Well, it’s no wonder the Marmion gets such great reviews having sampled their fayre tonight I can only but agree. We booked a table on line and went straight to the table after ordering drinks about 5:30 PM, nice atmosphere and an ideal setting for a restaurant in a busy, social pub. The girl who served us was very helpful and friendly, difficult when you are the only one front of house, we just got there before the evening staff arrived, so no complaints. I Initially thought it funny there were no starters (trust me, you would struggle to get through mains course with their portion sizes), just olives and bread – bit more than that, bread with salsa dip, bowl of olives, bowl of red peppers with soft cheese and balsamic vinegar dip for the warm bread, lovely and filling which is why our eyes were bigger than our tummies. Mrs B had nachos with cheese and chicken with bowls of sour cream, guacamole and salsa plus jalapeno chillies, quite fiery but very nice. I had battered cod with humungous chips, mushy pea bowl and tarte sauce (all sauces chef prepared). What a gorgeous fish, so fresh too in a thin batter and a large piece too, as good or better than any fish & chip shop. We both went for the GF lemon cheesecake, wowsers, this took the experience to a new level, it was beautiful in every way, artistic presentation with a nice strawberry & a couple of raspberries’, little bowl of sorbet to balance what I can only describe as handmade lemon curd taste to die for and a sumptious cheesecake on a light fluffy base of biscuit. At this point, there was no room for an espresso, I /we were done, you know that over-eaten feeling after a blowout Sunday roast, that feeling… To conclude, you better be hungry

There are very few pubs in Portsmouth that serve a good roast so I was pleasantly surprised after my visit to The Marmion. Homemade Yorkshire, roast potatoes and gravy (made the proper way) were all lovely as was the veg - everything tasted very fresh! I think I can say that I preferred it to the other place down the road. Slightly more than I usually pay, but I couldn't really find fault with anything - perhaps include stuffing? Parsnips? Although you won't go hungry as the portions were just right. Great service (am I right in saying that the place has been taken over?)

Great food and service. Cheerful and helpful Let down badly by state of men's loos. Not sure what women's looks like but men's was reminiscent of 1970' British Rail loos which is not a pleasant memory. I asked and at the start of November their plan is to refurbish Loos after Christmas as manager has just changed. You may have lost a number of customers by then!! I certainly will not return until we into new year I attach photos of loo currently.

Came here yesterday, 3 people by entrance moved so we could entre ,we said thank you, one of them laughed saying 'that is ok you won't be served as we are staff', (thinking we were out of ear shot! )They were right, they stood there having there cigarettes and laughing, a member of staff came out of the door behind the bar just looking at us and joined them outside ! When the girl came in and served us she said ,with out prompting 'you must have sneaked past me, I didn't see you there. An out right lie ! Using the toilets they were grubby and you had to have wet hands, because nothing to dry them with ! as it wasn't late in the day we can only assume they had been left from the...

Been before and had a wonderful Roast, couldn't fault it at all. However, we went this evening for dinner and we were really disappointed. The food over all was very average over all but my partner's main was awful, you could visually see how dry it was. The staff asked us how the food was before we had even started then didn't ask again. My partner had two bites of his meal so asked for a refund and the end which they offered a half refund which felt ridiculous when you could see he hasn't even eaten most of the meal . Wouldn't recommend eating there on any day apart from a Sunday. We won't...
