Hi all, I don't usually write reviews but i felt i had to share my experience with this one, so this is going to be lengthy.
Im a hardcore foodie specialising in steak so I don't usually frequent any place in West Brom for that, normally I will go to Gaucho, Cau or occasionally Miller and Carter, so when this opened recently I didn't really give it second thought until I started hearing some very good things about it. Me, my friend Billy and a couple of other lads decided to pay a visit and purposely booked for a table of 4 on a Saturday night, knowing that they will be at their busiest and thats when the staff and kitchen will be tested.
The Smokehouse is not a normal mixed grill and curry place the likes of which there are many in the area, and although they do Indian food its primarily a steak and burger joint, so the menu is western with a good variety of meat, vegetarian, Indian and even vegan dishes, very impressive. I noticed with the menu they haven't tried to do too much, but what what they do they do well, and thats the secret to food joints, if you try your hand at too many things you end up being average at best.
The Piece de Resistance is their American Smoker which is used for the brisket and steaks amongst other things, that is the main reason we decided to check it out as there are not many places which cook in that way.
So, after being seated within 10 minutes the waiter came over and we ordered Argentinian Malbec which goes well with steak, and then our food, no starters just mains, it was a combination of Rump, Ribeye, Sirloin and T-Bone. We were served in about 35 minutes and all food arrived hot and well garnished with very good presentation and all the right cutlery, we were asked if we needed anything else and then we were left to it, service very good so far.
And so to the steaks, and my verdict is this.. if you know your food and especially if you know your steak, then you will love what they are doing at the Smokehouse. Cooking steak is an art form and very difficult to get right, consistency can be tricky because of cut sizes and thickness but on this night we couldn't fault anything. We ordered 2 medium rare's, a rare and a well done, they were all cooked just right and we could tell which was which from the colour of the meat. Portions were generous without being to big (restaurants should always leave their guests wanting more rather than give them too much where they leave some food on their plates). Half way through the meal the waiter came over and asked if everything was OK, he made a bit of polite conversation and didn't hover around too much, this is a good balance of attentive service without being overpowering and not many places get it right.
Once we had finished we didn't order dessert but asked for the bill (which my friend Billy insisted on paying) and during the time from when we finished to the time left we were never once urged to vacate the table, again this is how it should be.
To conclude, our experience was excellent, the steaks were extremely well cooked, tender and smoky in taste with just the right accompaniments. Like I said, if you know your food you WILL love this place, if you don't like it then you probably don't know your food.
Before leaving Billy left a good tip for the waiter, and although I noticed the actual owner helped serve us we did suggest that the service staff get the tip and not him. All in all a very good night.
Try this place, highly...
Read moreBeen a while since the last review, but the mixys have been happening. Visited the smokehouse about 6 weeks ago
The Indian smokehouse on reform street in West Brom. One of those old pubs that’s been converted to a desi grill. They’ve done a good job with the decor. Menu looked good so we popped down.
Firstly the parking. It’s down the side of the smokehouse. Quite a few spaces if you can find one with all the lambos and Porsches on the carpark! Couple of the locals were stood in the doorway play fighting as we tried to get in which was annoying. We were given a booth at the back and the barmaid said we could open a tab which is great as normally it’s pay per round - more on that later. Restaurant seemed quite busy which is always a good sign. We went for the usual large mixed grill and boneless grill. Pakoras and chilli chicken, madras sauce, 3 naan breads - keema, chilli and garlic cheese, a chilli chips and finally a masala chips.
The main mixy was sizzling as standard, the prawns were the best bit really crispy batter. Lots of meat on the mixy not just filling it up with tikka.
Boneless grill, very similar to the main one, minus the wings and lamb. A good 7/10 for the mixys.
The sides, no lollipop in this place so we settled for some chilli chicken, had a bit of a kick which was good. Big portion sizes as you can see.
Naan breads - pretty OK keema stood out the others were pretty thin and not very tasty.
When we went to settle up the bill for the drinks, we had spotted that there was 3 shots of whisky and some extra pints added on, it was rectified immediately but was a pain.
Overall 6/10. A good mixy nothing outstanding that would make us go back. There’s so much competition in that space now you really need to have something out of this world to keep returning ie champys/ soho group and the...
Read moreWORST RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD. Went here for my husbands birthday with some friends, firstly we were squeezed up a corner which would have left no option but to put the high chair behind us while we ate. We asked to move and to be fair they moved us straight away... we then ordered starters and mains. After an hour the starters where brought out some missing food, waitress placing it on the table saying 'I don't know what this is' and some starters not arriving until half hour later... complained a few times to be met with any excuse they could think of at the time or simply just saying... 'we know it's bad' after another half hour the missing parts of the starters still hadn't come and with no sign of the mains either we decided to leave. I asked the waitress for the cake I had dropped off to surprise my husband and advised we would not be paying for the few starters that had been brought the attitude of the staff was just to apologise, agree it was bad and even be told that they would have left a lot sooner if they were us! The other waitress then brought my cake out on it's side, I said have you seriously just brought my cake out on it's side!? To which she just smiled...the other waitress obviously a little more embarrassed asked if the cake was ok which LUCKILY it was, to which the other waitress told me 'see it's ok' Litrally felt like I could have been on you've been framed at that point! NEVER EVER AGAIN! Now 9 o'clock and a 2yr old that hadn't eaten we ended up going to a nandos just over the road... Thank God they...
