Tried Angelo's for the first time on Sunday evening. I pass by often and it's usually pretty busy - alongside the glowing reviews this seemed a good sign, so me and my partner popped in for the two course offer.
Admittedly, the offer is cheap but what arrived at the table was truly poor food. I started with the italian antipasto, and to be fair the amount of cured meat that arrived was impressive. Unfortunately, this sat upon a large bed of leaves with no dressing of any kind. The meats themselves were mostly alright but the dish lacked finesse.
For main, both me and my partner ordered the pheasant toscana as I had been wanting to try this for a while. Despite never having cooked or eaten pheasant I could tell that the meat was woefully overcooked, my boyfriend confirmed my suspicions and felt much the same. This meant that what should have been a succulent dish was tough and dry.
Alongside the pheasant we were given a selection of boiled vegetables - carrots, broccoli, turnip and peas. Bizarrely, these were very undercooked and tough to eat. Furthermore, there was absolutely nothing in the way of seasoning - just cold, hard veg.
The sauce was the only redeeming factor to the dish - rich and glossy. And yet, it could do little to save this dish.
I cannot fault the service, which was friendly and efficient. And of course, the price is very reasonable. My grievance lies with how busy this restaurant is and the 4.4 on Google, etc. when there are amazing restaurants all over Preston not doing half as well. For better food try Itsys, Plau, Fino, Bar Pintxos, Hell, even the Wetherspoon's is less...
Read moreA large modern two floor restaurant that has a certain wow factor as you enter the glass front doors. Floor to ceiling glass wine store catches your eye immediately. I was very excited to get seated and have a great night of dining with my girlfriend. Service was adequate all be it waited quite a long time between drinks to first course to main course. One waiter had a very loud whistle that started to grate. Having a conversation in this place is hard enough as it's a very noisy place due to size and no noise damping furnishing. The food would be adequate in most cases but for the price was below par. My pate starter with cranberry was nothing special with ratio of pate, bread and butter all wrong. There was more butter than pate and served with white sliced Toasted Warburton bread. I just would of expected better. My Lasagne was again nothing special. Edible but not of any real flavour or consistency that crys a good lasagne in the slightest. All in all I would say this is a modern, clean looking restaurant with OK service but with absolute basic food most people could cook better themselves. This is only based on what I had of course. But when you order a lasagne in an Italian restaurant I would expect better. Probably would never choose to eat...
Read moreI'm glad of the understanding and tolerance of the servers in this establishment. I know full well a restaurant like this is a gamble when takings your 4 month old but I booked in the hope he'd sleep through. It was the wife's birthday and there was no way I would break tradition, we always go away for a few days and eat at some of the best places in the area we are staying.
The reception was amazing and attentive, the menu inspired, the "wet" vast and inclusive and the decor and ambiance authentic. We only had opportunity to enjoy 2 courses and we were beyond happy with both. Antipasti, delicious and the oils and aceto accompanied had real flavour. Crab ravioli had a sauce that matched the sweetness of the meat perfectly, the choice of allium surprising but hit the note. Unfortunately the boy made it his mission to disrupt the other diners so we had to make a quick exit so as not to disturb others, on leaving we received a respectful fair well and descended the hill to the car park with a sense that we had missed out....... In summary, great place, great staff, great food. The only disappointment was having to leave...
