We liked the look of The Wig & Pen as it was close to the Theatre. I downloaded the Greene King app to enable us to order and pay from our table. Apart from my own bank blocking my card transactions, it worked very well. It was more convenient especially as the bar filled up quickly due to St Patrick's day. There were 5 of us in my party and we all ordered various meals e.g. sausage and mash x2 bacon burger and chips and 1 pie and chips/mash along with 5 soft drinks for £65*which I thought was very reasonable. Add an extra £6* for 2 desserts. * roughly remembered pricing from the app, but close. The toilets are upstairs for both male and female, disabled toilets are located right of the stairs leading up to the balcony seating area and toilets. The young man that brought us our meals and drinks and desserts was very polite and courteous. If you are coming downstairs after using the toilets, members of the public carry up trays of food or drinks just barge up through the stairs. I tried to give men and women room on the stairs and I hoped that they would be the same to me but unfortunately not. I put it down to the day. I would not let that put me off from returning to the pub.

First things first, it seemed that, at the time, they were understaffed and the food took about an hour and 15 minutes to come, so we were in a hurry when eating, but at least it was really good. The nuggets from the kids menu seemed to be some sort of frozen/store-bought variant, but the fish and chips were fresh and delicious. The sweet potato fries were better than the regular fries in my opinion. The dessert was also really good (the pudding), it did have raisins though, which in my opinion don't work really well with chocolate, but we couldn't really taste them while eating, so it wasn't ruined. I would come again if the waitig times weren't as long, I guess that's why they open up at 11 am, but that's just a guess of mine.

We had to wait over an hour for our food to come, as there was apparently not much staff in the kitchen. We weren’t told, like we should’ve been but we over heard another table. My food arrived before my friends, so I had to wait 5 minutes for the waiter to bring my friends food out so that I could actually get cutlery. My roast chicken was pink in some areas so I didn’t eat it. My stuffing was cold, the veg was either near to raw or looked like it had been sat for days as it was all discoloured and mushy. The Yorkshire pudding was so stale and didn’t even have a taste! Looks can be deceiving, especially when food isn’t cooked to the correct standard. We ordered starters which came out with our mains, but chose not to make a fuss as we had less than an hour until we were due to be in the theatre. The only good thing to come of the meal was my starter. Unfortunately I do not think I’ll be returning as we were both very disappointed by this experience.

This was my 3rd time visiting Oxford and England in general. Each time I had high hopes of enjoying a proper fish and chips at a local pub. Each time I was disappointed- until now. I walked by Wig & Pen and was drawn in by the atmosphere- as it looked cozy and fitting of a pub. The staff was really friendly (Lucy and Gabe). They convinced me to give the fish & chips a go. Gabe suggested the mushy peas so I followed his advice. The fish seemed fresh and light and had a nice crisp to it - even after adding a bit of vinegar and tartar sauce to each bite. Thank you Lucy and Gabe for restoring my faith in local pubs to provide a feeling of “home” and a proper fish and chips!! Highly recommend Wig and Pen!

After seeing all the good reviews I was excited to have dinner here, unfortunately not long after entering the excitement left. No one came to explain how things worked within the bar. Finally figured out we had to use an app to order and pay for our food. Once ordered and a long wait for drinks and starters we finally met out first staff member who seemed like they didn't even want to be there. After an even longer wait for our mains, we still had no napkins and had to rummage through some drawers to find some ourselves. That's when we met our second member of staff who seemed even less interested to be there. Besides the food being quite good, I can't recommend a good experience in the Wig & Pen.

We had a late lunch. My husband had fish and chips and it was great. I had a selection of three mix and share plates. The crispy battered cod was really good. Battered Halloumni was a bit too greasy for me. I least enjoyed houmous and flatbread as it was a bit bland. My husband was so happy with his fish that he didn’t want to share my meal and 3 plates is too much for one woman with an average appetite. We welcomed the opportunity to order at the table using QR code. The place has lovely pictures on the walls and a nice pub ambiance on the whole. Toilets clean and tidy. Really worth visiting if you’re looking for a pub atmosphere.
