Firstly, this restaurant has a fantastic position. No doubting that, but sadly as is often the case, complacency can creep in as filling the tables is assured from those seeking a beautiful backdrop to their meal. The service was really what let this place down. Our order came in two tranches which were 25-30 minutes apart and likely only came then after chasing. There was no apology or explanation. It was attempted to be signed off on the basis that the children were fed first, but one of our children didn’t have her meal either! There seemed to be some staff working hard, whilst others were sitting at tables ‘managing’ which seemed frustrating when ‘doing’ would have been more useful for customers. The menu itself was limited. Fair enough, some places try to do too much badly. However, the children’s food was clearly planned by someone without children. Fish pie with very limited fish, but plenty of capers and carrot.....keep it simple for most kids. Sausage casserole was fine, but lacking substance and a little mash or rice would have gone a long way. The sharing boards were ok. Nothing special, but some thought as to how to present them to fit on your tables would make sense. This all sounds a bit nit picky, but it reflects the disappointment we felt compared to some really special meals out...
Read moreDisappointed! The reviews looked good but the food just didn't hit the mark.
Focaccia bread was ok, but there was no balsamic at all in the oil, just oil.
My wife ordered the scallops which were meant to be marinated in lime juice and chillis but they were mostly sat in oil. The scallops were sliced and there were maybe 3 or 4 of them in total. The dish was expected to be hot but it was served cold. The corn chips didn't really compliment it and were very oily.
The smash burgers were ok but very oily and heavy with American cheese. No side salad or anything other than meat, cheese and the bun.
Chips ordered as a side dish were ok.
Service was ok, a bit slow considering the place isnt huge and they seemed to have enough waiting staff on (I've worked in hospo myself).
10% service charge added to the bill but was removed upon request.
Redeeming features are the location, the atmosphere was generally quite nice, staff were friendly enough albeit not engaging in conversation etc.
I do feel that with a bit more effort into the menu and food preparation, presentation and quality it could be a superb restaurant, such a shame that we came away disappointed (and my wife...
Read moreVery disappointing. The Summer House looked so inviting from the beech, but it quickly let us down. While it gives excellent views the service was dire.
After a brief millennia waiting to be served I went to the bar in search of refreshments, but encountered a lost waitress. Finally armed with menus we ordered and waited another millennia for drinks and food. Just make sure you don't order anything as uncouth as chips! I still have the waitress's shrill cackle echoing in my ears.
Eventually we were given somebody else's booze and having the lost waitress check our order twice. It appears a technical fault with the tablets had happened. Well I don't know what tablets the waitress was taking, but they weren't working!
Our food then arrived, all incorrect as per. While our drinks (also wrong but by now we were desperate) served in schooners as if we were in the Australian outback.
Oh food quality? Poor. And overpriced for what finally arrived.
In the meantime a table next to our group, who arrived only a minute behind us had still not been served and were given the wrong menus! (Evening instead of lunch.)
Not...
