annoyed at this “pity me” comment and pulled out my phone to check that I did in fact book a table for 12 (see picture) as I remember putting in my card details to confirm a £120 no-show fee, which adds up to £10 per head.
Lastly, the layout of the bill was slightly confusing; it stated that a 10% discretionary charge will be added to tables of more than six hours, ours of course being 12, yet this wasn’t included on the bill. Regardless of the bad service, some members of the party left a tip included in their total to pay, which deemed to be confusing at the very end when the total was fulfilled before the last 2 members of the party paying at all- therefore some guidance on the tips/inclusion of the 10% discretionary charge would have been appreciated.
Altogether, great decor and lovely food, just the staff may require some lessons on how accommodate to the needs of people with allergies (which is common for a lot of people), and how to make a party feel welcome in their restaurant! Although it didn’t completely ruin our night, it did put a downer on our celebration - what happened to the good old days at tamatanga where it was a completely enjoyable environment, the food was (a lot) cheaper, and the staff were accommodating to any...
Read moreWe as a family decided to visit the Nottingham Restaurant this evening following a visit to the Christmas Market. We also regularly visit Tamatanga’s other locations too.
Upon arrival we were greeted by whom I assume was a member of management.
We asked for a specific seat set up in which to assist us with our child’s seating requirements, to which we were shown to a table that was suitable.
We entered with an XL Mobility Pushchair so it was a good give away that our young child has SEN’s.
However whilst we were settling at our table, removing coats etc….our child was kneeling on the couch seat not making a fuss, which we were already in the process of trying to ask him to sit down properly and explain why too.
The member of staff that had earlier showed us to our table, strolled past and asked if my child could sit on his seat properly and walked off…….
The manner in which we were spoken too was really condescending and in front of other customers and staff too.
However once we’d all sat down, we felt so uncomfortable that we decided to leave due to the either lack of understanding or just plain rudeness expressed in their request.
Whilst we were in the process of putting our Coats back on, having not even taken a look at the menu. A member of staff observed what had happened and asked what had been asked of us.
I explained our child wouldn’t have understood what the (member of management) had barked at him, and us.
The empathetic member of staff asked us to “please stay” but we thought it better we leave as it wouldn’t have been a nice dining experience from then on.
They understood and actually apologised for the way in which we’d been treated. They could see exactly how we’d been made to feel this way.
I’m not super sensitive by any stretch regarding SEND matters but the lack of Interest and customer service coming from this member of management has angered me to the point where I’ve spent time leaving this less than complimentary review.
As we passed two members of management standing by the door as we left neither asked why we weren’t staying?
They can’t need the custom that much, I guess?
It’s a shame as the food...

Tamatanga offers a vibrant and contemporary take on Indian cuisine, blending traditional flavors with modern flair. During our visit, we explored a variety of dishes, each presenting its unique taste profile.
What We Tried:
• Papdi Chaat: This dish featured chickpeas, whole wheat crisps, mint chutney, sweetened yoghurt, blueberries, and tamarind chutney. While the sauces were tangy and refreshing, the potatoes lacked the expected freshness, slightly diminishing the overall experience.
• Amritsari Fish Fry: Described as spiced white fish bites with a Gurkha roasted tomato and garlic chutney, the fish appeared to be frozen and lacked depth in flavor. The accompanying chutney didn’t enhance the dish as anticipated.
• Railway Cabin Lamb (Hot!): A standout dish! The lamb, slow-cooked with garlic, whole red chillies, and curry leaves, was tender and packed with rich, spicy flavors. Paired with the chilli cheese naan, it created a delightful combination that we’d highly recommend.
• Punjabi Butter Chicken: This comfort curry, featuring chicken tikka pieces in a creamy tomato-based sauce, was flavorful and well-executed. The chicken was tender, and the sauce had a balanced richness that made it a dish we’d return for.
The ambiance at Tamatanga is lively and welcoming, with a modern decor that complements the dining experience. While some dishes exceeded expectations, others left room for improvement.
Verdict: Tamatanga presents a diverse menu that caters to various palates. While certain dishes like the Railway Cabin Lamb and Punjabi Butter Chicken shine, others may benefit from refinement. Overall, it’s a worthy spot for those seeking a contemporary Indian...
